Coweeta Synoptic Data from 49 sampling sites in the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin from 2009 to 2010 (diameter of LWD data)

This data was generated as part of synoptic sampling conducted at the Coweeta LTER between June 2009 and May 2010. 49 wadeable streams with low levels of development were sampled throughout the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin in the Southern Appalachians. Effects of riparian vegetative conditions on a suite of channel morphological variables were investigated: active channel width, variability of width within a reach, large wood frequency, mesoscale habitat distributions, median particle size, and percent fines. Diameter of large woody debris (LWD) in each stream reach were tallied in this specific dataset. At each site, a uniform 150 meter section of stream was surveyed. All wood in a reach exceeding 10cm diameter and 1.0m length were tallied. Observers kept a tally of the function, if any, of the large woody debris within the channel (e.g. pool formation, jam formation, bank protection, etc.). Does land-use history facilitate non-native plant invasion? A field experiment with Celastrus orbiculatus in the Bent Creek Experimental Forest in the southern Appalachians from 2008 to 2009

Although historic land use is often implicated in non-native plant invasion of forests, little is known about how land-use legacies might actually facilitate invasion. The researchers conducted a 2-year field seeding experiment in western North Carolina, USA, to compare germination and first-year seedling survival of Celastrus orbiculatus Thunb. in stands that had been cultivated and abandoned a century earlier and were dominated by tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L.), and in paired stands that had never been cultivated and were dominated by oaks (Quercus spp.). Experiments were conducted at five sites with paired tulip poplar and oak stands by varying litter mass (none, low, or high) and litter type (tulip poplar or oak).

Stream chemistry and stream temperature measurements (1998 - 2009) in Little Santeetlah Creek, Joyce Kilmer Wilderness Area, Graham County, North Carolina

This project began as a Coweeta LTER Schoolyard project in 1998. Students walked Joyce Kilmer Memorial Loop Trail to discuss forest ecology, air quality issues, and take grab samples. Later, students walked the Wolf Laurel - Naked Ground Trail and took an additional 14 grab samples along an elevational gradient in Little Santeetlah Creek. The project was continued by Brian Kloeppel and technicians on a quarterly basis to monitor water quality in a Class I Wilderness Area over a long time period. The last collection was made in February 2009.

Fall 2009 grasshopper monitoring -- mid-marsh grasshopper abundance and species diversity at eight GCE LTER sampling sites

Grasshopper abundance and species diversity were investigated at eight sampling sites within the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study area in August 2009. Visual surveys were conducted along 8 2m by 10m transects randomly allocated within the mid-marsh zone at each site. All grasshoppers observed within each transect were counted and identified to species, if possible. This survey was conducted as part of the GCE invertebrate monitoring program, and will be performed annually to assess long-term changes in relative species abundances across the GCE study area.

June - December 2009 RTK survey of salt marsh plant ground elevations to assess the accuracy of a LIDAR-derived digital elevation model.

Real time kinematic (RTK) GPS survey of ground elevations for six plant species (Spartina alterniflora, Juncus roemerianus, Batis maritima, Distichlis spicata, Salicornia virginica and Borrichia frutescens) and two non-vegetated cover classes (salt pan and intertidal mud) was carried out from June to December 2009 to assess the accuracy of a LIDAR-derived digital elevation model. In total, 1389 ground control points (GCP) were collected for the Duplin River (Sapelo Island) and Blackbeard Creek (Blackbeard Island) salt marshes.

Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE): Litterfall mass 2009-2022

This dataset describes litterfall mass collected in the Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) study in New Hampshire from fall 2009 through summer 2022. Litter was collected three times per year: fall (late October or early November), spring (June), and summer (August). Fall litter was sorted by species in a subset of stands. This data package also includes the R code used to impute missing data for analysis, a manually edited data file used in the R code flow, and a file matching the labels for litterfall collectors from the original (pre Fall 2011) and current (Fall 2011 and onwards) labeling systems. All collectors have the most current label if known for all years of data.
