Data from: Modeling the perception of audiovisual distance: Bayesian causal inference and other models

Studies of audiovisual perception of distance are rare. Here, visual and auditory cue interactions in distance are tested against several multisensory models, including a modified causal inference model. In this causal inference model predictions of estimate distributions are included. In our study, the audiovisual perception of distance was overall better explained by Bayesian causal inference than by other traditional models, such as sensory dominance and mandatory integration, and no interaction. Causal inference resolved with probability matching yielded the best fit to the data. Finally, we propose that sensory weights can also be estimated from causal inference. The analysis of the sensory weights allows us to obtain windows within which there is an interaction between the audiovisual stimuli. We find that the visual stimulus always contributes by more than 80% to the perception of visual distance. The visual stimulus also contributes by more than 50% to the perception of auditory distance, but only within a mobile window of interaction, which ranges from 1 to 4 m.

Present Events and Event Categories for Connecting Similar Past and Present Causalities

<p>This dataset includes present events described as news articles&nbsp;and their categories to connect similar past and present causalities.&nbsp;</p> <p>There are 2 files: 13category_crawled_news.csv and&nbsp;13category_mainichi_news_events.csv.&nbsp;Both the files include an ID for a present event and its categories per line. The former one uses IDs defined in&nbsp;CD-Mainichi Newspapers 2012 data whereas the latter one uses URLs.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>In these files, 0 represents that its category is not assigned to the event. In contrast, 1 is used to represent that the category is assigned to the event.&nbsp;For example, if a cell (<em>k</em>, <em>l</em>) is 0, the <em>k</em>th event is not related to the <em>l</em>th category.</p>

Data from: A new method of Bayesian causal inference in non-stationary environments

Bayesian inference is the process of narrowing down the hypotheses (causes) to the one that best explains the observational data (effects). To accurately estimate a cause, a considerable amount of data is required to be observed for as long as possible. However, the object of inference is not always constant. In this case, a method such as exponential moving average (EMA) with a discounting rate is used to improve the ability to respond to a sudden change; it is also necessary to increase the discounting rate. That is, a trade-off is established in which the followability is improved by increasing the discounting rate, but the accuracy is reduced. Here, we propose an extended Bayesian inference (EBI), wherein human-like causal inference is incorporated. We show that both the learning and forgetting effects are introduced into Bayesian inference by incorporating the causal inference. We evaluate the estimation performance of the EBI through the learning task of a dynamically changing Gaussian mixture model. In the evaluation, the EBI performance is compared with those of the EMA and a sequential discounting expectation-maximization algorithm. The EBI was shown to modify the trade-off observed in the EMA.

Exploring causal components of plasticity in grey seal birthdates: effects of intrinsic traits, demography, and climate

<p>Change in breeding phenology is often a response to environmental forcing, but less is known of the mechanism underlying such changes and their fitness consequences. Here we report on changes in the breeding phenology from a 27-year longitudinal study (1991-2017) of individually marked, known-aged grey seals (Halichoerus grypus) on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.</p> <p>We used Generalized Linear Mixed Models to test hypotheses about the influence of fixed factors (maternal age, parity, previous reproductive success, pup sex, colony density, AMO, NAO, and SST) and a random factor (female identity) on parturition dates. We also examined the consequences of the shift in birthdates on maternal energy investment in offspring as measured by pup weaning mass. Birthdates were known for 2768 pups of 660 known-age females. For 494 females with ≥ 2 parturition dates, repeatability as measured by the intraclass correlation was high (mean=0.66). 87% of the variation in birthdates was explained by a mixed effects model that included intrinsic and extrinsic fixed effects. Most of the explained variation was associated with the random effect of female identity.</p> <p>Parity was the most important intrinsic fixed effect, with inexperienced mothers giving birth later in the season than multiparous females. Over almost 3 decades, mean birthdates advanced by 15 days. The mixed model with intrinsic effects and population size, the detrended AMO from the previous year and mean NAO in the previous 3 years explained 80 % of the variation with 21 % of variation from the fixed effects. Both primiparous and multiparous individuals responded to the climate forcing, and there was strong evidence for heterogeneity in the response. The shift in birthdates did not impact pup weaning mass. Females exhibited considerable phenotypic plasticity indicating that climate driven changes in breeding phenology may not always have measurable consequences.</p>
