Epistatic interactions between sex chromosomes and autosomes can affect the stability of sex determination systems

<p>Sex determination (SD) is an essential and ancient developmental process, but the genetic systems that regulate this process are surprisingly variable. Why SD mechanisms vary so much is a longstanding question in evolutionary biology. SD genes are generally located on sex chromosomes which also carry genes that interact epistatically with autosomes to affect fitness. How this affects the evolutionary stability of SD mechanisms is still unknown. Here, we explore how epistatic interactions between a sexually antagonistic (SA) non-SD gene, located on either an ancestral or novel sex chromosome, and an autosomal gene affect the conditions under which an evolutionary transition to a new SD system occurs. We find that when the SD gene is linked to an ancestral sex chromosomal gene which engages in epistatic interactions, epistasis enhances the stability of the sex chromosomes so that they are retained under conditions where transitions would otherwise occur. This occurs both when weaker fitness effects are associated with the ancestral sex chromosome pair or stronger fitness effects associated with a newly-evolved SD gene. However, the probability that novel SD genes spread is unaffected if they arise near genes involved in epistasis. This discrepancy occurs because on autosomes, SA allele frequencies are typically lower than on sex chromosomes. In our model, increased frequencies of these alleles contribute to a higher frequency of epistasis which may therefore more readily occur on sex chromosomes. Because sex chromosome-autosome interactions are abundant and can take several forms, they may play a large role in maintaining sex chromosomes.</p>

Can predators stabilize host-parasite interactions? Changes in aquatic predator identity alters amphibian responses and parasite abundance across life stages

<p><span><span>The role of parasites can change depending on the food web community. Predators, for instance, can amplify or dilute parasite </span><span>effects on their hosts. Likewise, exposure to parasites or predators at one life stage can have long-term consequences on individual performance and survival, which can influence population and disease dynamics. To understand how predators affect amphibian parasite infections across life stages, we manipulated exposure of northern leopard frog (<em>Rana pipiens</em>) tadpoles to three predators (crayfish [<em>Orconectes rusticus</em>], bluegill [<em>Lepomis macrochirus</em>], or mosquitofish [<em>Gambusia affinis</em>]) and to trematode parasites (<em>Echinostoma</em> spp.) in mesocosms and followed juveniles in outdoor terrestrial enclosures through overwintering. Parasites and predators both had strong impacts on metamorphosis with bluegill and parasites individually reducing metamorph survival. However, when fish were present, the negative effects of parasites on survival were not apparent, likely because fish altered community composition via increased algal food resources. Bluegill also reduced snail abundance, which could explain the reduced abundance of parasites in surviving metamorphs. Bluegill and parasite exposure increased mass at metamorphosis, which increased metamorph jumping, swimming, and feeding performance, suggesting larger frogs would experience better terrestrial survival. Effects on size at metamorphosis persisted in the terrestrial environment but did not influence overwintering survival. Based on our results, we constructed stage-structured population models to evaluate the lethal and sublethal effects of bluegill and parasites on population dynamics. Our models suggested that the positive effects of bluegill and parasites on body size may have greater effects on population growth than the direct effects of mortality.</span> <span>This study illustrates how predators can alter the outcome of parasitic infections and highlights the need for long-term experiments that investigate how changes in host-parasite systems alter population dynamics. We show some predators reduce parasite effects and have indirect positive effects on surviving individuals potentially increasing host population persistence. </span></span></p>

When wax wanes: competitors for beeswax stabilize rather than jeopardize the honeyguide-human mutualism

<p><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>Many mutualisms are exploited by third-party species, which benefit without </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>providing anything in return. Exploitation can either destabilize or </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>promote mutualisms, via mechanisms that are highly dependent on the </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>ecological context. Here we study a remarkable bird–human mutualism, in </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>which wax-eating greater honeyguides (<em>Indicator indicator</em>) guide humans </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>(<em>Homo sapiens</em>) to wild bees' nests, in an exchange of knowledge about the </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>location of nests for access to the wax combs inside. We test whether </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>the depletion of wax by mammalian and avian exploiter species either threatens </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>or stabilizes the mutualism. Using camera traps, we monitored feeding </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>visits to wax comb made available following honey harvests. We found that </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>greater honeyguides face competition for wax from conspecifics and nine </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>exploiter species, five of which were not previously known to consume </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>wax. Our results support the hypothesis that heterospecific exploiters stabilize </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>the mutualism, because wax depletion by these competitors likely limits </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>feeding opportunities for conspecific exploiters, favouring the early-arriving </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>individual that guided humans to the bees' nest. These findings highlight </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>the importance of the ecological context of species interactions and provide </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>further evidence for how mutualisms can persist because of, and not in spite </span></span><span class="MsoLineNumber"><span>of, exploitation by third-party species.</span></span></p>

Data: More than 1000 genotypes are required to derive robust relationships between yield, yield stability and physiological parameters: a computational study on wheat crop

<p>APSIM-Wheat&nbsp;<strong>(</strong><a href="">www.apsim.info</a><strong>)</strong>&nbsp;was used to simulate a data set (for details, see&nbsp;Casadebaig<em> et al.</em>, 2016) with 9100 virtual genotypes (<em>N</em><sub>gen</sub>= 9100) grown under 9000 environments (<em>N</em><sub>env</sub>=9000). In short, virtual genotypes were created by varying the value of 90 independent physiological parameters in a range of &plusmn;20% from the reference cultivar <em>Hartog</em>.&nbsp;Environments in the dataset contain historical climate data of 125 years (1889-2013) in four locations (Emerald, Narrabri, Yanco and Merredin) in Australia, in combination with two CO<sub><sup>2</sup></sub> levels (380 and 555 ppm), three nitrogen levels (low: 50%, control: 100% and high fertilization: 100% plus 50 kg‧ha<sup>-1</sup>) and three sowing dates (early, control and late).</p>

Confirmation of the suitability and stability of the imatinib mesylate drug product formulation for intravenous administration in the INVENT-COVID clinical trial

<p>Abstract:</p> <p>An isotonic sterile aqueous solution of imatinib mesylate was formulated and then manufactured according to cGMP by KABS Laboratories. A solution pH of 5.0 is optimum for imatinib mesylate solubility and stability and this is maintained by a sodium acetate buffer.&nbsp; The drug product for the clinical study was presented as a sterile solution in a Type 1 clear glass vial with chlorobutyl stopper and seal.&nbsp; Stability studies on the drug product have confirmed an excellent stability profile and these data are presented in Table 1.&nbsp; The drug product specification detailed in this table is consistent with Regulatory Authority requirements for this stage in clinical development.&nbsp; These data support the conclusion that the drug product used in the INVENT-COVID trial was fully compliant with all cGMP and EU Regulatory Authority requirements.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Long-term coastal macrobenthic Community Trajectory Analysis reveals habitat-dependent stability patterns

<p>Long-term monitoring programs are fundamental to detecting changes in ecosystem health and understanding ecological processes. In the current context of increasing anthropogenic threats on marine ecosystems, understanding the dynamics and response of communities becomes essential. We used data collected over 14 years in the REBENT benthic coastal invertebrates monitoring program, at a regional scale in the North-East Atlantic, covering a total of 26 sites and 979 taxa. Four distinct habitats were studied: two biogenic habitats associated with foundation species in the intertidal and subtidal zones and two bare sedimentary habitats in the same respective tidal zones. We used Community Trajectory Analysis, a statistical approach that allows for quantitative measures and comparisons of temporal trajectories of ecosystems. We compared observed community trajectories to trajectories simulated under a non-directional null model in order to better understand the dynamics of the communities, their potential drivers, and the role of the studied habitats in these dynamics. Despite strong differences in the community compositions between sites and habitats, the communities followed non-directional dynamics during the 14 years monitored, which suggested stability at the regional scale. However, the shape, size, and direction of the trajectories of benthic communities were more similar within than among habitats, also suggesting the influence of the nature of the habitat on community dynamics. Results showed a higher variability in community composition in the first years of the monitoring in the intertidal bare habitat and confirmed the role of biogenic habitats in maintaining temporal stability. They also highlighted the need to apprehend the role of transient and rare species and the scale of observation in temporal beta diversity analyses. Finally, our study confirmed the usefulness of Community Trajectory Analysis to link observed trajectory patterns to fundamental ecological processes.</p>

<pre>We analyse the stability of the next-to-tribimaximal mixings ($NTBM$) under radiative corrections with the variation of SUSY breaking scale ($m_s$) for both normal and inverted hierarchical cases at the fixed value of seesaw scale $M_R = 10^{15}$ GeV and $\tan \beta = 30$. All the neutrino oscillation parameters receive varying radiative corrections irrespective of the $m_s$ values at the electroweak scale, which are all within $3\sigma$ range of the latest global fit data. NH case is found to be more stable than IH case for all four cases.</pre>

Multi-decadal stability of fish productivity despite increasing coral reef degradation

<p>1.     Under current trajectories, it is unlikely that the coral reefs of the future will resemble those of the past. As multiple stressors, such as climate change and coastal development, continue to impact coral reefs, understanding the changes in ecosystem functioning is imperative to protect key ecosystem services.</p> <p>2.     We used a 26-year dataset of benthic reef fishes (including cryptobenthic fishes) to identify multi-decadal trends in fish biomass production on a degraded coral reef. We converted fish abundances into estimates of community productivity to track the long-term trend of fish biomass production through time.</p> <p>3.     Following the first mass coral bleaching event in 1998, the abundance, standing biomass, and productivity of fish communities remained remarkably constant through time, despite the occurrence of multiple stressors, including extreme sedimentation, cyclones, and mass coral bleaching events. Species richness declined following the 1998 bleaching event, but rebounded to pre-bleaching levels and also remained relatively stable.</p> <p>4.     Although the species composition of the communities changed over time, these new community configurations still maintain a steady level of fish biomass production. While these highly dynamic and increasingly degraded systems can still provide some critical ecosystem functions, it is unclear whether these patterns will remain stable over future decades.</p>

General relativistic precession and the long-term stability of the solar system: SimulationArchive dataset

<p>We share the data for 1280 long-term solar system simulations used in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1093/mnras/stad719">Brown &amp; Rein (2023)</a>. The simulations are zipped together consecutively in groups of 16 and saved in the <code>REBOUND</code>&nbsp;(3.18.1)&nbsp;SimulationArchive format. Please see the companion paper and <a href="https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.7753656">code</a> for details.</p> <p><strong>Abstract</strong></p> <p>The long-term evolution of the solar system is chaotic.&nbsp;In some cases, chaotic diffusion caused by an overlap of secular resonances can increase the eccentricity of planets when they enter into a linear secular resonance, driving the system to instability.&nbsp;Previous work has shown that including general relativistic contributions to the planets&#39; precession frequency is crucial when modelling the solar system.&nbsp;It reduces the probability that the solar system destabilizes within 5 Gyr by a factor of 60.&nbsp;We run 1280 additional <em>N</em>-body simulations of the solar system spanning 12.5 Gyr where we allow the general relativistic&nbsp;precession rate to vary with time.&nbsp;We develop a simple, unified, Fokker-Planck advection-diffusion model that can reproduce the instability time of Mercury with, without, and with time-varying general relativistic&nbsp;precession.&nbsp;We show that while ignoring general relativistic&nbsp;precession does move Mercury&#39;s precession frequency closer to a resonance with Jupiter, this alone does not explain the increased instability rate.&nbsp;It is necessary that there is also a significant increase in the rate of diffusion.&nbsp;We find that the system responds smoothly to a change in the precession frequency: There is no critical general relativistic&nbsp;precession frequency below which the solar system becomes significantly more unstable.&nbsp;Our results show that the long-term evolution of the solar system is well described with an advection-diffusion model.&nbsp;</p>

Increasing stability of a native freshwater fish assemblage following flow rehabilitation

<p>Stream restorations are increasingly critical for managing and recovering freshwater biodiversity in human-dominated landscapes. However, few studies have quantified&nbsp;&nbsp;how rehabilitative actions promulgate through aquatic communities over decades.&nbsp;</p> <p>Here, a long-term dataset is analyzed for fish assemblage change, incorporating data pre- and post-restoration periods, and testing the extent to which native assemblage stability increased over time. In the late 1950s, a large capacity dam was installed on Putah Creek (Solano County, CA, USA) which altered the natural flow regime, channel structure, geomorphic processes, and overall ecological function. Notably, downstream flows were reduced (especially during summer months) resulting in an aquatic assemblage dominated by warmwater nonnative species, while endemic native species subsisted at low levels as subordinates. A court-mediated Accord was ratified in 2000 providing a more natural flow regime, specifically for native and anadromous fishes in the stream. Richness of nonnative species decreased at every site following the Accord, while richness of native species increased or stayed constant. At the three most upstream sites, native species richness increased over time and ultimately exceeded nonnative richness. Native assemblage recovery was strongest upriver, closer to flow releases and habitat restoration activities, and decreased longitudinally downstream. Rank-abundance curves through time revealed that while species evenness was low throughout the study, dominance shifted from nonnative to native species in the upstream sites coincident with rehabilitation efforts. Mean rank shifts decreased following flow rehabilitation; thus the assemblage became increasingly stable over time following flow rehabilitation. Putah Creek&rsquo;s rehabilitation may represent a model for others interested in improving endemic freshwater communities in degraded ecosystems.</p>
