Data for: Large-scale long-term passive-acoustic monitoring reveals spatiotemporal activity patterns of boreal bats

<p class="MsoNormal"><span>The distribution ranges and spatio-temporal patterns in the occurrence and activity of boreal bats are yet largely unknown due to their cryptic lifestyle and lack of suitable and efficient study methods. We approached the issue by establishing a permanent passive-acoustic sampling setup spanning the area of Finland to gain an understanding on how latitude affects bat species composition and activity patterns in northern Europe. The recorded bat calls were semi-automatically identified for three target taxa; <em>Myotis</em> spp., <em>Eptesicus nilssonii</em> or <em>Pipistrellus nathusii</em> and the seasonal activity patterns were modeled for each taxa across the seven sampling years (2015–2021). We found an increase in activity since 2015 for <em>E. nilssonii</em> and <em>Myotis </em>spp. For <em>E. nilssonii</em> and <em>Myotis</em> spp. we found significant latitude -dependent seasonal activity patterns, where seasonal variation in patterns appeared stronger in the north. Over the years, activity of <em>P. nathusii</em> increased during activity peak in June and late season but decreased in mid season. We found the passive-acoustic monitoring </span><span>network to be an effective and cost-efficient method for gathering b</span><span>at activity data to analyze spatio-temporal patterns. Long-term data on the composition and dynamics of bat communities facilitates better estimates of abundances and population trend directions for conservation purposes and predicting the effects of cli</span><span>mate change.</span></p>

Data from: Global change in brain state during spontaneous and forced walk in Drosophila is composed of combined activity patterns of different neuron classes

<p><span>Movement-correlated brain activity has been found across species and brain regions. Here, we used fast whole-brain lightfield imaging in adult <em>Drosophila </em>to investigate the relationship between walk and brain-wide neuronal activity. We observed a global change in activity that tightly correlated with spontaneous bouts of walk. While imaging specific sets of excitatory, inhibitory, and neuromodulatory neurons highlighted their joint contribution, spatial heterogeneity in walk- and turning-induced activity allowed parsing unique responses from subregions and sometimes individual candidate neurons. For example, previously uncharacterized serotonergic neurons were inhibited during walk. While activity onset in some areas preceded walk onset exclusively in spontaneously walking animals, spontaneous and forced walk elicited similar activity in most brain regions. These data suggest a major contribution of walk and walk-related sensory or proprioceptive information to global activity of all major neuronal classes.</span></p>

Data of "Pen mates' interactions, potential precursors of damaging behaviours, object manipulation, straw rooting, and primary activity: A detailed data set in undocked pigs under dietary protein restriction"

<p>Damaging behaviours, such as tail biting, are common problems in pig production, compromising animal welfare and causing economic losses. Detailed studies are impeded by the difficulty of directly observing these behaviours. Tail biting is a broader phenomenon that begins long before lesions manifest, and behavioural problems caused by various stressors present themselves weeks before they escalate to damaging behaviour, resulting in serious injuries. Therefore, detailed data on behaviours, which can be considered precursors of tail biting, such as oral and nasal manipulation of conspecifics, should be collected. The present data were collected in the course of a large study on the genetic potential of protein efficiency, in which the crude protein content in the diet was reduced to 80% of the recommendations. Dietary protein reduction is a promising way to reduce nitrogen emissions in pig manure, but its implications for animal welfare are not yet clear. Pigs differ phenotypically and genetically in their ability to utilise dietary proteins; therefore, there might be individual differences in how they cope with the protein reduction. Here, we present detailed data of focal observations of 95 pigs at an experimental farm with undocked tails that were fed a protein-reduced diet. Pigs were observed directly in their home pens for 5 min each on four different days. All actions directed towards objects in the pen, interactions with and confrontations among pen mates, and straw rooting behaviour and general activity were recorded. After the behavioural observations, wounds on different parts of the body and the cleanliness of the pigs were noted. The protein efficiency of 94 pigs was obtained. The data set comprises six tables. The first table contains information on the animals, including the identities of their parents, farrowing group, sex, and protein efficiency. The other data tables contain four 5-min observations of each pig on 10 object-manipulation behaviours; 150 interaction behaviours, including reactions; 14 confrontation behaviours and their outcomes and reactions; 10 mounting behaviours, including reactions; two rooting behaviours; seven basic behaviours; and an index of general activity. The observations took place under comparatively good housing conditions. Pigs were not tail-docked and were given fresh straw daily, <em>ad libitum</em> access to feed, floor space above the legal requirements (only a partially slatted floor), and daily cleaning of pens, and they were closely monitored for signs of damaging behaviour; all of these are favourable conditions as they limit stress and the risk of damaging behaviour. These data can be used to further explore the relationships of specific behaviours and phenomena and their association with protein efficiency. The ethogram can be used as a template for further observations. Practitioners could use the data to support pigs&rsquo; need for occupation, such as by providing sufficient straw.</p>

CEP-based Activity Detection Services generated from IoT Data

<p>Data set accompanying the paper &quot;Data-driven Generation of Services for IoT-based Online Activity Detection&quot; submitted to the International Conference on Service-Oriented Computing (ICSOC) 2023.</p> <p>The data set has 6&nbsp;automatically generated activity detection services (*.siddhi files) for 6 different types of activities executed by 6 different production stations in a smart factory. The *.siddhi files have to be deployed to and activated on an instance of the <a href="http://siddhi.io">Siddhi</a> complex event processing platform.</p> <p>The data set includes the corresponding low-level IoT data for each activity (<strong>activity signature</strong>) that was used to generate the activity detection service (*.txt files). It also includes a visual representation of the activity signature for each type of activity (*.png files). To test the activity detection services, the *.txt files have to be read line by line, each line has to be send as one MQTT message to an MQTT broker and topic that the activity detection service is also listening to (standard: localhost).</p>

Associated data underlying the publication "Flipped Classroom Real-World Activities for Learning Open Computing Concepts"

<p>Various &ldquo;open&rdquo; concepts in Computing, such as open standards, open data, open licenses or system interoperability are becoming more important in the professional lives of software engineers. However, students usually do not receive a systematic education about these concepts ; rather they sporadically learn about a subset of these topics. This paper presents the revised version of the Open Computing course in the University of Zagreb, Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing (FER), which teaches a clear set of current topics focused on open data and correlating concepts. The new e-learning course is carried out using the &ldquo;flipped classroom&rdquo; educational method ; students construct their knowledge in a set of real-world mini-activities throughout the course, instead of passively learning from the official course resources. In this paper, we discuss our flipped classroom activities, their relation to revised Bloom&rsquo;s taxonomy of educational objectives, and present the evaluation of the first course instance us- ing this model. Students&rsquo; feedback shows they welcome this change in approach, finding the course useful and interesting, and preferring this method to the traditional full lecture setting.</p>

Data from: Beyond rhythm - a framework for understanding the frequency spectrum of neural activity

<p>Cognitive and behavioral processes are often accompanied by changes within well-defined frequency bands of the local field potential (LFP i.e., the voltage induced by neuronal activity). These changes are detectable in the frequency domain using the Fourier transform and are often interpreted as neuronal oscillations. However, aside some well-known exceptions, the processes underlying such changes are difficult to track in time, making their oscillatory nature hard to verify. In addition, many non-periodic neural processes can also have spectra that emphasize specific frequencies. Thus, the notion that spectral changes reflect oscillations is likely too restrictive. In this study, we use a simple yet versatile framework to understand the frequency spectra of neural recordings. Using simulations, we derive the Fourier spectra of periodic, quasi-periodic and non-periodic neural processes having diverse waveforms, illustrating how these attributes shape their spectral signatures. We then show how neural processes sum their energy in the local field potential in simulated and real-world recording scenarios. We find that the spectral power of neural processes is essentially determined by two aspects: 1) the distribution of neural events in time and 2) the waveform of the voltage induced by single neural events. Taken together, this work guides the interpretation of the Fourier spectrum of neural recordings and indicates that power increases in specific frequency bands do not necessarily reflect periodic neural activity.</p>

Data and code for: Wildfire activity in northern Rocky Mountain subalpine forests still within millennial-scale range of variability

<p>Increasing area burned across western North America raises questions about the precedence and magnitude of changes in fire activity, relative to the historical range of variability (HRV) that ecosystems experienced over recent centuries and millennia. Paleoecological records of past fire occurrence provide context for contemporary changes in ecosystems characterized by infrequent, high-severity fire regimes. Here we present a network of 12 fire-history records derived from macroscopic charcoal preserved in sediments of small subalpine lakes within a c. 10,000 km<sup>2</sup> landscape in the U.S. northern Rocky Mountains (Northern Rockies). We used this network to characterize landscape-scale burning over the past 2500 yr and evaluate the precedence of widespread regional burning experienced in the early 20<sup>th</sup> and 21<sup>st </sup>centuries. We further compare the Northern Rockies fire history to a previously published network of fire-history records in the Southern Rockies. In Northern Rockies subalpine forests, widespread fire activity was strongly linked to seasonal climate conditions, in contemporary, historical, and paleo records. The average estimated fire rotation period (FRP) over the past 2500 years was 164 yr (HRV: 127-225 yr), while the contemporary FRP from 1900-2021 CE was 215 yr. Thus, extensive regional burning in the early 20<sup>th</sup> century (e.g., 1910 CE) and in recent decades was within the HRV of recent millennia. Results from the Northern Rockies contrast with the Southern Rockies, which burned with less frequency on average over the past 2500 yr, and where 21<sup>st</sup>-century burning has exceeded the HRV. Our results support expectations that Northern Rockies fire activity will continue to increase with climatic warming, surpassing historical burning if more than one exceptional fire year akin to 1910 occurs within the next several decades. The societal and ecological consequences of climatic warming in subalpine forests will depend, in large part, on the magnitude of fire-regime changes relative to the past.</p>

<p>Machining workpieces on machine tools is an inherently energy intensive process. To achieve ever increasing tolerance requirements, thermal disturbances on machine tool and workpiece and resulting thermo-elastic deformations need to be addressed. Instead of cooling whole shopfloor environments and machines, desensitizing the process against temperature changes has the potential to reduce the carbon footprint of machining processes.</p> <p>To develop models for machine tool error prediction due to temperature, a comprehensive and diverse data set is essential. It includes data sources that capture relevant information about the machine tool&#39;s thermal behavior and its corresponding error. Hence, an experiment moving a machine tool with a fixed path is run for several hundred times with the same path for each run. Data for: Multifunctional fibers enable modulation of cortical and deep brain activity during cognitive behavior in macaques

<p>Recording and modulating neural activity <em>in vivo</em> enables investigations of the neurophysiology underlying behavior and disease, but there is a dearth of translational tools for simultaneous recording and localized receptor-specific modulation. We addressed this limitation by translating multifunctional fiber neurotechnology previously only available for rodent studies to enable cortical and subcortical neural recording and modulation in macaques. In the premotor cortex and putamen, we recorded single-neuron activity and local field potential oscillations during intracranial GABA infusions while a macaque performed a working memory task. We also recorded neuronal activity during saline, artificial cerebrospinal fluid, and no infusion control experiments. We characterized the dynamic effects of local infusions with multiple time series analysis techniques, including spectrotemporal analysis and state-space modeling. This dataset and accompanying software toolbox provide detailed insight into the electrophysiological effect of neurotransmitter receptor modulation in both cortical and subcortical structures in an awake macaque. </p>

Data from: Scn2a insufficiency alters spontaneous neuronal Ca2+ activity in somatosensory cortex during wakefulness

<p class="MsoNormal">SCN2A protein-truncating variants (PTV) can result in neurological disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability, but they are less likely to cause epilepsy in comparison to missense variants. While<em> <span>i</span>n vitro </em>studies showed PTV reduce action potential firing, consequences at <em>in vivo</em> network level remain elusive. Here, we generated a mouse model of Scn2a insufficiency using antisense oligonucleotides (Scn2a ASO mice), which recapitulated key clinical feature of SCN2A PTV disorders. Simultaneous two-photon <span>Ca<sup>2+</sup></span> imaging and electrocorticography (ECoG) in awake mice showed that spontaneous <span>Ca<sup>2+</sup></span> transients in somatosensory cortical neurons, as well as their pairwise co-activities were generally decreased in Scn2a ASO mice during spontaneous awake state and induced seizure state. The reduction of neuronal activities and paired co-activity are mechanisms associated with motor, social and cognitive deficits observed in our mouse model of severe Scn2a insufficiency, indicating these are likely mechanisms driving SCN2A PTV pathology.</p>
