Low conversion efficiency of flight power increases with speed in the migratory bat Nathusius' pipistrelle

The efficiency with which flying animals convert metabolic fuel to mechanical power dictates an individual's flight behaviour and energy requirements. Despite the significance of this parameter, we lack empirical data on conversion efficiency for most species. Furthermore, the assumption that efficiency is constant across flight speeds has yet to be empirically confirmed, revealing a major outstanding question in animal flight. We show, through direct measurements of metabolic and aerodynamic power, that conversion efficiency in the migratory bat (Pipistrellus nathusii) increases with flight speed between 7.0 and 10.4%. Our findings suggest that peak conversion efficiency in this species occurs near maximum range speed, where the cost of transport is minimized. A meta-analysis of 16 bird and 8 bat species revealed a strong scaling relationship between estimated conversion efficiency and body mass, with no discernible differences between bats and birds. This has profound consequences for modelling flight behaviour as estimates assuming 23% efficiency underestimate flight costs for P. nathusii by almost 50% on average (36-62%). Our findings suggest that conversion efficiency may vary around an ecologically relevant optimum speed and provides a crucial baseline for investigating how this may drive the variation in conversion efficiency between species.

Syngas conversion into higher alcohols via bio-based CuCo-wood carbon catalyst

yngas conversion to higher alcohols (HAS) is a promising way of converting coal or biomass into liquid fuels. However, the high cost, low activity, and selectivity of C2+OH hinder the commercialization of this process. Herein, we investigate the stability and selectivity of low-cost Cu/Co carbon wood (CW) catalysts. We noticed that the nucleation of Cu/Co nanoparticles was influenced by different water–1,2-propylene glycol ratios in the solution, where two sizes of nanoparticles were observed. The optimal catalyst displayed a high CO conversion of 74.8% and selectivity of 58.7% for C2+OH, which is mainly linear primary alcohol. Besides the best-performing catalyst was tested under industrial conditions, where high stability and selectivity were maintained for up to 350 h. In addition, selectivity was analyzed using Density functional theory (DFT) insights to identify the binding strength of CO, which can further react to form CH3OH. As well as the route of CHx and CO coupling which eventually produces C2H5OH. High performance with a computational understanding of the Cu/Co-carbon wood catalyst will open new possibilities for developing selective materials toward the production of higher alcohols.

Temperature effects on the internal conversion of excited adenine and adenosine

This work aims to elucidate the dependence of the excited-state lifetime of adenine and adenosine on the temperature. So far, it has been experimentally shown that while adenine’s lifetime is unaffected by temperature, adenosine’s lifetime strongly depends on it. However, the non-Arrhenius temperature dependence has posed a challenge in explaining this phenomenon. We used surface hopping to simulate the dynamics of adenine and adenosine in the gas phase at 0 and 400 K. Temperature effects were incorporated in the initial conditions via Wigner sampling with thermal corrections. Our results confirm that adenine’s excited-state lifetime does not depend on temperature, while adenosine’s lifetime does. Adenosine’s dependency is due to intramolecular vibrational energy transfer from adenine to the ribose group. At 0 K, this transfer reduced the mean kinetic energy of adenine’s moiety so much that internal conversion is inhibited, and the lifetime elongated by a 2.3 factor compared to that at 400 K. The modeling also allowed definitively discarding the influence of viscosity, an alternative previously proposed explanation.

Mode Conversion Trimming in Asymmetric Directional Couplers Enabled by Silicon Ion Implantation - Supportive Information

An on-chip asymmetric directional coupler (DC) can convert fundamental modes to higher-order modes and is one of the core components of mode-division multiplexing (MDM) technology. In this study, we propose that waveguides of the asymmetric DC can be trimmed by silicon ion implantation to tune the effective refractive index and facilitate mode conversion into higher-order modes. Through this method of tuning, transmission changes of up to 18 dB have been realized with one ion implantation step. In addition, adjusting the position of the ion implantation on the waveguide can provide a further degree of control over the transmission into the resulting mode. The results of this work present a promising new route for the development of high-efficiency, low-loss mode converters for integrated photonic platforms, and aim to facilitate the application of MDM technology in emerging photonic neuromorphic computing.
