Pets Survey: Twin Cities Household Ecosystem Project

We designed our methods to estimate carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus fluxes through individual households, and to address two primary questions: 1. How are these fluxes distributed across households? 2. What biophysical and socioeconomic factors contribute to differences in these fluxes across households? Our hybrid approach combines: 1. A mailed survey 2. Energy provider records 3. On-the-ground landscape measurements 4. A computational tool (the Household Flux Calculator) 4. Parcel data (interpreted using GIS) The resulting dataset includes information on biophysical and socioeconomic variables that potentially influence household-level fluxes of elements. Using this method to study element fluxes at the household level allows us to explicitly link consumption choices and element fluxes.

Data from: Total Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio in plasma predict amyloid-PET status, independent of clinical AD diagnosis

Background: Research has focussed upon the identification of a blood-based biomarker to inform clinicians on the likelihood of Alzheimer's disease pathology prior to ordering the CSF and PET testing. Objective: To explore if the plasma total Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio is a reliable predictor of the amyloid-PET status we have explored the association between these two variables in a subset of the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) study of ageing cohort. Methodology: Taking plasma samples at three separate time points, we assessed the total Aβ42/Aβ40 ratio in plasma (TP42/40) with regard to neocortical amyloid beta (Aβ) burden via PET SUVR, and investigated both association with Aβ-PET status and correlation (and agreement) with SUVR. Results: The TP42/40 plasma ratio was associated with PET status at all time points (p<0.013). Correlations with SUVR were similar across each time point, with Spearman's Rho reaching -0.64 (p<0.0001). Area under the curve (AUC) values were highly reproducible over time points, with values ranging from 0.880 at 36 months to 0.913 at 54 months. Assessing the healthy control (HC) group only, the same relationships were found. Conclusions: The current study demonstrates reproducibility of the plasma assay to discriminate between amyloid-PET positive and negative over three time points, which can help to substantially reducing the screening rate of failure (SRF) for clinical trials targeting pre-clinical or prodromal disease. Classification of evidence: This study provides Class II evidence that plasma total AB42/AB40 ratio is associated with neocortical amyloid burden as measured by PET SUVR.

Data from: Intermediate Flortaucipir uptake is associated with A&[beta]-PET & CSF-tau in asymptomatic adults

Objective: To investigate relationships between tau-PET binding and other established Alzheimer's disease (AD) markers in cognitively normal individuals at increased risk of AD. Methods: One-hundred-nineteen late-middle-aged and older adults with a parental or multiple-sibling history of AD (PREVENT-AD cohort, mean age=67±5) underwent tau PET ([18F]flortaucipir), β-amyloid (Aβ) PET ([18F]NAV4694), and cognitive assessment. A subsample of 74 participants also had CSF phosphorylated (p)-tau data available. We investigated regional tau SUVR differences between Aβ-positive and Aβ-negative individuals using general linear models adjusted for age and sex. In regions showing higher flortaucipir binding in Aβ-positive individuals, we assessed whether flortaucipir SUVRs were related to p-tau and cognitive performance. We repeated these analyses iteratively removing the participant with the highest entorhinal flortaucipir SUVR to determine thresholds at which associations with Aβ-PET, CSF p-tau and cognition were detectable. Results: Aβ-positive individuals had higher flortaucipir SUVRs than Aβ-negative ones in limbic, temporal, occipital, and inferior parietal regions. Increased flortaucipir SUVRs in a subset of predominantly medial temporal regions were also associated with increased CSF p-tau and worse cognitive performance. The association of flortaucipir in the entorhinal cortex with CSF p-tau, Aβ, or delayed memory were inapparent among individuals with SUVRs below 1.12, 1.23 and 1.41 respectively. Conclusions: Flortaucipir binding in AD-typical regions is associated with established AD markers. Except for the association of flortaucipir-binding with cognition, these findings were not driven by results in individuals classified as tau-positive according to conventional tau thresholds. These observations suggest that early (sub-threshold) elevation in flortaucipir signal is clinically meaningful.

Data from: Free-ranging dogs prefer petting over food in repeated interactions with unfamiliar humans

Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris) are the first species to have been domesticated, and unlike other domesticated species, they have developed a special bonding with their owners. The ability to respond to human gestures and language, and the hypersocial behaviours of dogs are considered key factors that have led them to become man's best friend. Free-ranging dogs provide an excellent model system for understanding the dog-human relationship in various social contexts. In India, free-ranging dogs occur in all possible human habitations. They scavenge among garbage, beg for food from humans, give birth in dens close to human habitations, and establish social bonds with people. However, there is ample dog-human conflict on the streets, leading to morbidity and mortality of dogs. Hence the ability to assess an unfamiliar human before establishing physical contact could be adaptive for dogs especially in the urban environment. We tested a total of 103 adult free-ranging dogs to investigate their response to immediate social and long-term food and social rewards. The dogs were provided a choice of obtaining a food reward either from the experimenter's hand or the ground. The dogs avoided making physical contact with the unfamiliar human. While immediate social reward was not effective in changing this response, the long-term test showed a strong effect of the social contact on the dogs' response. Our results revealed that these dogs tend to build trust based on affection, and not food rewards. The study provides significant insights into the dynamics of dog-human interactions on the streets and subsequent changes in behaviours of dogs through the process of learning.

Adults of both sexes of G. sigillatus always have short tegmina (top wings) covering about half of the abdomen. Adults of both sexes of A. domesticus have longer tegmina reaching near tip of abdomen and hind (bottom) wings (see arrows) that extend beyond tip of abdomen. In culture, some adults of the latter species shed their hind wings (Walker 1977). Such an occurrence can be confirmed by the absence of any hind wing or the presence of just a stump.
