2017 SERDP Smoldering Combustion Project Field Data and Emissions Results

<p>2017 field data and emissions&nbsp;results from the SERDP funded study &quot;Ignition, Propagation, and Emissions of Smoldering Combustion: Experimental Analysis and Physics-Based Modeling&quot;.&nbsp;Two field experiments were performed near Winthrop, Washington. The first set of plots (Winthrop #1)&nbsp;were established in duff near large trees prior to prescribed fires.&nbsp;Thermocouples were installed at specific depths to measure&nbsp;heating and&nbsp;rate of spread. At these plots&nbsp;emissions samples were collected at time interval as smoldering combustion progressed. At the second site (Winthrop#2) &nbsp;single points were&nbsp;ignited in duff and as smoldering advanced in a circular pattern emissions sample were collected at time intervals. The&nbsp;emissions samples were analyzed for carbon species&nbsp;by gas chromatography , and emission factors and rate of carbon release was developed from the results.&nbsp;</p>
