Introduction 

The Benchtop 4-Vial COD Reactor is used for the digestion of COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) samples. The reactor allows four vials to be inserted at a time. It maintains a temperature between 20 – 180°C and accuracy of ±3°C (at 25°C). It also includes a plastic shield and a digital screen that displays the reactor’s temperature and other commands. 

The Benchtop’s 4-Vial COD Reactor is used in the first stage of COD Analysis or the COD Test. The COD test is used to measure the amount of oxygen needed to oxidize the amount of organic matter in water. Therefore, it indirectly measures the number of pollutants or organics in a water sample. The test consists of the Digestion stage, which is performed using the COD reactor, and the Determination phase, which is performed using colorimetric or titrimetric methods. The Benchtop 4- Vial COD Reactor is used to provide high heat to the sample, which can be set between 0 – 120 minutes, using an in-built timer, which allows the reaction between an acid and catalyst in the sample to take place. 

The Benchtop’s 4-Vial COD Reactor’s ability to detect pollutants in water allows it to be used to determine the quality of water and measure pollutants in surface water, drinking water, wastewater, and aqueous hazardous wastes. 

Principle of COD

Apparatus Features 

The Benchtop’s 4-Vial COD Reactor measures 110×170×135 mm. It can hold up to four vials and includes a plastic shield to cover the vials. It maintains a temperature range between 20 – 180°C and accuracy of ±3°C (at 25°C). It can operate at a temperature between 0~40 ℃ and a humidity of <=85%. It has a heating timer than can be set between 0 -120 minutes. The reactor only takes 10 – 15 minutes to heat up, depending on the temperature selected. It requires a power supply of DC 12V/10A to operate. The reactor has a digital display screen that displays the temperature, duration of heating, and power.

Protocol 

  • Place your sample in COD Vials.
  • Turn on the COD reactor and set it to the desired temperature.
  • After the reactor reaches the desired temperature, place the vials in the reactor and set the timer to the desired number of hours. 
  • Remove the vials from the reactor after the time is up and allow them to cool for further analysis.

Applications 

The Benchtop COD Reactor can measure whether water is contaminated by a wide range of pollutants, which can have serious health and biodiversity outcomes if left untreated. The reactor can monitor the quality of water in the following:

  • Drinking water – the reactor can be used to monitor if the drinking water supply is contaminated with harmful additives such as pesticides, effluents, and garbage. It can also indicate whether naturally decomposed substances such as greases, proteins, and carbohydrates are present in the water. 

 

  • Water in streams and tributaries – the COD reactor can measure whether high organic compounds contaminate streams and tributaries, which can affect the population of fish, plants, and wildlife, and decrease dissolved oxygen and eutrophication.
  • Wastewater treatment plants – the COD reactor can measure if wastewater samples have high COD, indicating higher levels of oxidizable materials. This reveals reduced dissolved oxygen levels, negatively affecting higher aquatic lifeforms. 

Strengths and Limitations 

The Benchtop 4 –VIAL COD Reactor can heat up to 4 samples at a time. It is used to digest COD samples rapidly. After pressing the start button and setting the temperature and the time duration, the reactor quickly heats up and automatically turns off when the time is up. It includes a temperature range setting of 20 – 180°C, allowing samples to be heated at various temperatures according to experimental needs. It has high precision and accuracy of ±3°C (at 25°C). The reactor is compact, takes up less bench space, and can easily be moved around the laboratory.
