Female skull injured by a medieval sword
This skull of a young woman contains eight stab wounds. They are caused by a sharp weaponry, most likely a sword. In the forehead are two large, horizontal pierced stab wounds perceptible. The upper stab wound is 0,95 inch long, the lower is 1,26 inch. On the left side of the forehead are also light, vertical cuts, four in total. The woman is attacked right at her occiput, given the presence of two shallow, vertical stab wounds.  The skull was found during an archaeological excavation at Langedijk in the Dutch province North-Holland. It reminds of the war between the West Frisians and the Duke of Holland near Vronen (1297 A.D.) Wmid-e521a8 - Early Medieval aestel
A cast silver artefact comprising a three-dimensional representation of a fish-like animal, in two pieces. The main body and a separate tail. At the widest end is a head with an open mouth, the opening being rectangular in shape. The jaws are also rectangular, with the upper lip thicker than the lower lip. Drilled circular nostrils are present on the corners of the upper lip, with a larger circular recess between them. Two raised blue glass eyes sit in the centre of the head, with curved raised lines above and between them, suggestive of a nasal bridge and eyebrows. Two ears, made from a circular shape with a chevron inside a recessed field, are present on either side of the head. A ridge formed of semi-circles creates a backbone or crest along the midline of the creature's back. The rest of the body is covered with crescent-shaped stamps, resembling fish scale. Wmid-a6c396 - Probable Post Medieval pendant
A complete copper alloy zoomorphic (bird like) probable pendant, of uncertain dating but probably Post medieval (AD 1500 to AD 1700). The probable pendant is curved, and an almost a teardrop shape. The design resembles a bird with beak against breast, the long neck forming a loop. From the body, it tapers down to a sharp point at the base of the tail. A concave eye is present on one side. A complete lead alloy weight, probably from a net or line of unknown dating, probably Medieval to Modern in dating (AD 1200 - AD 1900). The weight is sub-cylindrical, with a central swelling. Early medieval coped stone, St Buryan, Cornwall
This stone was until recently located in the churchyard of St Buryan church, west Cornwall. It is very bady eroded, and any decorative details are very hard to see. The course granite has eroded considerably. This quick attempt to enhance the surface shows some geometric 'triangle' designs along one side, and perhaps two figures along the other. The ambient occlusion map has been used as the diffuse texture here to better show the carved details. Wmid-23e5b9 - Early Medieval strap end
An incomplete copper alloy strap end of Early-Medieval date (AD 750-900). The object is flat in profile and sub-rectangular in plan with a rounded tip. The opposing terminal is partially retained with the upper plate of this split end partially present, with the lower plate missing. The upper surface of the plate has an incised decoration composed of a moulded and incised zoomorphic style terminal with a rounded snout with two punched pellets to indicate nostrils, above which are two punched pellets to indicate eyes. Above the zoomorphic terminal is a pair of incised comma shaped ears, above which is an incised Trewhiddle style design of interlaced animal limbs within an incised outer border. Wmid-37e1ef - Medieval spindle whorl
An incomplete lead or lead alloy bi convex decorated spindle whorl, of probably the Medieval period, dating from c. AD 1100 to AD 1450. The spindle whorl is sub circular in shape, and lentoid in section. Faint traces of decoration are on both the upper and lower surfaces, probably chevrons. The central hole is circular in shape and has been cast / set roughly centrally. It has a internal diameter of 8.6 mm. Wmid-438e0c - Post Medieval buckle frame
An incomplete silvered white metal rectangular buckle frame of Post Medieval dating (AD 1690 to AD 1720). Less than 50% of the buckle frame is present, consisting of one loop. The front has been decorated with a ring and dot design in each surviving corner and one in between. Triangular knops are present on the corners. Crescents are present linking each ring and dot roundel. Rouletted grooves are present on the inner edges of the crescents. The reverse of the buckle frame is flat and undecorated.
