Morphometric measures from birds in the Serra do Cipó National Park (1999-2009), Minas Gerais, Brazil
Morphometric data of 111 bird species, and 1732 individuals, captured in mist nets over a period of 10 years, from February 1999 to October 2009, were presented. The captures were made in the locality of 'Lagoa das Capivaras', inserted in the Serra do Cipó National Park (-19.346023, -43.609918). The capture with misty nets consisted of the use of bird capture nets of 12, nine, and six meters in length by three meters in height. The captured birds were identified at the species level, with the aid of guides and identification keys, and marked with numbered metal rings provided by CEMAVE - Centro de Pesquisas para Conservação das Aves Silvestres. Capture sessions were carried out by placing two to 20 nets in different locations throughout the area, remaining open throughout the morning, for several days and months over the years mentioned. All individuals were listed following the nomenclature and classification suggested by the Brazilian Committee for Ornithological Records. Biometric data of each individual were measured regarding body mass, wing length tarsus, the beak (height, length, and width), occiput (occipital region to nasofrontal suture), and total length. For this, calipers, rulers, and dynamometers with a precision of 0.1 g were used for small birds (such as those of the family Trochilidae), 1 g for medium birds, and 10 g for birds over 100 g. In addition to the age classification: juvenile (J), adult (A), and indeterminate (I); and sex: male (M), female (F), and indeterminate (I). Bird's morphometric is important data to support a variety of studies, especially those of taxonomy, physiology, ecology, and evolutionary implications of a particular species.
Seagrass growth rates and physical characteristics and measures of water temperature and salinity during a simulated green turtle grazing experiment in The Bahamas, 1999 – 2000.
This data set contains data from an experiment in which green turtle grazing was simulated in a Thalassia testudinum seagrass meadow in The Bahamas from July 1999 until December 2000. Measurements of water temperature and salinity were collected weekly. Seagrass meadow physical characteristics--blade length, blade width, number of blades per shoot, shoot density, and leaf area index--along with growth rates (both linear growth and production) were measured at various temporal intervals. Measurements were made in each of three treatments: 1) an unclipped reference treatment (representing ungrazed seagrass) in which measurements began in July 1999, 2) an experimentally clipped treatment (representing grazing) in which measurements began in July 1999, and 3) an experimentally clipped treatment (representing grazing) in which measurements began in February 2000. Data were used to investigate relationships between water temperature and salinity on seagrass growth and physical characteristics and how these relationships are affected by green turtle grazing.
Hydrologic Field Measurements in Yahara River Watershed
These data are collected to support the Water Sustainability and Climate of the Yahara River Watershed Project. Hydrologic measurements include soil moisture, soil temperature, soil water potential, depth-to-groundwater-level, and water table elevation. They come from several different land cover types that are representative of the major categories within the Yahara River watershed of south-central Wisconsin. These types include forest, grassland, wetland, urban turfgrass-medium density, urban turfgrass-low density, and corn (WIBU sites). These data are being collected to observe differences in how water and energy are processed under different land cover types and to create calibration datasets for a separate project goal of creating a agro-biophysical model of the entire Yahara River watershed.
Denitrification losses in response to N fertiliser rates - integrating high temporal resolution N2O, in-situ 15N2O and 15N2 measurements and fertiliser 15N recoveries in intensive sugarcane systems
Denitrification is a key process in the global nitrogen (N) cycle, causing both nitrous oxide (N2O) and dinitrogen (N2) emissions. However, estimates of seasonal denitrification losses (N2O+N2) are scarce, reflecting methodological difficulties in measuring soil-borne N2 emissions against the high atmospheric N2 background and challenges regarding their spatio-temporal upscaling. This study investigated N2O+N2 losses in response to N fertiliser rates (0, 100, 150, 200 and 250 kg N ha-1) on two intensively managed tropical sugarcane farms in Australia, by combining automated N2O monitoring, in-situ N2 and N2O measurements using the 15N gas flux method and fertiliser 15N recoveries at harvest. Dynamic changes in the N2O/(N2O+N2) ratio (< 0.01 to 0.768) were explained by fitting generalised additive mixed models (GAMMs) with soil factors to upscale high temporal-resolution N2O data to daily N2 emissions over the season. Cumulative N2O+N2 losses ranged from 12 to 87 kg N ha-1, increasing non-linearly with increasing N fertiliser rates. Emissions of N2O+N2 accounted for 31–78% of fertiliser 15N losses and were dominated by environmentally benign N2 emissions. The contribution of denitrification to N fertiliser loss decreased with increasing N rates, suggesting increasing significance of other N loss pathways including leaching and runoff at higher N rates. This study delivers a blueprint approach to extrapolate denitrification measurements at both temporal and spatial scales, which can be applied in fertilised agroecosystems. Robust estimates of denitrification losses determined using this method will help to improve cropping system modelling approaches, advancing our understanding of the N cycle across scales.
NH and ME Landsat chlorophyll-a retrieval algorithms and in situ measurements 2000 (Landsat 7), 2013-2015 (Landsat 8)
Predicting algal blooms has become a priority for scientists, municipalities, businesses, and citizens. Remote sensing offers solutions to the spatial and temporal challenges facing existing lake research and monitoring programs that rely primarily on high-investment, in situ measurements. Techniques to remotely measure chlorophyll-a (chl-a) as a proxy for algal biomass have been limited to specific large water bodies in particular seasons and narrow chl-a ranges. Thus, a first step toward prediction of algal blooms is generating regionally robust algorithms using in situ and remote sensing data. This study explores the relationship between in-lake measured chl-a data from Maine and New Hampshire lakes and remotely-sensed chl-a retrieval algorithm outputs. Landsat 8 images were obtained and then processed after required atmospheric and radiometric corrections. Six previously developed algorithms were tested on a regional scale on eleven scenes from 2013-2015 covering 192 lakes. Individual tree height and diameter measurements of Birch spp. in central Sweden (2005 - 2022)
The spacing trial in Skräddarbo was established in 1989 on former agricultural land, testing four square spacing configurations: 1.3 × 1.3 m, 1.5 × 1.5 m, 1.8 × 1.8 m, and 2.6 × 2.6 m. Each spacing treatment was replicated four times for both silver birch and downy birch, totaling 32 plots across approximately 1.2 hectares. Each plot was planted with 100 seedlings, with varying plot sizes based on spacing. Species were randomly assigned to pre-determined plot locations. Data collection began in 2005 and continued annually until 2022 (except 2021). The data includes individual tree height, diameter and living crown measurements. Diameter measurements were recorded cross-sectionally, using a digital caliper, whereas tree height and living crown measurements were done using a hypsometer (Haglöf Vertex Laser Geo). Additional variables include plot area, tree id numbers and other constant variables. The data package is complete with the last revision done by the author in 2022.
Laboratory measurements of nitrous oxide production rates in agricultural soils from Lancaster, PA, estuarine sediments from the Scheldt Estuary Belgium/Netherlands, and estuarine soils from the Delaware River NJ under gradients of physicochemical perturbation
A set of experiments was performed to test 1) how various physicochemical perturbations (salinity, zinc, temperature, soil moisture, and pH) influenced denitrification and nitrous oxide production on short timescales (<1 day) in agricultural soils from Lancaster, PA, USA, 2) how variation in a single parameter (salinity) influenced rates of denitrification and nitrous oxide production in sediments that experience a range in that parameter (tidal freshwater, oligohaline, and mesohaline estuarine sediments from the Scheldt River estuary Belgium/Netherlands) on short timescales (< 1 day), and 3) how denitrification and nitrous oxide production along with key functional gene expression in tidal freshwater estuarine soils from the Delaware River, NJ, USA responded to a long-term (6 month) change in a single parameter (salinity) in a press experiment with subsequent short-term (< 1 day) pulses. In the final long-term experiment, nitrite reductase (nirS) and nitrous oxide reductase (nosZ) gene expression were also measured at three timepoints (days 7, 35, and 110).
