The traditional eight radial arm maze has many variants that allow mice, rats, and even primates to display their spatial working memory for the arms that they have visited by avoiding re-entry.
Typically, they do so by relying on their memory for the spatial location of visited arms relative to extra maze landmarks in the testing environment. Extramaze and intramaze cues are key to this process.
Open Field test is a popular protocol used to assess exploratory behavior and anxiety. Thigmotaxis in the open field is used to evaluate anxiolytic, anxiogenic and even non-pharmacological treatments. Ambulation is the most common behavior studied with this maze, but others such as latency or rearing can also be measured. In addition, objects can be added for a modification similar to the novel object recognition field.
Walls can be both opaque or clear. We recommend that clear walls are used for measurements of anxiety, while opaque walls are used if assessments include novel object recognition.
The Real-Time Place Preference Chamber is a variant of the conditioned place preference chamber which is a paradigm widely used to explore the reinforcing effects of natural and pharmacological stimuli, including drugs of addiction.
Mice were tested in a two-chamber cage without additional contextual cues. Mice were gently put into the middle of the cage at the beginning of the test. Mice will receive laser stimulation when entering one side of the chamber randomly assigned at the beginning of the experiment.
