This data set is the Fall 2011 report of infaunal and epifaunal mollusk species size distributions at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Infaunal and epifaunal molluscs were hand-collected from within quadrats of known area from mid-marsh and creekbank zones (n = 4 quadrats per zone) at all sites. The molluscs were returned to the lab, preserved in ethanol, measured and counted (count data is reported separately). Length of each measurable individual was determined using calipers or an ocular micrometer mounted in a stereomicroscope. Species abundance and density data for these collections may be found in the GCE-LTER data set INV-GCEM-1208a1. Numbers of individuals of each species in the abundance data file may not correspond exactly to the numbers of individuals in the size data file because some individuals may not have been measureable.

Summer 2007 crab population survey based on crab hole counts in fifty-four GCE LTER Hammock sites and four GCE LTER study sites

Crab abundance was investigated at fifty-four hammock sampling sites and four Georgia Coastal Ecosystems (GCE) LTER study sites in June-July 2007 by counting crab holes as a proxy measurement. Each hammock site had six permanent study plots which were previously laid out. Crab holes were counted within a random location inside those six plots at each hammock. Crab holes were counted within a 625 cm^2 area and species were not differentiated in the count, but noted. This method estimates total crab abundance in each study site.

Population Study of Geukensia demissa and Ilyanassa obsoleta at the Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER site in April 2008

During the dates of April 21-April 23, 2008, we conducted surveys to determine the relative abundance of ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa) and mud snails (Ilyanassa obsoleta) across Spartina height zones. Surveys were performed at each of the GCE long term sites (GCE1-GCE10) and were comprised of transect and quadrat sampling methods. Quadrats measured 25 cm^2 for mud snails and 1 m^2 for ribbed mussels. Ribbed mussel surveys consisted of both transect and quadrat methods. For ribbed mussels, a total of 10 quadrats were randomly placed in tall-, mid-, and short-form Spartina and number of visible mussels counted. Transects for ribbed mussels measured 50 m x 2 m and were performed in intermediate- and short-form Spartina zones. In each transect, we counted observed number of mussel clumps per transect. For mud snails, a total of 10 quadrats were randomly placed in tall- and intermediate-form Spartina and on mud banks (2 m from Spartina edge along the creek bank) and total number of individuals per quadrat were counted.

Hubbard Brook Wildlife Monitoring Project: Assessing wildlife population presence, activity and habitat use through continual camera trap monitoring, 2018

Monitoring of wildlife at Hubbard Brook is essential to understand how these species are responding to forest and environmental condition over time, while also placing those wildlife species in the context of ecosystem structural and functional attributes. The presence and persistence of wildlife species common to an area can indicate suitable habitat conditions as well as refugia for less common species. Changes in species presence and activity, such as fewer to no sightings, may point to shifting conditions not suitable to the species missing from the area. Camera trap monitoring allows for continuous, non-obtrusive observation of many different species of wildlife and can be used as part of our understanding of current suitability of habitat condition. To better understand integrated forest condition, we established a camera trap network located at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in the White Mountains of central New Hampshire. The cameras have logged over 1,500 wildlife observations, confirming the presence of many species, including those not previously reported (pine marten and river otter). A total of 15 mammal species have been detected and have also been effective at detecting some bird species, including the Northern Harrier. Natural history observations have provided insight into the lives of the species detected, including reproduction (Bull moose following cow during rut, moose calves, deer fawns), predation (red fox with snow-shoe hare) and presence of parasites (winter ticks on moose with hairless shoulders). These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station.

Insect Population Dynamics on the Main Cropping System Experiment at the Kellogg Biological Station, Hickory Corners, MI (1989 to 2019)

Dataset Abstract Plant dwelling insect occurrence in the LTER main site (all treatments) of the KBS-LTER has been recorded since 1989 and in the successional and forest sites since 1993. The effort has focused on characterizing the temporal and spatial abundance and diversity of a set of insects representative of a higher order insect trophic level, the herbivore predators. The insect database contains more than 400,000 records and consists of counts of adult insects of fourteen species of Coccinellidae, one species of Chrysopidae, and one species of Lampyridae from 30 sample sites in each of the seven treatments in the LTER Main Site. The standard method used to measure these organisms is a yellow sticky trap. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Long-Term Coral Population and Community Dynamics: Annual Island Wide Coral Demography Survey 2011 ongoing

Demographic performance (recruitment, growth, and survival) are quantified annually for multiple individual colonies of the three most common genera (Acropora, Pocillopora, Porites) at both backreef and forereef sites. Each coral was tagged in 2011 and subsequently sampled again in 2012 to track colony growth and mortality dynamics. However, since 2013, investigators have transitioned to identifying coral through detailed mapping methodology and will continue to identify corals using this method in the subsequent years. The mapping system developed in 2013 provides data appropriate for detailed demographic study of coral on varying spatial scales around the island. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2022). Heavy metals in mammal tissue over the last 100 years and their proximity to populated places in Minnesota

This dataset makes use of the University of Minnesota's Bell Museum of Natural History collection examining specimens of four mammal species (a mouse, shrew, bat and squirrel) to ask how tissue metal content has changed over a 94-year time period (1911-2005), and implications for measures of individual performance (body size and cranial capacity). The metal content of organisms is often elevated closer to cities, so these specimens were examined for spatial variation in metal exposure based on their proximity to human populations and the size of those populated areas at the time of collection. Analysis of mammal tissues focused on six heavy metals associated with human activity (Pb, Cd, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Mn), to address whether these anthropogenic metal pollutants vary in concert with human activity.
