Lynally Medieval Graveslab (OF016-031005-)

Probable 16th century graveslab, the base of which has a seven-armed floriated cross representing the tree of life from which the shaft of the cross rises. Three horizontal lines of varying length form a three-bar cross immediately above the floriated base known as a Papal Cross or Eastern Orthodox cross. The top of the shaft is decorated with intersecting switch-line tracery window with 10 sub-arches all of which is carved in relief. The letters E K incised either side of the cross-shaft appear to be later. The graveslab originally marked the grave of a high ranking ecclesiastical figure. According to local tradition the graveslab marks the final resting place of the founder, St Colmán Eala. A monastery was founded here by Colmán Eala who died in 611 AD. The slab now lies flat on the surface of Lynally graveyard (OF016-031002-) to the south-west of the medieval ruins of Lynally Church (OF016-031001-).
