The 7.5-minute digital elevation model (DEM) data are digital representations of cartographic information in a raster form. The DEMs consist of an array of elevations for ground positions at regularly spaced intervals. The data are produced in 7.5- by 7.5-minute blocks from either digitized cartographic map contour overlays of a scanned National Aerial Photography Program (NAPP) photographs. The DEM data are stored as profiles with a 10- or 30-meter square grid spacing along and between each profile. The original USGS DEM data (Mt. Kineo and Woodstock quadrangles) were merged and projected into UTM Zone 19. The resultant grid was clipped to a box surrounding the USDA Forest Service, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Data distributed as GeoTIFF format in Coordinate system EPSG:26919 - NAD83 / UTM zone 19N.

Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest Valleywide Plots: GIS Shapefile

This coverage was developed as part of Paul Schwarz's dissertation research. Fifteen North-South transects were established at 500m intervals to span the entire Hubbard Brook Valley. Between 1995 and 1997, 371 plots were positioned at 100m and 200m intervals along each transect. In 1998, 60 additional plots were positioned: three plots were placed at 25m intervals between two existing plots at 20 locations that were stratified according to elevation and aspect and selected at random. Hence, a system of 431 permanent 500 square meter circular plots were established. No plots were located in the six experimental watersheds designated for ecosystem research. The sampling layout of the plots was chosen to facilitate the analysis of spatial patterns in the forest vegetation by utilizing a wide range of distance intervals between plots. These intervals ranged from approximately 25m to several thousand meters. Data distributed as shapefile in Coordinate system EPSG:26919 - NAD83 / UTM zone 19N.

Hubbard Brook National Land Cover Dataset 1992

The National Land Cover Dataset was compiled from Landsat satellite TM imagery (circa 1992) with a spatial resolution of 30 meters and supplemented by various ancillary data (where available). The analysis and interpretation of the satellite imagery was conducted using very large, sometimes multi-state image mosaics (i.e. up to 18 Landsat scenes). Using a relatively small number of aerial photographs for 'ground truth', the thematic interpretations were necessarily conducted from a spatially-broad perspective. Furthermore, the accuracy assessments (see below) correspond to 'federal regions' which are groupings of contiguous states. Thus, the reliability of the data is greatest at the state or multi-State level. The statistical accuracy of the data is known only for the region. Important Caution Advisory With this in mind, users are cautioned to carefully scrutinize the data to see if they are of sufficient reliability before attempting to use the dataset for larger-scale or local analyses. This evaluation must be made remembering that the NLCD represents conditions in the early 1990s. The New Hampshire portion of the NLCD was created as part of land cover mapping activities for Federal Region I that includes the States of Connecticut, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. The NLCD classification contains 21 different land cover categories with a spatial resolution of 30 meters. The NLCD was produced as a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) to produce a consistent, land cover data layer for the conterminous U.S. using early 1990s Landsat thematic mapper (TM) data purchased by the Multi-resolution Land Characterization (MRLC) Consortium. Total Soil Respiration Data at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1998-2002

Total soil respiration – or the emission of CO2 from soil – was measured monthly for five years (1998-2002) at several sites in the reference forest. These data allow the estimation of C flux from soil to atmosphere. These estimates are described in detail in Fahey et al. (2005). Monitoring was discontinued with the intention of repeating the measurements if and when major changes in biota and environment on the plots occurred. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). Sulfate isotopes in precipitation and streamwater, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1966 - 1994

Sulfur deposition in the northeastern U.S. has been decreasing since the 1970s and there has been a concomitant decrease in the SO4 lost from drainage waters from forest catchments of this region. It has been established previously that the SO4 lost from drainage waters exceeds SO4 inputs in bulk precipitation, but the cause for this imbalance has not been resolved. The use of stable S isotopes and the availability of archived bulk precipitation and stream water samples at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) in New Hampshire provided a unique opportunity to evaluate potential sources and sinks of S by analyzing the long-term patterns (1966–1994) of the d34S values of SO4. In bulk precipitation adjacent to the Ecosystem Laboratory and near Watershed 6 the d34S values were greater (mean: 4.5 and 4.2l, respectively) and showed more variation (variance: 0.49 and 0.30) than stream samples from Watersheds 5 (W5) and 6 (W6) (mean: 3.2 and 3.7; variance: 0.09 and 0.08, respectively). These results are consistent with other studies in forest catchments that have combined results for mass balances with stable S isotopes. These results indicate that for those sites, including the HBEF, where atmospheric inputs are 10 kg S ha-1 yr-1, most of the deposited SO4 cycles through the biomass before it is released to stream water. Results from W5, which had a whole-tree harvest in 1983–1984 showed that adsorption/desorption processes play an important role in regulating net SO4 retention for this watershed-ecosystem. Although the isotopic results suggest the importance of S mineralization, conclusive evidence that there is net mineralization has not yet been shown. However, S mass balances and the isotopic result are consistent with the mineralization of organic S being a major contributor to the SO4 in stream waters at the HBEF. Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest: Tree component masses sampled west of watershed 6 by Whittaker et al in 1965

In the summer of 1965, Whittaker et al. sampled 93 trees west of watershed 6 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest. Allometric equations modeling the biomass of various components in relation to diameter and height were published in 1974 in Ecological Monographs, and form the basis for most subsequent biomass estimates at Hubbard Brook and in many other northeastern locations. Forest Inventory of a Calcium Amended Northern Hardwood Forest: Watershed 1, 2006, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest

In order to evaluate the role of Ca supply in regulating the structure and function of base-poor forest and aquatic ecosystems, the Ca content of soil was increased through the application of wollastonite (CaSiO3) in October 1999. Forest inventory surveys were initiated in 1996 and repeated at 5 year intervals. This data set includes 2006 inventory measurements.The data consists of a total inventory of all trees >=10 cm diameter-at-breast-height (dbh) on the whole of the watershed (11.8 ha), as measured in each of the 200 25 m x 25 m plots. Trees >=2 to <=10 cm dbh were subsampled using a 3 meter wide strip along one edge of each 25 m x 25 m plot. With the addition of tree tags in 2006 on all trees >=10 cm dbh, tracking of individual trees is now possible. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES).
