Variation in North American bumble bee nest success and colony sizes under captive rearing conditions
<p>Of the 265 known bumble bee (<em>Bombus</em>) species, knowledge of colony lifecycle is derived from relatively few species. As interest in <em>Bombus</em> commercialization and conservation grows, it is becoming increasingly important to understand colony growth dynamics across a variety of species since variation exists in nest success, colony growth, and reproductive output. In this study, we documented successful nest initiation and establishment rates of colonies produced from wild-caught gynes, and created a timeline of colony development for fifteen western North American <em>Bombus </em>species captively reared from 2009 to 2019. Additionally, we assessed variation in colony size among five western North American <em>Bombus </em>species from 2015 to 2018. Nest initiation and establishment rates varied greatly among species, ranging from 5–76.1% and 0–71.8%, respectively. <em>Bombus griseocollis </em>had the highest rates of nest success across the eleven-year period, followed by <em>B. occidentalis, B. vosnesenskii, </em>and <em>B. huntii. </em>Further, we identified that colonies reared from two gynes had significantly higher nest initiation and establishment rates per nest box compared to those reared from a single gyne. Colony size also differed significantly among species with <em>B. huntii </em>and <em>B. vosnesenskii </em>producing more worker/drone cells than <em>B. griseocollis, B. occidentalis, </em>and <em>B. vancouverensis. </em>Additionally, gyne production differed significantly among species with <em>B. huntii </em>colonies producing more gynes than <em>B. vosnesenskii. </em>Results from this study increase knowledge of systematic nesting biology for numerous western North American <em>Bombus </em>species under captive rearing conditions, which can further improve rearing techniques available to conservationists and researchers.</p>
Radial topographies of biofilm colonies
<p>During the biofilm life cycle, bacteria attach to a surface and then reproduce, forming crowded, growing communities. Difficulties in accurately measuring biofilm height across relevant time and length scales have prevented testing diverse biophysical models empirically. Using white light interferometry, we measure the heights of microbial colonies with nanometer precision from inoculation to their final equilibrium height, producing a novel and detailed empirical characterization of vertical growth dynamics. This dataset corresponds to the profiles of developing biofilms, measured through white-light interferometry. This dataset represents novel high-resolution characterizations of developing biofilms in the vertical direction, empirical measurements that can be utilized to test models for biofilm development, ranging from bulk-dynamics to surface fluctuations. </p>

Insights into Varroa mite (Varroa destructor) infestation levels in local honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies of Ethiopia
<p>These data were collected from three geographic regions of Ethiopia from September, 2020 to June 2022 in order to determine the prevalence of<em> varroa destructor </em>in Ethiopian honeybee colonies. The data was analyzed to compare the <em>Varroa destructor</em> mite among the honeybee development stages (brood Vs Adult), by the hive types (Local traditional Vs Frame modern) and across the geographic regions (Oromia, Amhara and SNNPR). </p> <p>Both the raw and the partially processed data were available here. </p>
A new molecular phylogeny of salps (Tunicata: Thalicea: Salpida) and the evolutionary history of their colonial architecture
<p>Salps are marine pelagic urochordates with a complex life cycle including a solitary and colonial stage composed of asexually-budded individuals. These colonies develop into species-specific architectures with distinct zooid orientations, including transversal, oblique, linear, helical, and bipinnate chains; as well as whorls, and clusters. The evolutionary history of salp colony architecture has remained obscured due to the lack of a homology-based ontology to characterize architectures, as well as a lack of phylogenetic taxon sampling and resolution of critical nodes. We (1) collected and first-time sequenced eight species of salps, (2) inferred the phylogenetic relationships among salps, and (3) reconstructed the evolutionary history of salp colony architecture. We collected salp specimens via offshore SCUBA diving, dissected tissue samples, extracted their DNA, amplified their 18S gene, and sequenced them using Sanger technology. We inferred a new molecular phylogeny using both Maximum Likelihood and Bayesian approaches. Using this phylogeny, we reconstructed the ancestral states of colony architecture using a Bayesian ordered Markov model informed by the presence and absence of specific developmental mechanisms that lead to each architecture. We find that the ancestral salp architecture is either oblique or linear, with every other state being derived. Moreover, linear chains have evolved independently at least three times. While transversal chains are developmentally basal and hypothesized to be ancestral, our phylogenetic topology and reconstructions strongly indicate that they are evolutionarily derived through the loss of zooid torsion. These traits are likely critical to multijet locomotory performance and evolving under natural selection. Our work showcases the need to study the broader diversity of salp species in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of their organismal biology, evolutionary history, and ecological roles in pelagic ecosystems.</p>
