Ash-free dry mass data from drift net experiments in glacial-melt streams of Fryxell Basin, McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica, during the 2022-2023 austral summer
During the 2022-2023 austral summer, 12 drift net experiments were conducted in four glacial-melt streams—Aiken Creek, Green Creek, Lost Seal Stream, and Von Guerard Stream—to quantify particulate organic matter (POM) flux from streams to downstream lakes. Streams are located in Fryxell Basin, within Taylor Valley in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica. Drift nets were deployed near the mouth of each stream and sampled every 4 to 12 hours to collect POM. Collected as part of the McMurdo Dry Valleys LTER project, these data provide insight into the temporal variability of organic material transport in polar desert ecosystems.

The B1 streamgage was removed in December 2011 due to lake level rise and sedimentation of the control. No replacement site was constructed.

As part of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project in the McMurdo Dry Valleys of Antarctica, a systematic sampling program has been undertaken to monitor the glacial meltwater streams in that region. This package contains data pertaining to continuous monitored water quality and quantity parameters measured with automatic recording devices on streams in this region. Specifically, this metadata record describes the daily hydrological summaries for the McMurdo Dry Valleys' Santa Fe Stream at the B2 streamgage, located in the Bonney Basin of Taylor Valley. Measurements commenced during the 1993-94 austral summer and continued through the end of the 1999-20 austral summer. The B2 streamgage was removed in December 2000 after it was found completely underwater due to Lake Bonney water level rise. Efforts were made to continue some discrete flow measurements to estimate flow in Santa Fe Stream based on the flow record at the higher elevation streamgage located in nearby Lawson Creek. Thus, Santa Fe Stream transitioned from being continuously monitored to one for which discrete measurements of flow may be made during site visits to Lawson Creek.

Measurements commenced during the 1990-91 austral summer and are ongoing. The Von Guerard Stream gage (at -77.608269, 163.253853) was removed on 20 Dec 2012 due to lake level rise. A new gage upstream (at -77.609210, 163.254203) has been in use since the 2012-2013 season. This dataset extends through the first half of the 2022-23 field season.

This is a summary of discharges from the stream draining Niwot Ridge Saddle to the south and is based on stage records gauged at a timber weir with a 120-degree V-notch plate installed in the fall of 2019. The weir is located approximately 380 meters SW of the Tundra Lab, and 240 meters upstream of the saddle stream weir, which was installed in 1999. It consists of average daily flow volumes in m^3. LOCATION. 40.051473782595195, -105.59131521489772 The study site is the stream draining Niwot Saddle to the south, 380 meters downstream of the source of the stream on the Niwot Saddle (near the Tundra Lab) and 240 meters upstream of the existing saddle stream weir. It is gauged at a timber weir with a 120-degree V-notch plate. TIMING. Weir was installed in the fall of 2019 by Henry Brandes and Tyler Lampard. Flow measurements began in the summer of 2020, ongoing, daily during the field season (usually from late April to early September).
