Social interaction scoring table

Enter event durations from resident-intruder or freely interacting dyads. Social investigation is the sum of nose-to-nose, anogenital sniffing, and allogrooming time divided by session duration.

Group social investigation

Group aggression rate

When to use

  • Compute social-investigation percent from direct interaction scoring
  • Compare resident-intruder aggression rates across groups
  • Summarize genotype or treatment cohorts with mean plus SEM
  • Export animal-level event totals for Prism, R, or Python
  • Pair direct-contact assays with three-chamber sociability data

Do not use for

  • Three-chamber chamber-time or social novelty preference indices
  • Tube dominance scoring
  • Automated pose-estimation workflows that already export complete ethograms

Separate assay modes before analysis

Resident-intruder and dyadic designs have different motivational structure. Analyze them as distinct paradigms.

Duration matters

A 5-minute and 10-minute session can produce similar bout counts with different rates. Keep duration fixed or use rate-normalized metrics.

Score aggression with explicit rules

Define whether chasing, boxing, biting, and mounting count as aggression before the first video is scored.

Resources

  • Resident-intruder or dyadic mode selected before scoring
  • Session duration fixed within each cohort
  • Partner novelty and sex pairing documented
  • Nose-to-nose, anogenital, and allogroom definitions written down
  • Aggression criteria defined for resident-intruder sessions
  • Scorer blinded to group when possible

Method

Social investigation percent is calculated as (nose-to-nose time + anogenital sniffing time + allogrooming time) / session duration x 100. Resident-intruder aggression rate is aggression bouts / session minutes. Group summaries use animal-level means and SEM.

This tool performs descriptive calculations on user-entered behavioral scores. It does not replace protocol-specific exclusion rules, aggression welfare endpoints, or statistical analysis.

Direct Social Interaction Assays

Direct social interaction assays measure how much time a test animal spends investigating another animal. Resident-intruder designs emphasize territorial and aggressive behavior. Dyadic designs emphasize reciprocal interaction in a neutral or familiar arena.

Metrics and Math

The analyzer sums nose-to-nose, anogenital sniffing, and allogrooming durations for each animal or dyad. That total is divided by session duration to report social-investigation percent. In resident-intruder mode, aggression bouts are divided by session minutes.

Design Notes

Keep lighting, arena, partner novelty, resident isolation period, and scoring definitions constant across groups. Blind manual scorers to genotype or treatment when feasible. Pair with video scoring when behaviors are brief or overlapping.
