Testing the relative importance of local resources and landscape connectivity on Bombus impatiens (Hymenoptera, Apidae) colonies

Bee populations are decreasing worldwide. The underlying causes are likely determined by factors at different scales. We tested the relative importance of local resources and landscape connectivity on 64 bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) colonies in experimentally isolated and connected habitat fragments. We used colony mass, no. of workers, and no. of gynes to estimate colony performance. Landscape connectivity did not significantly affect colony performance, but local floral resources had a significantly positive effect, especially in isolated fragments. These results suggest that bumblebee colonies encountered sufficient floral resources within the local 1.4 ha habitat fragments to support colony growth, making long-distance foraging trips to neighboring fragments unnecessary. From a conservation perspective, we suggest that efforts to improve colony performance should prioritize boosting local floral resources over manipulation of large-scale landscape features.

Mean body size predicts colony performance in the common eastern bumble bee (Bombus impatiens)

Prior studies suggest that both the mean and variation of worker size predict the performance of bumble bee colonies. The 'variation hypothesis' posits that colony performance increases with variation of worker body size due to more efficient division of labour within colonies. The 'mean size hypothesis' posits that colony performance increases with mean bumble bee size, as each individual’s efficiency tends to increase with body size. The present study tested these non-mutually exclusive hypotheses by establishing 62 Bombus impatiens Cresson (Hymenoptera, Apidae) nest boxes in 32 semi-natural savanna fragments within large-scale experimental landscapes in South Carolina (U.S.A.). Based on measurements of > 24 000 individuals and on colony growth over ca. 7 weeks, our results support the mean size hypothesis, not the variation hypothesis.

Supplemental data Effects of imidacloprid exposure on honey bee colony growth and activity

To better understand how exposure to a low (5 ppb) concentration of imidacloprid affects honey bee colonies we conducted five field experiments involving a total of 54 bee colonies. In each experiment, bee colonies in one treatment group were fed sugar syrup adulterated with 5ppb imidacloprid over six weeks, and colonies in the other group were fed unadulturated sugar syrup over the same time period. Treatments were intended to simulate nectar collection by the colonies. No commercial agriculture existed within 10 km of the sites. We collected data from hive assessments, including adult bee mass and mass of food resources, and the total surface area of capped brood; and we collected data from sensors, including continuous hive weight, internal temperature and, for two years of the study, internal CO2 concentration. We measured Varroa mite fall before and after treatment each year of the study, and for 3 years of the study we measured the dry weight of newly-emerged adult bees.

This dataset contains images used to observe double-crested cormorant and great egret nests on Chimney Pole Marsh, VA, a low-lying barrier marsh on the Atlantic coast of the Delmarva Peninsula. The camera was in operation June 15, 2010 to July 7, 2010, Aug, 3, 4 and 31, 2010, and May 10 through Aug. 11, 2011. Images were captured roughly once every 10 seconds during the day, resulting in a total of 287,564 images.

Data from: Colony size affects breeding density, but not spatial distribution type, in a seabird

<p>The spatial distribution of individuals within populations can result in fine-scale density-dependence and affect the social environment that is encountered. As such, it is important to quantify within-population spatial structuring and understand the factors that shape it. In this study, we make use of point process statistics to test whether colony size affects the statistical type of spatial nest distribution produced by common terns (<i>Sterna hirundo</i>) breeding at identical man-made rectangular and homogeneous islands of fixed physical size. Comparing sub-colonies of variable density both within and across years, we find that inter-nest distances are smaller at higher local and overall breeding density, but that the spatial distribution type does not vary across the observed densities. This suggests that the birds' main settlement rules do not depend on density. In our case, analyses of fine-scale density-dependence or potential social effects therefore do not need to account for between-individual heterogeneity in settlement decision rules or acceptance of these rules. We urge, however, other studies to similarly test for density-dependence of the spatial distribution of individuals before undertaking such 'down-stream' analyses.</p>

Data from: Inter-colony variation in foraging flight characteristics of black-headed gulls Chroicocephalus ridibundus during the incubating period

Using GPS-loggers, we examined the influence of colony, sex, and bird identity on foraging flight characteristics of black-headed gulls <i>Chroicocephalus ridibundus </i>during the incubation period. We studied tracks of 36 individuals breeding in one urban and two rural colonies in Poland. Birds from both rural colonies performed the furthest flights (mean 8-12 km, up to 27 km) foraging mainly in agricultural areas. Gulls from the urban colony performed shorter flights (median 5 km, up to 17 km) visiting mainly urbanized areas and water bodies. We found that females performed longer flights and their flights parameters were less repeatable compared to males. Males from both rural colonies visited water bodies more frequently than females. In all colonies males (but not females) used habitats unproportionally to their availability in the vicinity. Relatively low inter-individual and relatively high intra-individual overlap in home ranges indicated considerable foraging site fidelity. Individuals specialized in the use of particular type of habitat performed shorter foraging flights compared to individuals using diverse habitats during their foraging flights. Our results indicate diverse foraging strategies of black-headed gulls, including generalists that explore various habitats and specialists characterized by high foraging site and habitat fidelity.

Data from: Geographic patterns in colonial reproductive strategy in Myrmecina nipponica: links between biogeography and a key polymorphism in ants

<p>The ability to express different phenotypes can help define species distributions by allowing access to, and exploitation of, new environments. Social insects employ two markedly different reproductive strategies with contrasting cost/benefit characteristics: independent colony foundation (ICF), which is associated with high dispersal range and high risk, and dependent colony foundation (DCF), characterized by low risk but low dispersal. The ant <i>Myrmecina nipponica</i> employs both of these strategies, with the frequency of each apparently varying between populations. We combine molecular data with data on reproductive strategy from different populations of this species throughout Japan to explore how this polymorphism is linked to environmental factors and if this relationship can help explain the current and historical biogeography of this species. Reproductive strategy exhibited a strong geographic pattern, with ICF predominant in southern populations and DCF more common in northern and southern highland populations. Molecular analyses clearly divided populations into broad geographic regions, with the southern-lowland populations basal to (southern-highland (+ northern)) populations. Intra-population polymorphism in colony founding strategy was widespread, and polymorphism was reconstructed as the likely ancestral state. The frequency of different strategies was linked with climate, with DCF more common in colder areas. A recent inferred origin to the northern lineage suggests that colonization of northern Japan was a rapid event coincident with warming at the end of the last glacial maxima, likely facilitated by the cold-adaptive advantages of DCF. We discuss how such polymorphisms could help explain the biogeography of this and other social insects.</p>

Long-term effects of antibiotic treatments on honeybee colony fitness – a modelling approach

<p><b>1.</b> Gut microbiome disequilibrium is increasingly <span>implicated </span>in host fitness reductions, including for the economically important and disease-challenged western honey bee, <i>Apis mellifera</i>. In lab experiments the antibiotic tetracycline, which is used to prevent American Foulbrood Disease in countries including the US, elevates honey bee mortality by disturbing the microbiome. It is unclear however, how elevated individual mortality affects colony level fitness.</p> <p><b>2.</b> We used an agent-based model (BEEHAVE) and empirical data to assess colony level effects of antibiotic-induced worker bee mortality, by measuring colony size. We investigated the relationship between the duration that the antibiotic-induced mortality probability is imposed for and colony size.</p> <p><b>3.</b> We found that when simulating antibiotic-induced mortality of worker bees from just 60 days per year, up to a permanent effect, the colony is reduced such that tetracycline treatment would not meet the European Food Safety Authority's (EFSA) honey bee protection goals. When antibiotic mortality was imposed for the hypothetical minimal exposure time, which assumes that antibiotics only impact the bee's fitness during the recommended treatment period of fifteen days in both spring and autumn, the colony fitness reduction was only marginally under the EFSA's threshold.</p> <p><b>4.</b> Synthesis and Applications: Modelling colony level impacts of antibiotic treatment shows that individual antibiotic-induced honey bee worker mortality can lead to colony mortality. To assess the full impact, the persistence of antibiotic-induced mortality in honey bees must be determined experimentally, <i>in vivo</i>. We caution that as the domestication of new insect species increases, maintaining healthy gut microbiomes is of paramount importance to insect health and commercial productivity. The recommendation from this work is to limit prophylactic use of antibiotics and to not exceed recommended treatment strategies for domesticated insects. This is especially important for highly social insects as excess antibiotic use will likely decrease colony growth and an increase in colony mortality.</p>
