Intra‐season variations in distribution and abundance of humpback whales in the West Antarctic Peninsula using cruise vessels as opportunistic platforms
<p class="MsoNormal"><span>Following the near collapse of several whale populations in the Southern Ocean, some baleen whale stocks are on the rise again. Combined with the recent increase in fishery of Antarctic Krill (Euphausiia superba) around the Western Antarctic Peninsula (WAP) there is a growing need to quantify several aspects of some of these whale species in this area. In this study we use data collected from tourist vessels performing several trips during the Austral summer to quantify the beginning of the foraging season for Antarctic Humpback whales, estimate abundance, as well as use predictive habitat model to identify potential areas for interaction between this species and fishing vessels. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span>The following dataset includes the GPS track of both vessels and all marine mammal and seabird observations collected on two ships between late November 2019 and mid-January 2020. These data were gathered following standard Distance Sampling protocols, recorded in Logger2010 software </span>(<a href="http://www.marineconservationresearch.co.uk/downloads/logger-2000-rainbowclick-software-downloads/">http://www.marineconservationresearch.co.uk/downloads/logger-2000-rainbowclick-software-downloads/</a>), stored in MS Access database files and subset in .RData files for analysis.</p>
Data from: Addressing controversies in the xylem embolism resistance – vessel diameter relationship
<ol> <li class="MsoNormal">Although xylem embolism is a key process during drought-induced tree mortality, its relationship to wood anatomy remains debated. While the functional link between bordered pits and embolism resistance is known, there is no direct, mechanistic explanation for the traditional assumption that wider vessels are more vulnerable than narrow ones.</li> <li class="MsoNormal">We used data from 20 temperate broad-leaved tree species to study the inter- and intraspecific relationship of water potential at 50% loss of conductivity (<em>P</em><sub>50</sub>) with hydraulically-weighted vessel diameter (<em>D</em><sub>h</sub>) and tested its link to pit membrane thickness (<em>T</em><sub>PM</sub>) and specific conductivity (<em>K</em><sub>s</sub>) on species level.</li> <li class="MsoNormal">Embolism-resistant species had thick pit membranes and narrow vessels. While <em>D</em><sub>h</sub> was weakly associated with <em>T</em><sub>PM</sub>, the <em>P</em><sub>50</sub> – <em>D</em><sub>h</sub> relationship remained highly significant after accounting for <em>T</em><sub>PM</sub>. The interspecific pattern between <em>P</em><sub>50</sub> and <em>D</em><sub>h</sub> was mirrored by a link between <em>P</em><sub>50</sub> and <em>K</em><sub>s</sub>, but there was no evidence for an intraspecific relationship.</li> <li class="MsoNormal">Our results provide robust evidence for an interspecific <em>P</em><sub>50</sub> – <em>D</em><sub>h</sub> relationship across our species. As a potential cause for the inconsistencies in published <em>P</em><sub>50</sub> – <em>D</em><sub>h</sub> relationships, our analysis suggests differences in the range of traits values covered, and the level of data aggregation (species, tree, or sample level) studied.</li> </ol>
Data from: Sampling from commercial vessel routes can capture marine biodiversity distributions effectively
<p>Collecting fine-scale occurrence data for marine species across large spatial scales is logistically challenging but is important to determine species distributions and for conservation planning. Inaccurate descriptions of species ranges could result in designating protected areas with inappropriate locations or boundaries. Optimising sampling strategies, therefore, is a priority for scaling up survey approaches using tools such as environmental DNA (eDNA) to capture species distributions. In a marine context, commercial vessels, such as ferries, could provide sampling platforms allowing access to under-sampled areas and repeatable sampling over time to track community changes. However, sample collection from commercial vessels could be biased and may not represent biological and environmental variability. Here, we evaluate whether sampling along Mediterranean ferry routes can yield unbiased biodiversity survey outcomes, based on perfect knowledge from a stacked species distribution model (SSDM) of marine megafauna from online data repositories. Simulations to allocate sampling point locations were carried out representing different sampling strategies (random vs regular), frames (ferry routes vs unconstrained) and number of sampling points. SSDMs were remade from different sampling simulations and compared to the 'perfect knowledge' SSDM to quantify the bias associated with different sampling strategies. Ferry routes detected more species and were able to recover known patterns in species richness at smaller sample sizes better than unconstrained sampling points. However, to minimise potential bias, ferry routes should be chosen to cover the variability in species composition and its environmental predictors in the SSDMs. The workflow presented here can be used to design effective sampling strategies using commercial vessel routes globally, including for eDNA analyses. This approach has potential to provide a cost-effective method to access remote oceanic areas on a regular basis and can recover meaningful data on spatiotemporal biodiversity patterns.</p>

Data from: Monitoring temporal and spatial trends of illegal and legal fishing in Canada's marine conservation areas using vessel tracking datasets
<p>Expansion of marine conservation areas (CA) necessitates resource-efficient and achievable strategies for monitoring and evaluation of ongoing fishing activity at national levels. To demonstrate and explore such a strategy, we conducted the first extensive analysis of fishing activity within Canada's static, geographically defined marine CAs with fishing regulations (n = 264 areas). We used eight years of Automatic Identification System data to estimate fishing effort across three oceans and conducted temporal and spatial comparisons specific to each CA's regulations and enactment date. We addressed questions on CA effectiveness, fishing displacement, fishing the line behavior, and relationships between fishing activity and spatial CA attributes. We estimated 22,000 hours of fishing activity within CAs after enactments, 22% of which was identified as illegal. CA effectiveness appeared to be lowest for Atlantic CAs based on illegal fishing effort density within CAs. Fishing displacement and fishing the line was generally not apparent as buffer areas around CAs tended to already have higher fishing effort prior to enactments. CA effectiveness and responses to CAs varied considerably, as was visualized using timeseries plots and maps developed for each CA. Our evaluation of a nation's full suite of CAs provides managers with a foundation and approach for continued monitoring and reporting.</p>
Vessel traffic observations and associated waterbird surveys, March 2020 – February 2021, Roberts Point and Ogden Point, Victoria, BC, Canada
<p>The coastal waters of southern British Columbia, Canada, encompass habitat of international conservation significance to coastal and marine birds, including sizeable areas designated in the early 1900s as Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (MBS) to protect overwintering waterfowl from hunting near urban centres. Two of these, Shoal Harbour (SHMBS) and Victoria Harbour (VHMBS), have seen significant marine infrastructure development in recent decades and experience considerable vessel traffic. We conducted a pilot study using shore-based observers to develop small-vessel baselines for the winter months when regional waterbird numbers are highest. During our surveys, we recorded considerable inter-site variability in vessel traffic characteristics, with one site (SHMBS) a source of nearly twice as many vessels in total as the other (VHMBS). For waterbirds, hourly 3-minute 'snapshot' surveys, combined with daily tallies of incidental observations, showed that community composition also varied by locality, with one site dominated by gulls (Laridae), cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), and seaducks (Tribe Mergini), and the other by gulls, cormorants, and alcids (Alcidae). Our results demonstrate that fine-scale local variability must be taken into account when managing for vessel traffic disturbance of waterbirds, particularly at sites of high human population density and increasing coastal development. Vessel noise exposures of harbour seals from the Wadden Sea
<p>The North Sea faces intense ship traffic owing to increasing human activities at sea. As harbour seals (<em>Phoca vitulina</em>) are abundant top predators in the North Sea, it is hypothesised that they experience repeated, high-amplitude vessel exposures. Here, we test this hypothesis by quantifying vessel noise exposures from deployments of long-term sound and movement tags (DTAGs) on nine harbour seals from the Wadden Sea. An automated tool was developed to detect intervals of elevated noise in the sound recordings. An assessment by multiple raters was performed to classify the source as either vessels or other sounds. A total of 133 vessel passes were identified with received levels >97 dB re 1µPa RMS in the 2 kHz decidecade band and with ambient noise >6 dB below this detection threshold. Tagged seals spent most of their time within Marine Protected Areas (89 ± 13%, mean ± SD) and were exposed to high-amplitude vessel passes 4.3 ± 1.6 times per day. Only 32% of vessel passes were plausibly associated with an AIS-registered vessel. We conclude that seals in industrialized waters are exposed repeatedly to vessel noise, even in areas designated as protected, and that exposures are poorly predicted by AIS data.</p>
Data for: Small reductions in cargo vessel speed dramatically reduce noise impacts to marine mammals
<p><span>Global reductions in the underwater radiated noise levels from cargo vessels are needed to reduce increasing cumulative impacts to marine wildlife. We use a vessel exposure simulation model to examine how reducing vessel source levels through slowdowns and technological modifications can lessen impacts on marine mammals. We show that the area exposed to ship noise reduces dramatically with moderate source level reductions that can be readily achieved with small reductions in speed. Moreover, slowdowns reduce all impacts to marine mammals despite the longer time that a slower vessel takes to pass an animal. We conclude that cumulative noise impacts from the global fleet can be reduced immediately by slowdowns. This solution requires no modification to ships and is scalable – from local speed reductions in sensitive areas to ocean basins. Speed reductions can be supplemented by routing vessels away from critical habitats and by technological modifications to reduce vessel noise.</span></p>
The catches of different lamps using on the falling-net fishing vessels in South China Sea
<p><span>Falling nets are a type of fishing gear that appeared and developed rapidly in the northern of South China Sea in the early 1990s. We have developed Light-emitting diode (LED) fishing lamps to replace metal halide (MH) lamps that reduce fuel consumption without reducing the catches. We conducted marine light-fishing experiments in the northern South China Sea from September 20 to 26, 2019, and August 29 to 31, 2021. The results in the first fishing experiment show that there is no significant change in catch of the falling-net fishing vessel when the white LED lamps (with a total power of 36 kW) were used instead of MH lamps (with a total power of 120 kW). Squid catches of the falling-net fishing vessel increased significantly when white LED lamps (with a total power of 36 kW) and cyan LED lamps (with a total power of 6.0 kW) were used. The results in the second fishing experiment show that the total weight of catches of the cyan LED fishing lamps is more than that of the white LED fishing lamps, and the cyan LED light can attract <em>Penaeus merguiensis</em> and <em>Thryssa dussumieri</em> more effectively than the white LED light.</span></p>
PI3K block restores age-dependent neurovascular coupling defects associated with cerebral small vessel disease
<p class="MsoNormal">Neurovascular coupling (NVC), a vital physiological process that rapidly and precisely directs localized blood flow to the most active regions of the brain, is accomplished in part by the vast network of cerebral capillaries acting as a sensory web capable of detecting increases in neuronal activity and orchestrating the dilation of upstream parenchymal arterioles. Here, we report a <em>Col4a1</em> mutant mouse model of cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) with age-dependent defects in capillary-to-arteriole dilation, functional hyperemia in the brain, and memory. The fundamental defect in aged mutant animals was the depletion of the minor membrane phospholipid phosphatidylinositol 4,5 bisphosphate (PIP<sub>2</sub>) in brain capillary endothelial cells, leading to the loss of inwardly rectifier K<sup>+</sup> (Kir2.1) channel activity. Blocking phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K), an enzyme that diminishes the bioavailability of PIP<sub>2</sub> by converting it to phosphatidylinositol (3,4,5)-trisphosphate (PIP<sub>3</sub>), restored Kir2.1 channel activity, capillary-to-arteriole dilation, and functional hyperemia. In longitudinal studies, chronic PI3K inhibition also improved the memory function of aged <em>Col4a1</em> mutant mice. Our data suggest that PI3K inhibition is a viable therapeutic strategy for treating defective NVC and cognitive impairment associated with cSVD.</p>
RVD: A Handheld Device-Based Fundus Video Dataset for Retinal Vessel Segmentation
<p>We introduce the first video-based <strong>retinal vessel dataset (RVD)</strong>, a collection of 635 smartphone-based videos with detailed vessel annotation. All captured videos have a frame rate of 25 frames per second, with the duration varying between 2 to 30 seconds. The total number of frames in our dataset is over 130,000. These videos are recorded from four clinics, including patients from 50 to 75 years old. More specifically, 264 males and 151 females are included in the collection process.</p> <p>The annotations provided in our dataset span two dimensions: spatial and temporal. In the spatial dimension, we offer three distinct levels of annotations: binary vessel masks, general vein-artery masks, and fine-grained vein-artery masks. Each kind of annotation is tailored to specific clinical purposes. In the temporal dimension, we focus on the optic disk regions of videos where the retinal vessel fluctuation normally occurs.
