Biogeochemical rate data and sediment properties of samples used for a controlled flow through experiment testing the effect of nitrate on organic matter decomposition, PIE LTER, Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts.
In this dataset, we used a controlled flow-through reactor (FTR) experiment to test the role of nitrate as an electron acceptor, and its effect on organic matter decomposition and the associated microbial community in salt marsh sediments. Organic matter decomposition significantly increased in response to nitrate, even at sediment depths typically considered resistant to decomposition. The use of isotope tracers suggests this pattern was largely driven by stimulated denitrification. Nitrate addition also significantly altered the microbial community and decreased alpha diversity, selecting for taxa belonging to groups known to reduce nitrate and oxidize more complex forms of organic matter. Fourier Transform-Infrared Spectroscopy further supported these results, suggesting that nitrate facilitated decomposition of complex organic matter compounds into more bioavailable forms. Taken together, these results suggest the existence of organic matter pools that only become accessible with nitrate and would otherwise remain stabilized in the sediment. The existence of such pools could have important implications for carbon storage, since greater decomposition rates as N loading increases may result in less overall burial of organic-rich sediment. Given the extent of nitrogen loading along our coastlines, it is imperative that we better understand the resilience of salt marsh systems to nutrient enrichment, especially if we hope to rely on salt marshes, and other blue carbon systems, for long-term carbon storage.

Dataset for sound source localization with 101 Blinky sound-to-light conversion sensors
<p>Blinkies are sound-to-light conversion devices that can be used to monitor the sound level over large areas. The data from the sensors is harvested using a video camera. This dataset contains seven videos that were recorded in the gymnastical hall of Tokyo Metropolitan University, Hino Campus on July 3rd 2018. In the video, 101 Blinkies are spread on the ground of the gymnastic hall. A bluetooth speaker mounted on a remote controlled car runs between the Blinkies, causing them to change intensity. The file `pyramic_json` is a JSON format file containing all the meta-data necessary such as sensor locations, room dimensions, and segmentation information.</p> <p>This dataset was used to demonstrate sound source localization in the paper "Blinkies: Open source sound-to-light conversion sensors for large-scale acoustic sensing and applications" by Robin Scheibler and Nobutaka Ono (to appear).</p>

PsPM-SSNA_1-2: Sudomotor Nerve Activity and Skin Conductance Response to 1: Aversive Sounds and 2: Auditory Oddballs
<p>This dataset includes skin conductance response (SCR) and sudomotor neurography signals for each of 7 healthy unmedicated participants 4 male, 3 female,23.7+/-4.0 years) in response to 20 broadband white noise sounds (SSNA_1) or 10 oddball tones in a oddball task (SSNA_2). Some participants did not complete SSNA_2 or had several repetitions of SSNA_1 such that there are 9 recordings for SSNA_1 and 5 recordings for SSNA_2. White noise sounds in SSNA_1 were 1 s long with 10 ms on- and offset ramp and presented at ~85 dB. Oddball and standard sounds in SSNA_2 were 50 ms long, with 10 ms on- and offset ramp, and presented at ~75 dB. Sound frequency was 440 Hz or 460 Hz. White noise sounds and oddball tones was separated by a random inter trial interval of at least 30 s. All stimuli for each of the experiments were presented in one block. There is a marker for each sound onset (including standard tones) in the spike recordings. Participants where instructed to press a button when hearing any sound (SSNA_1) or an oddball (SSNA_2). These keystrokes where not recorded.</p>
