Weekly grab samples and manual specific conductivity, temperature, and turbidity measurements of streams at the LTER intensive and hillslope sites located in Macon County, North Carolina, within the Little Tennessee River Basin
Weekly grab samples and manual specific conductivity, temperature, and turbidity measurements were taken at 21 streams and rivers in Macon County, NC. Nine intensive sites were monitored weekly in 2010-2011, nine hillslope sites were monitored biweekly in 2012-2013, and three river sites were monitored weekly in 2010-2011 and biweekly in 2012-2013. Data from a brief study of three streams at the Buck Creek Pine Barrens in Clay County, NC, also was completed, as well as one grab sample at Porters Creek, Mountain View Intermediate School. Water samples were analyzed for chemistry at the Coweeta Analytical Lab. Specific conductivity and temperature data were collected using a YSI 30 handheld conductivity meter. Turbidity data were collected using a Hach 2100P turbidimeter.
In situ soil moisture measurements for the Hillslope study from 5 sites located in Macon County, North Carolina, within the Upper Little Tennessee River Basin
This study was conducted across 5 sites that served as part of the regional hillslope study. Synoptic soil moisture measurements were measured using a Theta Probe that measures surface soil moisture up to a depth of 6cm. Site locations include 18 plots in WS14, 17 plots in Fall Branch, 13 plots in WS18, 10 plots on Mica City Road, and 12 plots at Ammons Creek. The measurement period varied among sites. The most complete is WS14 lasting about 3 years of regular measurements starting in 2011.
Termite foraging data from bait mass loss at eleven locations at the Jornada Basin LTER site, 1988-2000
This data package contains data on yearly mass loss of termite baits at the Jornada Basin LTER site in southern New Mexico, USA. Termites are important to litter decomposition and nutrient cycling in desert grasslands. This study measured annual feeding activity on paper baits by subterranean termites in desert shrubland and black-grama (Bouteloua eriopoda) grassland ecosystems over twelve years. Eleven sites, known as the "consumer plots" were included in the study. Toilet paper roll termite baits were placed on grids on each consumer plot. Data include initial bait weights before deployment, and bait weights after they were retrieved from the field each year. Mass loss of the baits was calculated as a measure of termite foraging activity. This study is complete.
Annual measurements of vegetation canopy and basal gap intercepts from the three Conmod Pilot study locations at Jornada Basin LTER, 2008-2016
This data package contains annual measurements of vegetation canopy and basal gap sizes from transects at the Connectivity Modifier (Conmod) Pilot study on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2008-2016. There were 3 sites for this study: Gravelly Ridges, Aeolian, and Dona Ana. Within each site, there were 8 study plots, 4 of which were treatment plots where connectivity modules (conmods) were installed to decrease gap sizes between perennial vegetation. The plots were 8 x 8 meters and had an 8 x 8 meter buffer zone on both sides of the plot (upwind and downwind). Beginning in 2008, vegetation canopy and basal gap sizes were collected annually in all plots using the gap intercept method. These data were collected in 2008-2010, 2012 and 2016. At each plot, four parallel 24-meter transects crossing the upwind buffer, the plot, and the downwind buffer were measured. These parallel transects were spaced at 0.8, 2.8, 4.3, and 7.2 meter intervals across the plot and buffer areas. This study is complete (finished in 2016) and was the pilot study to the newer Cross Scale Interactions Study.

This data package contains annual measurements of vegetation cover, species, and height from transects at the Connectivity Modifier (Conmod) Pilot study on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2008-2016. There were 3 sites for this study: Gravelly Ridges, Aeolian, and Dona Ana. Within each site, there were 8 study plots, 4 of which were treatment plots where connectivity modules (conmods) were installed to decrease gap sizes between perennial vegetation. The plots were 8 x 8 meters and had an 8 x 8 meter buffer zone on both sides of the plot (upwind and downwind). Beginning in 2008, vegetation cover by species, and vegetation heights were collected annually in all plots using the line-point intercept method. These data were collected in 2008-2010, 2012 and 2016. At each plot, four parallel 24-meter transects crossing the upwind buffer, the plot, and the downwind buffer were measured. These parallel transects were spaced at 0.8, 2.8, 4.3, and 7.2 meter intervals across the plot and buffer areas. Vegetation cover and height were read at points arranged at 25 centimeter increments along each transect. This study is complete (finished in 2016) and was the pilot study to the newer Cross Scale Interactions Study.
Bedload data (deposition from overland flow) measured at the three Conmod Pilot study locations at Jornada Basin LTER, 2008-2010
This data package contains measurements of bedload samples (suspended particles) collected during overland flow events in the Connectivity Modifier (Conmod) Pilot study on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2008-2010. There were 3 sites for this study: Gravelly Ridges, Aeolian, and Dona Ana. Within each site, there were 8 study plots, 4 of which were treatment plots where connectivity modules (conmods) were installed to decrease gap sizes between perennial vegetation. The plots were 8 x 8 meters and had an 8 x 8 meter buffer zone on both sides of the plot (upwind and downwind). To collect water from overland flow events, four to six belowground catchment containers were installed in upslope and downslope buffer zones at each study plots. Bedload containers were monitored monthly 2008, 2009, and 2010. Bedload material collected by the containers during overland flow events was weighed and analyzed for organic matter content by the loss on ignition method. This study is complete and was the pilot study to the newer Cross Scale Interactions Study.
Repeat, ground-based photographs of microplots at the three Conmod Pilot study locations at Jornada Basin LTER, 2008-2016
This data package contains ground-based, repeat photographs taken at plots in the Connectivity Modifier (Conmod) Pilot study on the Jornada Experimental Range from 2008-2016. There were 3 sites for this study: Gravelly Ridges, Aeolian, and Dona Ana. Within each site, there were 8 study plots, 4 of which were treatment plots where connectivity modules (conmods) were installed to decrease gap sizes between perennial vegetation. The plots were 8 x 8 meters and had an 8 x 8 meter buffer zone on both sides of the plot (upwind and downwind). Beginning in 2008, photographs were taken once to twice per year at ten microplots located within the 8 study plots per site to document plant litter, plant germination and growth, and soil deposition/removal by wind and water transport. Five photos were taken of each microplot: One overhead (from directly over the microplot) and 4 lateral views at ground level from each cardinal direction. This data package only contains archives with the overhead photographs, but lateral view photos are available on request. Photo filenames are fully descriptive of the site, plot, microplot, photo view, and date taken (see Methods description for details). This study is complete (finished in 2016) and was the pilot study to the newer Cross Scale Interactions Study.
Plant Cover at Permanent Quad Locations on the Jornada Experimental Range, 1915-ongoing
This ongoing data set contains basal cover of perennial grasses and canopy cover of shrubs in 122 1m x 1m quadrats on the Jornada Experimental Range in the northern extent of the Chihuahuan Desert of New Mexico, USA. These quadrats were established to investigate livestock grazing effects on plant community dynamics as well as responses to variable climatic conditions over time. Vegetation monitoring is carried out by charting the basal areas of perennial grasses and canopy areas of shrubs within each quadrat. Quadrats were established at different times, with start dates from 1915 to 1932. Specific quadrat locations were selected for a variety of reasons, but the overall intent was to represent varying plant community conditions across the Jornada Experimental Range. From 1915 to 1924 charting was done by dividing the quadrat frame into a decimeter grid using straps and reproducing locations of plants on grid paper. From 1925 to 2016 charting was done using a pantograph. With few exceptions, quadrats were charted until 1947, and a portion of the quadrats were charted intermittently between 1947 and 1979. Sampling resumed again in 1995 and continues every 5-6 years. Charts are digitally scanned, georeferenced, and chart features are digitally reproduced by hand. This data set is not yet complete; charts are actively being processed by Jornada Experimental Range staff and will be updated to this data package as they become available. A companion data package of counts of perennial forbs and subshrubs for each quadrat is also available for this project (data package knb-lter-jrn.210351002).

Soil Particle Size Analysis at Permanent Quadrat locations, Jornada Experimental Range, 2001-2020
This completed dataset, from samples collected in 2001 and 2020, contains soil particle size analysis (PSA) and sand fractionation data from soil cores collected at 117 quadrat locations that are part of the Jornada Experimental Range's long-term Permanent Quadrats study. The goal of this effort was to help characterize plant-scale factors related to vegetation dynamics observed in the Permanent Quadrats. At each quadrat location, 4 cores were collected at 2 depths (0-5cm and 5-20cm) and assessed for percent sand, silt and clay. The sand fraction, if large enough, was then separated into 5 sand size classes (53-106 micrometers, 106-250 micrometers, 250-500 micrometers, 500-1000 micrometers, 1000-2000 micrometers) to measure the percent fraction of each. Long term vegetation data from this study are available in data packages knb-lter-jrn.210351001 and knb-lter-jrn.210351002.
Stream algal transect locations, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica (1993-2023, ongoing)
As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the abundance and species distribution of algal mats in glacial meltwater streams of that region.
