Data from: Effectiveness of Computerized Cognitive Training Programs (CCTP) with Game-like Features in Children with or without Neuropsychological Disorders: a Meta-Analytic Investigation

<p>Computerized cognitive training programs (CCTP) are based on the assumption that cognitive abilities may be boosted by repetitively performing challenging tasks. The integration of game-like features in these programs, associated with the goal of amusing or rewarding participants, may contribute to generate cognitive benefits. Indeed, reinforcement contingencies have been reported to produce positive effects on performance and motivation, especially in children. This meta-analysis was aimed at providing a quantitative summary of the effectiveness of CCTP with game-like features in school-aged children with typical and atypical development. A total of 24 studies, with the cognitive and behavioral outcome data of 1547 participants, were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify the sources of the observed methodological heterogeneity. A robust variance estimation model, after removal of study outliers, yielded a small-to-moderate significant effect size. Final results pointed out smaller but more precise estimate effect sizes according to methodological aspects related to cognitive domain of outcomes, standardization of measures and type of control applied. Alongside supporting the use of CCTP for rehabilitating cognitive functions, the present results shed light on how different methodological choices are able to shape research findings in the field of children&#39;s cognitive rehabilitation.</p>

Visual function and neuropsychological profile in children with Cerebral Visual Impairment

<p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper &ldquo;Visual function and neuropsychological profile in children with Cerebral Visual Impairment&rdquo; published on &ldquo;Children&rdquo;.</p> <p>In this paper, we aimed to a) describe the clinical and neuropsychological profiles b) to investigate the possible effects of visual functions on neuropsychological performance of a cohort of children diagnosed with CVI.</p> <p>The first sheet of the spreadsheet includes data on medical history, visual functions neuropsychological evaluations of the 51 subjects included in the descriptive study. The second sheet includes data on visual functions and neuropsychological evalutations for correlation analyses. All the data, except for age, are encoded as reported in the third sheet.</p> <p>Fifty-one children with CVI were included in the descriptive study, and 40 children were selected for the correlation analyses. For each participant, we collected data on neuropsychological assessment, basic visual functions, global development features.</p> <p>Results showed that oculomotor dysfunction involving saccades and smooth pursuit may be a core symptom of CVI and might have a significant impact on cognitive visual and other neuropsychological abilities. Furthermore, visual acuity and contrast sensitivity may influence cognitive, cognitive visual and academic performances. Our findings suggest the importance of a comprehensive assessment of both visual and neuropsychological functions in children when CVI is suspected, to provide a more comprehensive functional profile and define the best habilitation strategy to sustain functional vision.</p>

Visual function and neuropsychological profiling of Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus.

<p>Introduction</p> <p>This database includes the raw data linked with the paper &ldquo;Visual function and neuropsychological profiling of Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus&rdquo; accepted for publication on &ldquo;Brain Sciences&rdquo;. In this paper, we aimed to a) describe visual function in children with Idiopathic Infantile Nystagmus (IIN) b) investigate its possible impact on neuropsychological development and its implications in functional vision, such as learning abilities. The spreadsheet includes data on medical history and clinical characteristics of the 60 included subjects (columns A-I), visual functions and neuro-ophthalmological data (columns J-U), cognitive and visuocognitive data (columns V-AM), school learnings performances (columns AN-AR), neuroradiological, electrophysiological and genetic data (columns AS-AV). The encoding of data is presented in the second sheet.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This retrospective cross-sectional work included 60 patients (43 males; mean age 7 years, range 2 months-17years, 9 month) diagnosed with IIN from January 1st, 2007 to May 31st, 2023. Data about clinical and diagnostic evaluations were collected in a data set during a review of medical records.</p> <p>Results (in brief)</p> <p>The majority of subjects in our cohort presented reduced VA for far distances and normal VA for near distances associated with oculo-motor abnormalities. The overall scores of cognitive and visual-cognitive tests were in the normal range but revealed peculiar cognitive and visual-cognitive profiles, defined by specific frailties in processing speed and visual-motor integration compared to the other performances. The same neuropsychological profiles characterize many neurodevelopmental disorders. As the first exploring neuropsychologic competencies in children with IIN, our study unveils the presence of subclinical frailties that need to be addressed to sustain academic and social inclusion.</p>
