CONTRAST-IT corpus: Italian data collection
<p>This data collection served to create<strong> </strong>the <a href="http://philhist-contrast-it-noske.philhist.unibas.ch/cnt/run.cgi/first_form"><strong>CONTRAST-IT</strong></a><strong> corpus.</strong> </p> <p><strong>CONTRAST-IT </strong>is a medium-size multilingual corpus (including ca. 1.5 million words) based on a comparable collection of articles published in online daily newspapers. The articles are written in five languages: Italian (from Italy), French (from France), Spanish (from Spain), English (from the UK), and German (from Germany).</p> <p>This <strong>Italian dataset</strong> includes 300'000 words drawn from 531 articles. All the texts collected are authentic, full-length electronic journalistic articles, chosen based on their high representativeness of contemporary Italian newspaper language. An archive of data from Resonant Column and Cyclic Torsional Shear Tests performed on Italian Clays
<p>A large data-set of index and dynamic parameters measured from resonant column (RC) and cyclic torsional shear(CTS) tests on 170 undisturbed isotropically consolidated fine-grained specimens deriving from 90 sites in Central and Northern Italy is made available. Tests were all performed over the past 20 years at the Geotechnical Laboratory of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department of the Florence University using the same apparatus and following the same standardized procedures.</p> <p>The experimental data are organized in an excel file (named as “Italian_Clays_Archive.xlsx”). For each tested sample, the main physical, index and dynamic properties measured are archived with the code number of the sample (No) in the sheet named as “Dataset” as well as any information available about the borehole from which the sample has been taken. The list and the meaning of the symbols used can be found in the sheet named as “Legend”. Other sheets containing borehole stratigraphy are named as “XX-ST” (where “XX” stands as the bore-hole code, BH) and they can be recalled directly from the “Dataset” sheet. Note that stratigraphy is given in its original format, when available. However, depth and thickness of each layer can be easily deduced by the figure provided and the soil lithology is well represented by the symbol used that are those generally adopted internationally. Finally, the sheets named as "YY-CTS-STEPZ" (where “YY” and “Z” stand as the sample code, No, and the step number, respectively) contain the shear stress and strain values measured after CTS tests at different steps (i.e. amplitudes of the cyclic dynamic torsional loading applied) during the 1st, 5th, 15th, 20th and 25<sup>th</sup>.and/or and/or the corresponding shear modulus and damping ratio calculated from the same cycles.</p> <p>The selected samples were taken mostly in Holocene and Pleistocene fluvio-lacustrine soil deposits at depths ranging from 1 m to 75 m below ground level and they mainly consist of normally and over-consolidated clayey silts or clays (1 < OCR < 9.4) of medium-to-high plasticity (4 < PI < 84), with very low-to high consistency (-1< Ic < 1.9) and initial void ratio, e<sub>0</sub>, ranging between 0.175 and 2.456. The database also includes some samples of organic clays of low consistency, very high water content and void ratio and low unit weight. The initial (small strain) values of shear modulus, G<sub>0</sub>, and damping ratio, D<sub>0</sub>, range between 21 MPa and 292 MPa and between 0.8% and 5.1%, respectively. The smallest and the largest shear strain values induced by RC and CTS tests are 1.9x10<sup>-5</sup> % and 6.3x10<sup>-1</sup>%, respectively.</p>
Analysis of the different approaches adopted in the Italian regions to care for patients affected by COVID-19
<p>The dataset reports the daily cumulative number of patients affected by COVID-19 from 24th of February to 29th of April 2020 gathered from the following website <a href="https://github.com/pcm-dpc/COVID-19">https://github.com/pcm-dpc/COVID-19</a>. Data are produced and published by the Italian Civil Protection Department. Excel was used to build a time-series sheet. Data were subsequently fitted on the basis of a logistic function to capture the onset of the different epidemic phases in each Italian region.</p>

Back into the past: Resurveying random plots to track community changes in Italian coastal dunes
<p>This dataset includes two excel sheets. The first contains vegetation data ("species_data", a matrix of 668 plots x 213 species) and the second contains plant functional traits data ("traits_data") that were used to evaluate temporal changes in taxonomic and functional diversity of Mediterranean coastal dune habitats.</p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>As to the first sheet ("species_data"): vegetation data were collected at two points in time (Time 0, hereafter T<sub>0</sub>: 2002-2007, and Time 1, herafter T<sub>1</sub>: 2017-2018) in 334 randomly-sampled, georeferenced, standardized (4 m<sup>2</sup>) plots. Historical data used for the resurveying study were extracted from RanVegDunes (Sperandii et al. 2017). Details on the resurveying protocol can be found in Sperandii et al. (2019), but in short: resampling activities took place during the same months in which the original sampling was done, and plot positions were relocated using a GPS unit on which historical geographic coordinates were stored. Plots are located in coastal dune sites along the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic coasts of Central Italy, and belong to herbaceous communities classified into the following EU Habitats (sensu Annex I 92/43/EEC): upper beach (Habitat 1210), embryo dunes (Habitat 2110), shifting dunes (Habitat 2120), fixed dunes (Habitat 2210), and dune grasslands (Habitat 2230). A subset of plots could not be classified into an EU Habitat because they were highly disturbed or invaded by alien species ("NC-plots"). The matrix includes cover data, expressed as percentage (%) cover. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>As to the second sheet ("traits_data"): this sheet includes data on 3 plant functional traits, two of them quantitative (plant height, specific leaf area - SLA) and one qualitative (plant lifespan). Data for the quantitative traits represent species-level average trait values and were extracted from "TraitDunes", a database registered on the global platform TRY (Kattge et al., 2020). Functional trait data were collected in the same sites covered by the resurveying study. Reconstructing hotspots of genetic diversity from glacial refugia and subsequent dispersal in Italian common toads (Bufo bufo)
<p>Genetic diversity feeds the evolutionary process and allows populations to adapt to environmental changes. However, we still lack a thorough understanding of why hotspots of genetic diversity are so 'hot'. Here, we analysed the relative contribution of bioclimatic stability and genetic admixture between divergent lineages in shaping spatial patterns of genetic diversity in the common toad <i>Bufo bufo</i> along the Italian peninsula. We combined population genetic, phylogeographic and species distribution modelling (SDM) approaches to map ancestral areas, glacial refugia, and secondary contact zones. We consistently identified three phylogeographic lineages, distributed in northern, central and southern Italy. These lineages expanded from their ancestral areas and established secondary contact zones, before the last interglacial. SDM identified widespread glacial refugia in peninsular Italy, sometimes located under the present-day sea-level. Generalized linear models indicated genetic admixture as the only significant predictor of the levels of population genetic diversity. Our results show that glacial refugia contributed to preserving both levels and patterns of genetic diversity across glacial-interglacial cycles, but not to their formation, and highlight a general principle emerging in Mediterranean species: higher levels of genetic diversity mark populations with substantial contributions from multiple genetic lineages, irrespective of the location of glacial refugia.</p>
