Biodiversity and metacommunity structure of rocky intertidal invertebrates in some coastal ecosystems in Puerto Rico

The goals of this study were to determine the relative importance of environmental (wave power density, wave height) and habitat (e.g., algal cover, slope, complexity of rock surfaces) factors associated with the structure of local assemblages at multiple shore heights and the regional metacommunity of mobile invertebrates on oceanic rocky intertidal habitats. These characteristics and abundances of 41 species of invertebrate were estimated at 10 plots at each of three tidal heights at each of ten sites on the shoreline of Puerto Rico. Data to accompany "Exploring the Complexity of Ocean Acidification: An Ecosystem Comparison of Coastal pH Variability"

The goal of this project was to create a science lesson at the middle school level with data illustrating the variablilty of pH and temperature in nature. The lesson allows students to interpret pH data and gain knowledge of abiotic and biotic processes that contribute to pH differences between tropical, temperate and polar marine ecosystems. Students use what they have learned to interpret data from a 'mystery' site and develop a hypothesis as to which ecosystem the unknown data was collected from. The full cirriculum is described in Kapsenberg, L, AL Kelley, LA Francis, and SB Raskin (2015) Exploring the complexity of ocean acidification: an ecosystem comparison of coastal pH variability. Science Scope 39(3): 51-60. doi: 10.2505/4/ss15_039_03_51 This dataset contains an Excel workbook with five worksheets: A "Readme" tab with citations for additional reading and data attribution.Three time-series of pH and temperature from coastal locations: a temperate kelp forest in the Santa Barbara Channel (Spring season, 2 months, 20 min interval). a coral reef near the island of Moorea, Tahiti (Summer season, 3 weeks, 30 min interval), and the polar ocean of Cape Evans, McMurdo Bay, Antarctica (Spring/Summer, 6 months, bi-hourly interval). A fourth worksheet contains data for a "mystery site" for student examination. Data for the study were contributed by the Santa Barbara Coastal LTER, Moorea Coral Reef LTER and the G. Hofmann lab (University of California, Santa Barbara). Additional pH data are available from both LTER sites. Antarctic data in this dataset are also available from NSF's Biological and Chemical Oceanographic Data Management Office (see Cape Evans Mooring, 2012).

Water samples were collected from the surface and the bottom of the water column at ten GCE-LTER sampling sites and from the surface of the water column during a low water transect along the Altamaha River in November 2001, March 2002, June 2002, September 2002, December 2002, and March 2003 . Samples were taken at various times of day and under various tidal conditions. The particulate matter was separated by filtration and analyzed for chlorophyll and phaeopigment content by flourometric analysis. Daily Anomalies and High Productivity Zone Mask for Northern Peruvian Coastal Marine Ecosystem during the 2017 Coastal El Niño (December 2016 - May 2017)

<p>This dataset is part of the manuscript entitled "Chlorophyll Response and High Productivity Zone Contraction in Northern Per&uacute; During the 2017 Coastal El Ni&ntilde;o."</p> <p>The dataset is designed to assess the atmospheric and oceanographic drivers of productivity changes during the 2017 Coastal El Ni&ntilde;o. It allows detailed analysis of the interactions between physical processes (e.g., wind-driven upwelling rates, heat flux changes) and biological responses (e.g., chlorophyll concentration variations) in a region highly susceptible to ENSO-related variability. This comprehensive dataset provides valuable insight into the physical-biological coupling and the impacts of rapid climate events on marine ecosystems. The dataset, covering the period from December 1, 2016, to May 31, 2017, includes:</p> <p>1. Chlorophyll-a&nbsp; Anomalies (chla): Represents deviations in surface chlorophyll concentrations, a proxy for phytoplankton biomass, highlighting variations in primary productivity during the event.</p> <p>2. Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (sst): Captures changes in sea surface temperatures relative to the climatological mean, providing insight into the warming pattern typical of marine heatwaves associated with the Coastal El Ni&ntilde;o.</p> <p>3. Sea Level Anomaly (sla): Indicates changes in sea surface height, which reflects thermal expansion of water masses and potential contributions from coastal trapped waves propagating along the Peruvian coast.</p> <p>4. Wind Component Anomalies (u,v): Daily anomalies for both zonal (east-west) and meridional (north-south) wind components, which are critical for understanding changes in wind patterns including upwelling and Ekman transport processes.</p> <p>5. Ekman Pumping Anomalies (w): Represents variations in vertical water movement forced by wind stress curl, highlighting the suppression or enhancement of upwelling during the event.</p> <p>6. Latent Heat Flux Anomalies (lathf): Indicates deviations in heat loss from the ocean surface due to evaporation, affecting surface temperature regulation.</p> <p>7. Shortwave Radiation Anomalies (swrad): Shows changes in solar radiation (and also a proxy for PAR) reaching the ocean surface, influencing upper ocean heat content and the light availability for phytoplankton.</p> <p>8. High Productivity Zone (mask): A binary mask with daily values of 1 indicating areas meeting the HPZ criterion and 0 otherwise, allowing for spatial tracking of the HPZ's extent during the period of study.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Experimental addition of marine-derived nutrients affects wildflower traits in a coastal meta-ecosystem

<p>Organismal movement can bring individuals, resources, and novel interactions across ecosystem boundaries and into recipient habitats, thereby forming meta-ecosystems. For example, Pacific salmon ecosystems receive large marine-derived nitrogen subsidies during annual spawning events, which can have a wide range of effects on aquatic and terrestrial plant species and communities. In this study, we evaluate the effects of cross-ecosystem nutrient subsidies on terrestrial plant growth and reproduction. We conducted a large-scale field experiment with four treatments: (1) addition of a pink salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus</em> <em>gorbuscha</em>) carcass, (2) addition of the drift seaweed rockweed (<em>Fucus</em> <em>distichus</em>), (3) addition of both salmon + rockweed, and (4) a control. We examined treatment effects on leaf nitrogen and fitness-associated floral traits in four common estuarine wildflower species. We found elevated leaf ∂<sup>15</sup>N in all plant species and all sampling years in treatments with salmon carcass additions but did not observe any differences in leaf percent nitrogen. We also observed larger leaf area in two species, a context-dependent increase in floral display area in two species, and a limited increase in plant seed set in response to both salmon carcass treatments. In sum, our study suggests that marine nutrients can affect terrestrial plant growth and reproduction.</p>

Sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) decrease nymphal infection prevalence for tick-borne pathogens Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum in a coastal dune ecosystem

<p>1. Understanding which factors determine tick-borne disease hazard can contribute to effective disease control. In Europe, the hazard of the pathogens <em>Borrelia burgdorferi</em> s.l. and <em>Anaplasma phagocytophilum</em> is determined by local tick densities (mainly <em>Ixodes ricinus</em>) and the reservoir competence of the host species community. Sand lizards (<em>Lacerta agilis</em>) are common hosts for larvae and nymphs of <em>I. ricinus</em> and non-competent reservoirs for both pathogens. Consequently, high relative abundance of <em>L. agilis</em> is hypothesized to be associated with lower infection prevalence in nymphs. Here, we aimed to test whether this effectively occurs in natural settings.</p> <p>2. We sampled different habitat types within a heterogenous dune landscape at the Dutch coast and estimated 1) <em>L. agilis</em> densities, 2) host community competence, 3) the density and infection prevalence of questing<em> I. ricinus</em> ticks, and 4) the number and infection prevalence of ticks feeding on <em>L. agilis</em>.</p> <p>3. Captured <em>L. agilis</em> had high tick burdens and contributed substantially to feeding <em>I. ricinus</em> larvae in their natural habitat. <em>B. burgdorferi</em> s.l. and <em>A. phagocytophilum</em> were virtually absent from feeding larvae and nymphs.</p> <p>4. The nymphal infection prevalence of both pathogens in questing ticks was lower in habitat types where <em>L. agilis</em> was more abundant. Hence, <em>L. agilis</em> strongly reduced community competence.</p> <p>5. The density of questing nymphs was higher in habitat types with denser vegetation and also varied more between habitat types than infection prevalence. As a result, nymphal density had a stronger effect on the density of infected ticks than did nymphal infection prevalence.</p> <p>6. Synthesis and applications. Coastal dune habitats favourable for <em>L. agilis</em> have lower densities of questing nymphs, and a lower human infection hazard. These results might be applicable to similar ecosystems where <em>L. agilis</em> is present. From a public health perspective, this underlines the importance of preserving early successional habitat, as encroaching shrubs are associated with higher tick-borne disease hazard, and vegetation removal might be a solution to reduce hazard in coastal dunes. The high degree of spatial heterogeneity in the abundance of tick-borne pathogens also poses opportunities to manage recreational activities to limit human exposure to tick-borne diseases.</p>

Multidecadal Time Series of Measured Chlorophyll-a in Lakes and Estuarine-Coastal Ecosystems, 1966-2024

The photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll-a is a commonly measured index of phytoplankton biomass and water quality across all aquatic ecosystem types. Some monitoring and research programs have sustained chlorophyll-a measurements for decades at monthly or higher frequency. Each of these time series is an invaluable record of phytoplankton variability at a particular location. The patterns of that variability have been essential for identifying the underlying processes of phytoplankton change at time scales of days, months, seasons, years and decades. Multidecadal series are rare and valuable because they provide empirical records of phytoplankton changes over the recent decades of unprecedented global change. These records also provide an empirical basis for comparing patterns and rates of change across geographic regions and ecosystem types. This data package contains multidecadal time series of measured chlorophyll-a concentration in three ecosystem types: 134 freshwater lakes (including a small number of reservoirs) that do not freeze; 78 high latitude lakes that do freeze; and 176 coastal ecosystems defined as water bodies where freshwater and seawater mix, including estuaries, coastal bays and lagoons, tidal rivers, and the Baltic Sea. Although there are other published compilations of chlorophyll-a time series, this package was compiled specifically to report observations made at monthly or higher frequency and sustained over multiple decades. The mean time series duration in this package is 33 years, and the mean number of sampling dates per site was 503 (range 186 to 2381). Thus, this data package provides an empirical basis for analyses to measure and compare decadal-scale patterns and rates of phytoplankton biomass variability between inland lakes and water bodies at the land-ocean interface.
