Farm & Contact Information

When to use

  • Creating or updating a farm emergency action plan
  • Training new staff on emergency procedures
  • Meeting insurance or certification requirements for documented emergency protocols
  • Preparing for seasonal weather risks (hurricane, flood, freeze)

Do not use for

  • As a substitute for site-specific risk assessment by a qualified consultant
  • For laboratory or aquarium-scale operations — protocols are designed for farm-scale production

Test the generator monthly

A backup generator that has not been tested is not a backup. Run it under load for at least 15 minutes every month and log the test.

Keep emergency contacts current

Outdated phone numbers in an emergency plan are worse than no plan. Verify contacts quarterly.

Practice makes permanent

Conduct tabletop exercises or live drills at least twice per year. Staff who have practiced the plan will execute it faster under real pressure.

Emergency Preparedness in Aquaculture

The National Aquaculture Association and FAO both recommend that every aquaculture operation maintain a written emergency action plan (EAP). An effective EAP covers the four most common emergency categories: power failure, water quality crisis, disease outbreak, and natural disaster. Each section should include step-by-step instructions that can be followed by any staff member without supervision.
