When to use

  • Weekly inventory checks to plan feed orders
  • When scaling up production and adjusting feed budgets
  • After fish sampling to recalculate daily usage with updated weights
  • Before holidays or periods when suppliers may be closed

Do not use for

  • As a replacement for on-site inventory tracking — verify actual stock periodically
  • For precise nutrition planning — consult a fish nutritionist for feed formulation

Feed rate changes with temperature

Fish eat less in cold water. Adjust the feed rate percentage seasonally to avoid overestimating usage.

Account for waste

Not all feed dispensed is consumed. Factor in 5–10% waste when planning, especially in pond systems.

Multiple species or ponds

Run the calculator separately for each species or pond with different stocking densities.

1

Method

Daily feed consumption calculated as: (Fish Count x Avg Weight x Feed Rate%) / 100,000 kg. Days remaining = Feed on Hand / Daily Usage. Reorder warning triggers at 7 days or less.

Feed Inventory Management in Aquaculture

Running out of feed is one of the most preventable causes of production loss in aquaculture. Consistent feeding is critical for maintaining growth rates and FCR. Feed inventory planning requires knowing your current stock, daily consumption rate, and supplier lead times. This tool calculates how many days your current supply will last and warns you when inventory is critically low.
