A virtual transition to home program solution
Parents can read or watch videos about understanding their baby’s diagnosis, their baby’s care team, prescribed medications, and setting up medical equipment. Moreover, the app includes resources for the programs and services available.
Baby Steps LA was created by Ashwini Lakshmanan, MD, MS, MPH.
Dr. Lakshmanan created Baby Steps LA to address gaps in healthcare delivery in perinatal-neonatal medicine. Her research revolves around the impact of maternal stress on birth outcomes and quality of life for caregivers of preterm infants after discharge from neonatal intensive care.
Neonatal morbidities affect roughly 15% of newborn infants, necessitating care in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). These infants require special care even after they are discharged from the hospital, which is sometimes provided by transition-to-home programs.
The aim of this research and the creation of the Baby Steps LA App is to provide parents with care coordination, which is one of the core challenges parents face.
