ATom: GEOS-5 Derived Meteorological Conditions and Tagged Tracers Along Flight Tracks
This dataset provides modeled meteorological conditions and tagged-CO tracer concentrations along ATom flight paths derived from the Goddard Earth Observing System Version 5 (GEOS-5) data assimilation products from the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO) at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. The GMAO "GEOS fp" forward processing system ingests satellite, ground-based, and airborne data, using a sophisticated model along with the data's statistical properties to obtain global three-dimensional data gridded fields at regular time intervals. These data are from the GMAO model output that were fitted to the ATom flight tracks by interpolating the GMAO model output to the horizontal ATom flight tracks for each of the 4 ATom Deployments. The dataset also provides tagged-CO tracer concentrations, which represent the contribution of specific regional sources to the total simulated CO. The data products produced are consistent with both the original measurements and the physical laws governing the atmosphere. To provide some meteorological context for the ATom flights, the GEOS5 gridded data are interpolated in space and time to the flight tracks.
ATom: Observed and GEOS-5 Simulated CO Concentrations with Tagged Tracers for ATom-1
This dataset contains carbon monoxide (CO) observations at 10-second intervals from flights during the ATom-1 campaign in 2016 and simulated CO concentrations from the Goddard Earth Observing System version 5 (GEOS-5) model for the corresponding locations along the ATom flight tracks. The Atmospheric Tomography Mission (ATom) is a NASA Earth Venture Suborbital-2 mission studying the impact of human-produced air pollution on greenhouse gases and on chemically reactive gases in the atmosphere. The airborne observations were collected using the Quantum Cascade Laser System (QCLS) instrument, a high-frequency laser spectroscopy instrument for in situ atmospheric gas sampling. This dataset provides a direct comparison of observational and simulated CO that will be used to inform future atmospheric modeling experiments. The dataset also contains simulated tagged-CO tracer concentrations, which represent the contribution of specific regional sources to the total simulated CO. This dataset contributes to one of the ATom mission objectives to create an observation-based chemical climatology of important atmospheric constituents and their reactivity in the remote troposphere.

Data from: Blood tracer kinetics in the arterial tree
Evaluation of blood supply of different organs relies on labeling blood with a suitable tracer. The tracer kinetics is linear: Tracer concentration at an observation site is a linear response to an input somewhere upstream the arterial flow. The corresponding impulse response functions are currently treated empirically without incorporating the relation to the vascular morphology of an organ. In this work we address this relation for the first time. We demonstrate that the form of the response function in the entire arterial tree is reduced to that of individual vessel segments under approximation of good blood mixing at vessel bifurcations. The resulting expression simplifies significantly when the geometric scaling of the vascular tree is taken into account. This suggests a new way to access the vascular morphology in vivo using experimentally determined response functions. However, it is an ill-posed inverse problem as demonstrated by an example using measured arterial spin labeling in large brain arteries. We further analyze transport in individual vessel segments and demonstrate that experimentally accessible tracer concentration in vessel segments depends on the measurement principle. Explicit expressions for the response functions are obtained for the major middle part of the arterial tree in which the blood flow in individual vessel segments can be treated as laminar. When applied to the analysis of regional cerebral blood flow measurements for which the necessary arterial input is evaluated in the carotid arteries, present theory predicts about 20% underestimation, which is in agreement with recent experimental data.

<p>The application of isotopic tracers and the subsequent analysis of nitrogen isotope ratios are commonly used to track the spatial and temporal fate of nutrients in both aquatic and terrestrial systems. A substantial amount of work has been completed to determine the nitrogen (N) removal capacity of agricultural, municipal wastewater, and storm water treatment wetlands. However, the fate of N enrichment on varying marsh systems is still not completely understood or predictable. To evaluate relationships between nutrients and plant responses, biogeochemical processes, and nutrient retention and export across varying ecotomes, a full factorial nutrient and sediment field study was implemented in early May 2019, consisting of three different marshes either dominated by <em>Sagittaria</em> <em>lancifolia</em>, <em>Spartina</em> <em>patens</em>, or <em>Schoenoplectus</em> <em>americanus</em>. Each system was labeled with the stable isotope Nitrogen-15 (N<sup>15</sup>) early in the growing season (June 15, 2019) by injecting calcium nitrate (10 atom % N<sup>15</sup>) in three installments once per day at mid-tide so as to limit loss of the tracer downward through percolation. A total of 250 mL of label was injected at 10 cm depth for a total of 1.2 g N<sup>15</sup> per plot. Data collection occurred on day 5, 15, and 30 following last injection, consisting of species richness and abundance, aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, and soil. Plant tissues and soil were examined to determine the processing and fate of dissolved NO<sub>3</sub>- in these plant communities.</p>
