King scallop (<i>Pecten maximus</i>) growth monitoring - SAMS IMTA Lab
<p> A small number of hand-dived King scallops (Pecten maximus) was deployed at SAMS IMTA lab and monitored for its growth and performance in suspended cultivation, alongside existing seaweed cultivation.</p> <p>The dataset contains repeated measures of 8 individual scallops (A1-4, B1-4) for growth in shell length and -height over time (Jan 2023 - ongoing).</p>
King Rail and Common Moorhen egg pattern matching data
<p>This dataset is a combination of egg images and processed output on pattern matching of eggshell surfaces from the images using NaturePatternMatch (NPM), additional data extracted from NPM, and field data. The data are separated into four folders based on species and analyses performed. There are two folders of scaled single egg images, one for King Rails, Rallus elegans, and one for Common Moorhens, Gallinula chloropus chloropus. Each photograph is identified by year, clutch and egg identity. Most of the Common Moorhen eggs are numbered in the order of their laying sequence, and they are further identified by laying hen. The NMDS folder includes NPM matching output and clutch identities needed to perform NMDS and PERMANOVA analyses. It includes consolidated and organized output from NPM for each species as well as files with clutch names needed to create merged datasets for graphing. These data were used to perform non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and permutational analysis of variance (PERMANOVA). The Linear Discriminant Analyses folder includes field data (egg length, width, and identity), pattern data extracted from NPM, as well as the estimated proportion of pigment measured within a scaled oval on binary images of eggs. This was used as a proxy for the relative amount of pigmentation on each egg. These data were used to conduct linear discriminant analyses for each species.</p>

King Colobus and Western Red Colobus of Taï National Park - microsatellite dataset
<p><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> <p>We compared the genetic patterns - genetic diversity, population structure, and demographic history - of two African colobine species - King Colobus (<em>Colobus polykomos</em>) and Western Red Colobus (<em>Piliocolobus badius</em>) - in Taï National Park (TNP), Ivory Coast, and Cantanhez Forests National Park (CFNP), Guinea-Bissau, using a dataset of microsatellite loci. While TNP is the largest and best preserved forest of West Africa, CFNP is highly fragmented. Thus, these two forests provide the opportunity of studying the impact of forest status on the maintenance of these species' evolutionary potential.</p> <p>CFNP colobines showed very low genetic diversity, while the populations in TNP still maintain high levels of genetic diversity. A strong signal of population decline was and we found no clear signal of population decrease in Western red colobus and a limited decrease in King colobus. These results suggest larger and historically more stable populations in TNP compared to CFNP. We cannot exclude the possibility that the demographic effects resulting from the recent increase of bushmeat hunting are not yet detectable in TNP using genetic data. Nevertheless, the fact that the TNP colobus populations are highly genetically diverse and maintain large effective population sizes suggests that well-preserved forests are crucial for the maintenance of populations, species and probably for the evolutionary potential in colobines.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong></p> <p>Blood-derived DNA samples of eight King Colobus (<em>Colobus polykomos</em>) and 20 Western Red Colobus (<em>Piliocolobus badius</em>) were genotyped for eleven and ten, respectively, human-derived nuclear microsatellite loci. Loci were amplified by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), following the protocol optimised by Minhós <em>et al.</em> (2013). PCR products were analysed using an ABI 3130XL Automatic Sequencer at the Genomics Unit of Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência, Portugal. Alleles were scored using GeneMapper® Software version 4.1 (Applied Biosystems). Each locus was genotyped up to three times per sample and two independent observers scored the genotypes. Genotypes were considered as heterozygous after each allele was observed in at least two independent PCR reactions. This dataset presents the consensus genotypes obtained for each individual at each locus. No GPS data are available for this dataset, although all individuals are known to come from Taï National Park, Ivory Coast.</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Usage notes:</strong></p> <p>The dataset corresponds to two CSV files - one for King Colobus (<em>Colobus polykomos</em>) and another for Western Red Colobus (<em>Piliocolobus badius</em>). The header shows microsatellite names (2 columns per microsatellite, as these are diploid individuals) and each subsequent row corresponds to an individual. The first column exhibits the codes of the individuals. Missing data is coded as 0.</p>

Gravestone of William Marshall 'the Gypsy King'
William Marshall's gravestone is in St Cuthbert's Graveyard and marks the grave of the 120 year old 'Gypsy King' who died in 1792. Coins left on top of the gravestone may be part of gypsy custom which has endured at the grave over the years. The King´s Hall
The King's hall is the most lavish of all the rooms at Skokloster Castle. It is situated in the middle of the Wrangel apartments, between the rooms of the count and those of the countess. In the Wrangel era the room was called "The Everyday Diningroom". In the 18th Century, when portraits of kings and queens started filling up the walls, it became known as "The King's Hall". The Parade Armour of King Erik XIV of Sweden
This magnificent armour made [King Erik XIV](https://bit.ly/2XHLbZ0) of Sweden look imposingly triumphant. In true renaissance spirit, the motifs on the armour were borrowed from ancient myths, the characteristics of which lent themselves perfectly to the Swedish history and national symbols of that time. The armour was probably made in [Arboga](https://bit.ly/2FQKrGy), Sweden, around 1562, from where it was sent to Antwerp in Belgium to be decorated by the goldsmith Elisaeus Libaerts. The opaque gilt ornamentation has been [repousséd](https://bit.ly/2xuxmy0) from the back and chased from the front. Perhaps the armour was worn by King Erik XIV on 2 October 1564 when, following a military campaign in [Blekinge](https://bit.ly/2KUVNNQ) in the South of Swedan, he returned to Stockholm with his military entourage. Whilst winding its way through the streets of Stockholm, the procession was showcasing chained prisoners of war from Denmark, a motif that can also be found on the armour.
