Large herbivore biomass in protected areas
<p>Large herbivores provide key ecosystem processes, but have experienced massive historical losses and are under intense pressure, leaving current ecosystems with dramatically simplified faunas relative to the long-term evolutionary norm. Hampered by a shifting baseline, natural levels of large-herbivore biomass are poorly understood and seldom targeted. Here, we present a collation of large-herbivore biomass data from published sources as well as personal communication. The data includes continent, ecosystem name, latitude, longitude, large herbivore biomass in kg/km<sup>2</sup> and the source of the data. It can be used together with net primary productivity (e.g., using satellite-derived NPP retrieved from http://files.ntsg.umt.edu/data/NTSG_Products/MOD17/GeoTIFF/MOD17A3/GeoTIFF_30arcsec/) to explore the scaling relationship between producer and consumer.</p>

Benthic macroinvertebrates in a protected area within the Brazilian savanna
<p><strong>This dataset is part of manuscript: <em>Vanishing springs and benthic macroinvertebrates as environmental quality indicators in a savanna protected area, Brazil</em></strong><br> <br> In the Neotropics, especially in southeastern Brazil, due to sugarcane and eucalypt monocultures, and the expansion of industries and the largely unplanned urban centers entire aquatic ecosystems are threatened. Nonetheless, benthic macroinvertebrates are important biomonitoring tools to assess the biotic and abiotic condition of endangered freshwater environments. In this study we address how benthic macroinvertebrate diversity respond to the combined effect of local environmental factors. We also aimed to evaluate how benthic macroinvertebrates diversity respond according to the habitat integrity. We expected to find higher diversity in the sampling sites with higher habitat integrity (i.e., low potential of hydrogen, electrical conductivity and water temperature, and high canopy coverage and concentration of dissolved oxygen). By using a multivariate approach (i.e., PCA) and a regression analysis (i.e., Linear Mixed-Effect Model) we were able to address the combined effect of local environmental variables on the benthic macroinvertebrate community. Our results show a negative effect of the environmental factors on the benthic macroinvertebrate diversity. As expected, sites with higher integrity and water quality values according to, respectively, the Habitat Integrity Index (i.e., HII) and the Biological Monitoring Working Party (i.e., BMWP’) tended to have higher benthic macroinvertebrates diversity. <p>Migrants from protected areas may buffer the risk of harvest-induced evolutionary changes in exploited populations that face strong selective harvest pressures in both terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Understanding the mechanisms favouring genetic rescue through migration could help ensure sustainable harvest outside protected areas and conserve genetic diversity inside those areas. We developed a stochastic individual-based metapopulation model to evaluate the potential for migration from protected areas to mitigate the evolutionary consequences of selective harvest. We parameterized the model with detailed data from individual monitoring of two populations of bighorn sheep subjected to trophy hunting. We tracked horn length through time in a metapopulation including large protected and trophy-hunted populations connected through male breeding migrations. We quantified and compared declines in horn length and rescue potential under various combinations of migration rate, hunting rate in hunted areas and temporal overlap in timing of harvest and migrations, which affects the migrants' survival and chances to breed within exploited areas. Our simulations suggest that the effects of size-selective harvest on male horn length in hunted populations can be dampened or avoided if harvest pressure is low, migration rate is substantial, and migrants have a low risk of being shot. Intense size-selective harvest impacts the phenotypic and genetic diversity in horn length, and population structure through changes in proportions of large-horned males, sex ratio and age structure. When hunting pressure is high and overlaps with male migrations, effects of selective removal also emerge in the protected population, so that instead of a genetic rescue of hunted populations, our model predicts undesirable effects inside protected areas. Our results stress the importance of a metapopulational approach to management, to promote genetic rescue from protected areas and limit ecological and evolutionary impacts of harvest on both harvested and protected populations.</p>
Barcode database of scleractinian corals (Cnidaria, Scleractinia) in two tropical marine protected areas (Perhentian and Redang Islands Marine Parks, Malaysia)
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Coral reefs are particularly vulnerable to climate change as an elevation of sea surface temperatures would cause most coral species to bleach rapidly by expulsing their algal symbionts Symbiodiniaceae. Loss of these symbionts in coral species during stress-related "bleaching" events can lead to mass mortality of these corals and the collapse of the associated reef ecosystem. This makes the inventory of the diversity of coral species and their symbionts, in particular, genetic diversity, critical to the understanding of the assessment of coral reef resilience and ecosystem sustainability. The use of DNA barcoding has been proven useful in biodiversity assessments and monitoring schemes of marine ecosystems, particularly the highly diverse coral reef ecosystems. However, this information is lacking in Malaysia. Therefore, a comprehensive reference database of genetic sequences that represent the present coral reef biodiversity in the country would be needed. Here, we barcoded the scleractinian coral samples, the reef-building corals, collected from the two marine protected areas of Malaysia, Perhentian and Redang Islands Marine Parks, using the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) marker. The data released from this project represent the first comprehensive reference database of the scleractinian coral diversity on the northeastern coasts of Malaysian coral reefs. A total of 62 nucleotide COI sequences of scleractinian corals collected from the two marine parks were obtained. Of these, a total of 34 taxa belonging to nine families were included in the dataset. This dataset added information on the occurrence and distribution of scleractinian coral species from the two tropical marine protected areas in the South China Sea (Western Pacific).</span></p>

"The sound comes from a meadow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California. The meadow is at an elevation of 2400 meters near a mountain named Olancha Peak, which is 3700 meters in altitude. Ihave a group of friends with which Ibackpack (trek) into the mountains. Our goal was to spend some time in the mountains and hike to the top of Olancha Peak (…) By the time we reached the meadow, we were in a forest and there was still snow on the ground in some places. We took the trip in June of 2006. The Sierra Nevada Mountains are a large mountain range. Much of the range is protected by national parks or preserved areas we call 'wilderness areas' (…) Ihave been backpacking for nearly 40 years and Iwill hopefully continue with this challenging activity for 40 years more! Many of my friends are much younger than Iam and it gives me much satisfaction to be able to have as much or more stamina for this activity than they have! When we are on these trips, we hike up peaks, catch fish, drink some whiskey around campfires and enjoy our time in the beautiful solitude. My memories of this trip were of the steep, hot hike from the desert to the cool meadow; the overall beauty of the nature, the absolute solitude of our campsite near the meadow; the strenuous hike to the top of Olancha Peak; the camaraderie of my friends; and, of course the sound of the frogs in the meadow. The frog sounds were astounding to me and Iwould listen in awe of the creature's instinctual desire to reproduce and continue the existence of their kind. Surely there were different species in the meadow for some of the frog sounds were different than others. The sounds only occurred after the Sun went down for the evening.
