Introduction

The portable colorimeter is an instrument used in colorimetry that measures the absorbance of particular light wavelengths by a specific solution. It consists of a small handheld device equipped with a 10ml glass bottle, allowing quick and convenient measurements of absorbance rates in the range of 0-3 Abs. It also supports several parameter detections, including wavelengths of 420nm, 470nm, and 620nm. Moreover, it includes 10MB of storage space to save test results.

The portable colorimeter applies the Beer-Lambert law, which states that a solution’s concentration is proportionate to its absorbance to ascertain the concentration of a known solute in a given solution. It measures how much light can pass through a sample of pure solvent and compares it with how much it can pass through a solution. The colorimeter’s photocells detect the amount of light passing through the sample solution. The amount of light that strikes the photocell after passing through the colored solution determines the current it produces. Less light passing through the solution results in less current produced by the photocell. The more colorant there is in the solution, the more light will be absorbed. A colorimeter measures a sample’s color using three wideband readings along the visible spectrum. It has three filters, which simulate human vision.

Principle

The principle of the colorimeter applies Beer-Lambert’s law in which the concentration of a color solution and the distance light travels through it determine how much light is absorbed by the solution.

Apparatus Features

The portable colorimeter is a handheld device equipped with a 10ml glass bottle. It supports several parameter detections, including wavelengths of 420nm, 470nm, 520nm, and 620nm. The absorbance measuring range is 0-3 Abs, absorbance resolution is 0.001Abs, and operating repeatable is ≤±0.01Abs. The device-rated capacity is 0.3W

The portable colorimeter has 10MB storage space, which can save 5000 test results. However, Conduct Science also offers optional memory that can be expanded to 1GB. The test results are saved manually to save storage space, and the device can be connected to an Android data line.

The colorimeter has 5 keys, an acrylic protection panel, and a waterproof interface. It includes a USB power supply. The device has a long service life in which its LED operating life is 100000 hours, and optical filter life is 5 years.

Parts of the Colorimeter

Light source – The light produces enough energy across 420 – 620 nm wavelengths.

Slit It allows a beam of light to the path and reduces unwanted light.

Sample holder (cuvette) – It is used to hold the working solution.

Photodetector –  It measures the transmitted light. Once the light beam passes through the sample, it is received by the detector of the colorimeter, which then transforms it into an electrical signal.

Monochromator –  It converts polychromatic radiation (white light) from a light source into monochromatic radiation (one wavelength band).

DisplayIt displays the visible output of the electrical signals from the detector.

Applications

Colorimeters are used to compare a new sample solution with an existing one. They are usually used in applications requiring fast results with less analytic depth since they do not provide full-range spectral data.

The portable colorimeter can be used in clinical laboratories and hospitals to measure different biochemical components in a range of biological samples, such as blood, plasma, serum, CSF, urine, and other body fluids. The portable colorimeter can also be used to monitor bacteria and yeast growth in liquid cultures. Moreover, it can quantitatively estimate analytes in methods involving the formation of a colored product with a specific analyte. It can quantitatively analyze glucose, proteins, and other biochemical compounds.

Other applications of the portable colorimeter include assessing the color of beverages, measuring ink colors used in scanners and printers, and testing water quality. The portable colorimeter can also be used in the textile and food industry and in manufacturing paints.

Literature Review

Analysis of river water using the portable colorimeter

Suzuki et al. (2004) utilized the portable colorimeter to analyze river water for nitrite and iron. On-site determination of nitrogen as nitrite was performed, in which the samples were analyzed by measuring the absorbance of the sample at 525 nm. Moreover, on-site determination of iron was performed with on-site extraction, and the sample’s absorbance was measured at 525 nm against the methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) reagent. The results were compared with a conventional double-beam spectrophotometer and a flame atomic absorption spectrometer. The results revealed that the colorimeter was successfully used for the on-site determination of nitrite and iron in river water with results comparable to that of the conventional double-beam spectrophotometer and the flame atomic absorption spectrometer.

Estimation of fluoride in drinking water using a portable colorimeter

Kanwar and Rao (2010) utilized a portable colorimeter to estimate fluoride concentration (cF) from groundwater samples taken from different parts of Karnataka, India. The colorimeter was used in conjunction with SPADNS (sodium 2-(parasulfophenylazo)-1,8-dihydroxy-3,6- naphthalene disulfonate) method. Each water sample underwent three analyses, and three R0(cF) meter readings and the proper calibration curve were used to estimate the mean value of cF. The results were compared to a double-beam spectrophotometer, and the cF values obtained using both methods were fairly good. The estimated value of cF for the original sample was 2 × (3.9 ± 0.4) mg/L = 7.8 ± 0.8 mg/L.

Strengths

The portable colorimeter is compact and can be used to find absorbance rates of solutions on the go. It is equipped with a 10ml glass bottle, which allows measurements to be done quickly and conveniently. The device’s 10MB storage space saves all measurements made, and the storage space can also be upgraded upon request.
