Building No.7 (RCMP Police Dog Kennel and Run)
This building was constructed by joining two smaller, existing buildings together and was used by the Police in their dog-breeding program during the 1940s through to the early 60s. The Kennels are not normally accessible to the public as plywood is left over the doors to the building during the operating season. The Dog Run was constructed as a fenced enclosure using driftwood logs as posts with wire mesh fencing between the posts. Much of the fencing is lying on the ground at the present time although the posts still define the Dog Run. Neither the Kennel nor the Run are currently used. Shanghai residents attitudes towards raccoon dogs
<p>Human-wildlife interactions become increasingly common in urban areas across all continents and ecosystem types. Depending on the context, human-wildlife interactions can be categorized as harmonious, neutral, or in conflict and raise cultural, economic, and ecological challenges in maintaining urban biodiversity. Understanding the mechanism behind the tolerance of residents to the presence of wildlife is vital to promoting a harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife in urban environments. To advance our knowledge of this mechanism, we developed a questionnaire to survey residents in Shanghai, China about their knowledge of and attitude towards raccoon dogs (<em>Nyctereutes procyonoides</em>), a species whose population is increasing in urban areas. Using 281 questionnaires, we conducted structural equation modeling to examine how relational values, including familiarity with raccoon dogs, perceived benefits and risks, together with residents' trust in wildlife management authorities, interactively influence the tolerance for this species. We found that the residents' familiarity with raccoon dogs positively influenced their tolerance, both directly and indirectly through increased perceived benefits and reduced perceived risks. Furthermore, trust in wildlife management authorities contributed to higher tolerance through perceived benefits. Our results suggested that education about the relational values of raccoon dogs to the public can reduce the traditional negative connotation for this species and promote the coexistence of people and raccoon dogs in the Shanghai urban environment. Based on our understanding of how raccoon dogs were culturally constructed and the willingness of residents to share landscapes with the species, we advocate that relational values play an important role in future urban biodiversity conservation planning. We also advocate for education programs that familiarize the public with raccoon dogs as well as other species, which can turn urban human-wildlife conflicts into harmonious relationships in Shanghai and other urban areas.</p>
Fecal standing crop with real time correction using scat detection dogs to estimate population density
<p>Population density is fundamental information for assessing the conservation status of species and support management and conservation actions for in situ populations, but is unknown for many forest species due to their difficulty in detection. The Fecal Standing Crop (FSC) method using detection dogs is an alternative for cryptic or elusive species. An intrinsic difficulty of FSC is the ability to find fecal samples in the field and to estimate the probability of which feces detection is influenced by degradation due to climatic conditions. Our goal was to propose a concurrent FSC parameter estimation using a scat detection dog under different climatic conditions and apply those parameters in a wild deer population. Ten fecal samples of gray brocket deer (Subulo gouazoubira) were placed weekly in a transect (24 x 1200 m) in both dry and wet seasons (12 weeks each). A scat detection dog was then employed to find experimental fecal samples to determine the FSC parameters that were subsequently used with naturally occurring fecal samples (also dog-detected) to estimate population density. The oldest dog found samples were 21 (Dry) and seven (Wet) days after placement, resulting in dog efficiency of 23% (Dry) and 30% (Wet). Adjusting the model to account for efficiency and scat durability, we estimated similar, seasonal, densities of 4.54 individuals km-2 (SD = 2.21, Dry) and 5.52 indiv. km-2 (SD = 3.71, Wet).</p> <p><em>Synthesis and applications:</em> Our results demonstrate that our concurrent methodology corrected the effects of weather and habitat on FSC parameters thereby allowing for accurate population density estimation. Additionally, this method can provide reasonably precise density estimates with a logistically feasible sample size, as demonstrated by simulation. Following our recommendations, this method allows a reliable estimate of population density because it incorporates any influence of study area, dog ability, and climate in fecal sample detection, providing fundamental information for the conservation of many cryptic and elusive species.</p>
Data from: genetic evidence of differential dispersal pattern in Asiatic wild dog: comparing populations with different pack size and tiger densities
<p><span>Dispersal is a multi-causal, crucial life-history event in shaping the genetic and behavioral structure of mammals. We assessed the dispersal pattern of dholes aka Asiatic wild dog (<em>Cuon alpinus</em>), a social monogamous mammal at two tiger reserves of Maharashtra with different degrees of pack size and competition with tigers i.e. Tadoba-Andhari (TATR, smaller pack size, higher tiger density) and Nawegaon-Nagzira (NNTR, larger pack size, lower tiger density). We used the microsatellite data of 174 individual genotypes (98 males and 67 females) to assess the dispersal pattern of dholes from two populations with varying pack size, tiger density, and landscape connectivity using gene flow as a proxy. We compared the population structure, pairwise F statistics, assignment index, and relatedness across a spatial scale. Overall, the results suggested a difference in sex-bias dispersal pattern for the two sub-populations, exhibiting significant results for female-biased dispersal in the TATR population with a smaller pack size and higher tiger density. Our study highlights the variability in sex-biased dispersal patterns in two different populations which could be the consequence of different variables such as pack size, tiger density, and geographical scale. The study warrants further quantitative investigation including several factors including individual behavior, pack composition, pack size, tiger density, etc. In the present Anthropocene era, determining the sex bias in dispersal patterns for a short-range, pack-living carnivore will help in devising an effective conservation management plan for their long-term survival.</span></p>
Supplementary methods and data for: Dogs with a vocabulary of object label remember labels for at least two years
<p>Long-term memory of words has a crucial role in the developing abilities of young children to acquire language. In dogs, the ability to learn object labels is present in only a small group of uniquely Gifted Word Learner (GWL) dogs. The ability of these dogs to acquire large vocabularies consisting of hundreds of names of dog toys through naturally occurring interactions in human families presents them as a valid model for studying language-related cognitive mechanisms. As they are very rare, little is known about the mechanisms through which they acquire such large vocabularies. In the current study, we tested the ability of five GWL dogs to retrieve 12 labelled objects two years after the object-label mapping acquisition. The dogs proved to remember the labels of between 3-9 objects. The results shed light on the process by which GWL dogs acquire an exceptionally large vocabulary of object names. As memory plays a crucial role in language development, these dogs supply a unique opportunity to study label retention in a non-linguistic species.</p>
Data from: Antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus and Enterococcus bacteria in rural dogs in Hungary - a preliminary report
<p><span>Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most relevant health challenges globally. Since resistant bacteria and their resistance genes circulate through the ecosystem, AMR is among the main focuses of One Health. Dogs are the best friends of humans, therefore their relationships with the owners are mostly very close. This connection can make the dogs vehicles of AMR between the environment and humans. Based on this hypothesis, we investigated faecal samples from 37 dogs in Inner Somogy, Hungary. We isolated and investigated for antibiotic susceptibility 21 and 6 strains of <em>Staphylococcus</em> and <em>Enterococcus</em> genera, respectively. Among staphylococci and enterococci, 12 and 3 strains proved to be resistant to at least one antibiotic. Multidrug resistant strains were detected only among coagulase negative staphylococci, mainly in <em>S. sciuri</em> species. The antibiotics that proved to be inefficient against the most strains were benzylpenicillin (8 strains), moxifloxacin (6 strains), clindamycin (5 <em>S. sciuri</em> strains), and fusidic acid (12 strains). In the case of moxifloxacin and fusidic acid, the MIC excessed the EUCAST clinical breakpoint. Analysing the epidemiological background of the animals, outdoors keeping and higher income level of the owners seemed risk factors of AMR carrying, though the sample size of this study could not confirm statistically the apparent interdependence.</span></p>
Dogs' looking times and pupil dilation response reveal expectations about contact causality
<p>Contact causality is one of the fundamental principles allowing us to make sense of our physical environment. From an early age, humans perceive spatiotemporally contiguous launching events as causal. Surprisingly little is known about causal perception in nonhuman animals, particularly outside the primate order. Violation-of-expectation paradigms in combination with eye-tracking and pupillometry have been used to study physical expectations in human infants. In the current study, we establish this approach for dogs (Canis familiaris). We presented dogs with realistic 3D animations of launching events with contact (regular launching event) or without contact between the involved objects. In both conditions, the objects moved with the same timing and kinematic properties. The dogs tracked the object movements closely throughout the study but their pupils were larger in the No-contact condition and they looked longer at the object initiating the launch after the No-contact event compared to the Contact event. We conclude that dogs have implicit expectations about contact causality.</p>
Attitudes Toward and Impacts of Free-roaming Dogs in Madagascar
<p>Free-roaming domesticated dogs interact with humans and wildlife in ways that can exacerbate or mitigate existing conflict. Dogs are known to predate wildlife as well as domestic livestock which contributes to increasing human-wildlife conflict. However, dogs can also mitigate conflict by protecting livestock from native predators or killing invasive pest species. Because attitudes toward dogs vary greatly, conflict often arises between humans over how to manage free-roaming dogs.</p> <p>We conducted surveys to assess attitudes toward domesticated dogs, behavior of dogs, and impacts on domestic and wild species. Dog owners who accessed Mad Dog Initiative's mobile vaccination clinics between 2014 and 2019 were asked to participate in the survey. Mobile clinic sites were located in communities surrounding Andasibe-Mantadia and Ranomafana National Parks in eastern Madagascar.</p> <p>We found that people were generally favorable toward spay/neuter options. Over 40% of participants reported that their dogs had killed wildlife and livestock predation by dogs was also common. There was high spatial variation in human attitudes, dog behavior, and predation rates.</p>
Data for: Speech naturalness detection and language representation in the dog brain
<p>Abstract<br> Family dogs are exposed to a continuous flow of human speech throughout their lives. However, the extent of their abilities in speech perception is unknown. Here, we used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to test speech detection and language representation in the dog brain. Dogs (n = 18) listened to natural speech and scrambled speech in a familiar and an unfamiliar language. Speech scrambling distorts auditory regularities specific to speech and to a given language, but keeps spectral voice cues intact. We hypothesized that if dogs can extract auditory regularities of speech, and of a familiar language, then there will be distinct patterns of brain activity for natural speech vs. scrambled speech, and also for familiar vs. unfamiliar language. Using multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) we found that bilateral auditory cortical regions represented natural speech and scrambled speech differently; with a better classifier performance in longer-headed dogs in a right auditory region. This neural capacity for speech detection was not based on preferential processing for speech but rather on sensitivity to sound naturalness.<br> Furthermore, in case of natural speech, distinct activity patterns were found for the two languages in the secondary auditory cortex and in the precruciate gyrus; with a greater difference in responses to the familiar and unfamiliar languages in older dogs, indicating a role for the amount of language exposure. No regions represented differently the scrambled versions of the two languages, suggesting that the activity difference between languages in natural speech reflected sensitivity to language-specific regularities rather than to spectral voice cues. Hierarchy of fear: experimentally testing ungulate reactions to lion, African wild dog and cheetah
<p>Experiments have begun demonstrating that the fear (antipredator responses) large carnivores inspire in ungulates can shape ecosystem structure and function. Most such experiments have focused on the impacts of either just one large carnivore, or all as a whole, rather than the different impacts different large carnivores may have in intact multi-predator-prey systems. Experimentally testing the relative fearfulness ungulates demonstrate toward different large carnivores is a necessary first step in addressing these likely differing impacts. We tested the fearfulness ungulates demonstrated to audio playbacks of lions (<em>Panthera leo</em>), African wild dogs (<em>Lycaon pictus</em>), cheetahs (<em>Acinonyx jubatus</em>) or non-predator controls (birds), in Greater Kruger National Park, South Africa. Ungulates ran more to lions than wild dogs and more to wild dogs than cheetahs, demonstrating a very clear hierarchy of fear. Those that did not run were vigilant (looked toward the sound) more upon hearing large carnivores than controls, being most vigilant to lions. Notably, predator prey preferences did not predict the patterns observed. Our results demonstrate that different large carnivores inspire different levels of fear in their ungulate prey, pointing to differing community-level impacts, which we discuss in relation to the ongoing worldwide decline and loss of large carnivores.</p>

<p>Behavioral genetics in dogs has focused on modern breeds, isolated subgroups <200 years old with distinctive physical, and, purportedly, behavioral characteristics. We interrogated breed stereotypes by surveying owners of 18,371 purebred and mixed-breed dogs, and densely genotyping (~45 million markers) a subset of 2,155 dogs. Most behavioral traits are heritable (h<sup>2</sup>>25%), and admixture patterns in mixed-breed dogs can reveal breed propensities. However, breed poorly predicts an individual purebred dog's behavioral phenotype, explaining just 9% of variation. Using genome-wide association, we identify 11 loci significantly associated with howling and other behaviors, and show characteristic breed behaviors are genetically complex. Behavior-associated loci are not unusually differentiated in modern breeds, but breed propensities do align, albeit weakly, with ancestral function. We propose behaviors now perceived as characteristic of modern breeds likely derive from thousands of years of polygenic adaptation predating breed formation, with modern breeds distinguished primarily by aesthetic, not behavioral, traits.</p>
Does prey scarcity increase the risk of wolf attacks on domestic dogs?
<p>Gray wolf (Canis lupus) predation on domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) is a considerable wolf-human conflict issue in several regions of Europe and North America but has not been well documented in the scientific literature. Livestock depredations by wolves may be related to the abundance of wild prey. Regardless of the presumed motivations of wolves for attacking dogs (likely due to interference competition and predation), the abundance of wild prey populations may also influence the risk of wolf attacks on dogs. We examined whether the annual number of tatal attacks by wolves on dogs was related to the abundance of primary prey, including wild boar (<em>Sus scrofa</em>) and roe deer (<em>Capreolus capreolus</em>) in Estonia, as well as the abundance of moose (<em>Alces alces</em>) in Finland. Statistical models resulted in significant negative relationships, thus providing evidence that the risk of attacks in both house yards (Estonia) and hunting situations (Finland) was highest when the density of wild prey was low. Wild ungulates cause damage to agriculture and forestry, but they seem to mitigate conflicts between wolves and humans; therefore, it is necessary to develop a holistic, multispecies management approach in which the importance of wild ungulates for large carnivores is addressed. </p>
