Old town, congregational mosque and market, from the palace (Qasr&nbsp;al-Hukm) looking north west, before 1950. <a href="https://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%83%D9%8A_%D8%A8%D9%86_%D8%B9%D8%A8%D8%AF_%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%84%D9%87_%D8%A2%D9%84_%D8%B3%D8%B9%D9%88%D8%AF">Turki bin Abdullah bin Muhammad al-Sa&#39;ud</a> ordered the establishment of the mosque in an area known as al-Naq&#39;ah (النقعة) when he designated&nbsp;Riyāḍ the capital in 1824; he appointed <a href="https://ar.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%B9%D8%A8%D8%AF_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B1%D8%AD%D9%85%D9%86_%D8%A8%D9%86_%D8%AD%D8%B3%D9%86_%D8%A2%D9%84_%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B4%D9%8A%D8%AE">ʻAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Ḥasan Āl al-Shaykh</a> as the chief scholar in charge of re-establishing Islamic studies as per the first Saudi emirate. The <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8028299">elevated walkway</a> was added in 1843-44 CE.</p>
