This data set provides a 30-year record of Landsat TM and ETM+ derived forest phenology and the results of tree ring analyses for annual wood production and nitrogen and carbon isotopic composition at 113 selected forested sites in the eastern United States. The sites are located in four national parks: Prince William Forest Park (PRWI), Harpers Ferry National Historical Park (HAFE), Catoctin Mountain Park (CATO), and Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM). Phenology and tree ring data cover 1984-2013.

Tree species rankings based on publication rate (North America)
<p>A ranking of North American tree species based on keyword searches of genus and species using Web of Science, AGRICOLA, and CAB Abstracts. A bibliographic analysis using three bibliographic databases was conducted to understand the importance of North American tree species in literature published since 1900 and since the development of the last <i>Silvics of North America</i> in the 1980s. The<i> Silvics of North America</i> is the most comprehensive guide to North American tree-like species containing about 200 of the 696 tree-like species found in the literature. Depending on the bibliographic database, over 100,000 to over 600,000 publications on the 696 plant species can be obtained. At least half of the publication records are from 1985 forward. The ranking in this database is based on the average rank of six bibliographic searches (three bibliographic databases and two time frames: 1900-2020 and 1985-2020).</p>
Data from: Colonization and extinction dynamics among the plant species at tree bases in Paris (France)
1. In cities, trees growing along streets could play an important ecological role for spontaneous plants that grow at their bases. For example, these trees could represent corridors that allow species to move in the urban matrix by potentially connecting large green spaces (e.g., parks, gardens, etc.) We considered sets of urban trees in 15 streets as metapopulations for 15 plant species. Our objective was to determine the factors influencing the dynamics of colonization and extinction of populations based on the distance of the streets from green spaces and the biological traits of each species. 2. The species in 1,324 tree bases of the Bercy district of Paris were surveyed annually from 2009 to 2015. For each species and each street, we used SPOMSIM software to identify the best-fit metapopulation model: the propagule rain model (PRM), Levins model (LM), and the PRM and LM with a fixed extinction or a rescue effect. 3. The results demonstrated that the species more often conformed to the PRM in streets near green spaces, which suggested that green spaces could act as the sources for the populations in those streets. Species with seeds with long-term persistence more often conformed to the PRM, indicating that a soil seed bank helps species invade entire streets. Finally, a higher percentage of species with a short height conformed to models with a rescue effect, which indicated that those species resisted the effects of weeding by the city technical services more often than taller species. 4. Synthesis and applications. This study showed how the biological traits of species and the geography of the district determine the dynamics of the plants in the streets, and the results may provide important information for biodiversity management in cities.

Phylogenetic trees of genus Oncidium Sw. based on analysis of DNA sequences
<p>Genus <em>Oncidium Sw</em>. is widely regarded as a polyphiletic, and the taxonomic boundaries between him and such genera as <em>Odontoglossum</em> Kunth. or <em>Miltonia</em> Lindley remain blurred. The aim of the study was to determine the phylogenetic relationships within the genus <em>Oncidium</em> <em>s.lato</em> based on the DNA sequences analysis. The correlation between molecular data and geographical distribution of the studied species was also examined. Two markers were used for the analysis: the ITS sequence derived from the nuclear genome and the matK gene that is part of mitochondrial DNA. Sequences were obtained by DNA isolation from frozen leaves, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing. For their analysis in the PAUP* program, a feature-based parsimony (MP) method was used, and for assessing the reliability of the resulting trees, the non-parametric bootstrap method. The ITS MP search resulted in 10 000 trees (CI=0.49; RI=0.631). The aligned matrix resulted in 814 characters of which 433 were parsimony informative. The matK MP search resulted in 10 000 trees (CI=0.505; RI=0.714). The aligned matrix resulted in 1359 characters of which 358 were parsimony informative. </p> <p>This dataset contains two image files with phylogenetic trees - the first one based on ITS analysis of 190 species and the second one based on the matK analysis of 154 species. The upper numbers above branches are the Fitch values and lower numbers are the bootstrap values. The information about geographical distribution is added. The dataset includes also two NEXUS files (for ITS and for matK) with DNA sequences. </p>
