A [hand culverine](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Culverin) is a XV century artillery piece made of a short smoothbore tube, usually of iron, held in place by on a wooden piece with brass bands. Portable culverins weighted around 40 kg (88 lb) in weight, and were mounted on a swivel to adjust for elevation and direction or fixed on walls in defensive stance. The term "culverin" is derived from the Latin *colubrinus*, or "snake-like", in reference of the erratic path of the projectiles.
