Dataset: Location- and feature-based selection histories make independent, qualitatively distinct contributions to urgent visuomotor performance

<p>This dataset (packaged as the zip file history_share.zip) accompanies the article titled "Location- and feature-based selection histories make independent, qualitatively distinct contributions to urgent visuomotor performance" by EE Oor, E Salinas, and TR Stanford which is available as a preprint in bioRxiv. The experimental results in the article are based on behavioral data collected from 2 monkey subjects during performance of a visuomotor task (the compelled oddball task), as described in the text. This dataset contains the trial-by-trial behavioral results collected for each subject and upon which all subsequent analyses were based.</p> <p>In addition to the trial-wise data arrays (stored in the files dataC.csv, dataN.csv, and dataCN.csv), the package includes Matlab functions and scripts (*.m files) used to analyze the data and recreate the results and figures in the article. Instructions and specifics are detailed in the README file. &nbsp;</p>

Enmeshed with a Sand. History of the Slave Trade in Eastern Africa on Indian Ocean

<p>The short documentary &ldquo;Enmeshed with a Sand. History of the Slave Trade in Eastern Africa on the Indian Ocean&rdquo;, directed by Aleksandra Lukaszewicz, with interviews recorded by Grzegorz Skorny is the artistic result of the research conducted within TPAAE and CAPHE EU-funded research project.</p> <p>Lukaszewicz and Skorny followed Kaviha Charro Chengo to the far end of Kilifi Creek to set off for the journey of uncovering the traces and narratives of the slave trade in the coastal region of Kenya.</p> <p>Creeks on the Eastern African coast provided an important venue for getting the slaves because, with a high tide, it was possible to get deep into the land. In such activities usually participated apart of few Arabs, middlemen who better understood the environment around them and protected themselves in such a way from becoming slaves themselves.</p> <p>The live memory narratives from the paths leading from Mtzanganyuiko, Kibokoni, Mnarani, Takaungu, Vuma Cliffs, Jumba la Mtwana, Fort Jesus, Shimoni to Zanzibar which we traced with Skorny and later also with Klaudyna Szymanska, should be supported by the objective scientific research.</p> <p>This was achieved by the expert presentation in the documentary of Dr. Ibrahim Busolo Namunaba and by including archival materials: photographs of museum objects, graphics, and maps of the region, which were contributed to the realization of the documentary by the National Museums of Kenyan in Nairobi and the National Museum in Szczecin. Maps were redrawn and animated by the Miastopracownia &ndash; Barbara Nawrocka and Dominika Wilczynska; the soundtrack was contributed by the Polish Society for Aesthetics and Mr. Barissa with students from Kenyatta University. The educational consultancy for the film is owned by Prof. Elzbieta Perzycka and Michal Parchimowicz from the Polish University Abroad in London.</p> <p>Recognition of difficult parts of one&rsquo;s history brings reconciliation to the old pain and allows to find &ndash; according to the words of Mrs. Karembo from Kilfi County, Department of Gender, Culture and Social Services &ndash; &ldquo;a hidden blessing&rdquo;. Perceiving the slaves&rsquo; trade in a broader picture of general historical, social, and economic transformations gives back this story of its owners, to the community.</p>

Quasar dataset: Chronicling the Reionization History at 6 < z < 7 with Emergent Quasar Damping Wings

<p>This is the quasar dataset used in <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2024arXiv240110328D/abstract">Ďurovč&iacute;kov&aacute; et al. (2024)</a>. Please cite the corresponding paper (https://doi.org/10.3847/1538-4357/ad4888) and the DOI of this dataset (10.5281/zenodo.11402934) if you use this data.</p> <p>This dataset was primarily collected using the FIRE spectrograph on the Magellan telescope, J1030+0524, J159-02, and J1120+0641 are combined Magellan/FIRE and VLT/X-shooter spectra, and J1148+5251 is a Keck/MOSFIRE and Keck/ESI spectrum. We publish the reduced spectral files along with the smoothed spectral fits and the mean continuum predictions computed in this paper. Refer to Table 3 in <a href="https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/2024arXiv240110328D/abstract">Ďurovč&iacute;kov&aacute; et al. (2024)</a> for a description of the FITS file extensions.</p>

Data and original code for: Explaining the diversity of optical effects in Christmas beetles: climate, history, and mechanisms

<p><span>Beetles exhibit an extraordinary diversity of brilliant and colourful appearances. The mechanisms producing these optical effects have received some attention, but we know little about the ecological variables driving their evolution. Here we investigated environmental correlates of reflectivity and circular polarization produced by a combination of pigments and structures in optically diverse Christmas beetles (Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae). We quantified the optical properties of 261 specimens representing 46 species using spectrophotometry and calibrated photographs. Then, we examined associations between these properties and environmental variables such as temperature, humidity, and vegetation cover, controlling for body size and phylogenetic relatedness. Our results showed that larger beetles have higher reflectivity and occur in drier environments. Unexpectedly, near-infrared (NIR) reflectivity was not correlated with ecological variables. We observed no universal ecogeographical pattern for polarization but identified trade-offs with other optical properties: beetles without polarization-associated nanostructures had higher NIR reflectivity. Visible reflectivity seems less affected by nanostructures and is instead negatively correlated with the accumulation of pigments such as melanin. Our study highlights the value of a macroecological approach for testing alternative hypotheses to explain the diversity of optical effects in beetles and to understand the link between structure and function.</span></p>
