Phylogenetic bracketing (Witmer, 1995) indicates the presence of proximal intermetatarsal ligaments in taxa between Torvosaurus and Tyrannosauridae. This condition is interpreted as preceding the evolution of distal ligaments in the arctometatarsus. Outgroup comparison indicates broader distribution of proximal metatarsus ligaments in the Dinosauria (see text).
