Advancing and retreating fronts in a changing climate: a percolation model of range shifts

Climate change causes considerable shifts in the geographic distribution of species worldwide. Most data on range movements, however, derive from relatively short periods, within which it is difficult to distinguish directional shifts from random fluctuations. For detecting a shift, it is indispensable to delineate the range precisely. We propose a new method for delineation based on percolation theory. We suggest marking the boundary between the connected and fragmented occurrence of the species (the hull). We demonstrate the advantages of this connectivity-based method on simulated examples in which a metapopulation is advancing vs. retreating along an environmental gradient with different velocities. The simulations show that the hull is a fractal and has the same dimension (7/4) even when the front is advancing or retreating relatively fast, compared to the generation time. It is particularly robust in the retreating (trailing) edge. Accordingly, we propose marking the range edge at the mean position of the hull, the 'connectivity limit' of the species. Theoretical considerations suggest that the position of the connectivity limit is statistically more reliable than those limits that are delineated according to the outermost occurrences, and the connectivity-based method is broadly applicable to real-life data.

St Bride's Graveyard, Callander - McKinlay Front
The front (S side) of the prominent headstone of James McKinlay, 'tacksman of Inverchagernie'. This is the most visible and only upright stone left in the graveyard. The other remaining stones are recumbent slabs now completely covered by turf. The McKinlay family are thought to have lived at Anie in the 17th and 18th centuries. Anie Farm lies about 500m to the NE of St. Bride's Graveyard, to the opposite the A84 main road. The stone has an ogee-style top and beneath is the carved head and wings of an angel. Beneath is the inscription on a relief tablet : 'Sacred to the memory of James McKinlay late Tacksman of Inverchagernie who died Feb 4th 1825 aged 65. This stone erected by his beloved wife Elenora Cameron. To his left lie the remains of his son Peter who died the 4th of June 1828 aged 31 years'. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab
Ingenuity In Front Of "Raised Ridge"
On SOL-152 Ingenuity made its 10th flight. Unlike previous flights, this was intended to actualy scout the unique rock formation known as "Raised Ridge." This was due its location being in an area that could allow the Perseverance rover to become immobilized by the large sand dunes that the rover would have had to traverse through. It also allowed Ingenuity to test more of its capability for long programmed flights that required maneuvers to create somewhat of an inverted 'U" and hovering to take multiple shifted images to allow for parallax (stereo) viewing with anaglyph & polarized glasses for "3D" views. Even more important is the ability to create 3D models like this one with off-the-shelf photogrammetry tools like 'Reality Capture' and even Apple's free 'Object Capture'.
