Masting is the synchronous and highly variable production of fruit within a population. Although several hypotheses have been proposed to explain why and how masting evolved in plants as a reproductive strategy, the factors that trigger a large reproductive effort in a particular year are still not well understood. While both weather and resources have been proposed to play an important role, testing these hypotheses has been challenging due to a lack of long-term data and appropriate experimental designs. In this manuscript, we used 18 years of acorn production data to analyze the relationship between resources, weather, and masting in black oak (Quercus velutina) and chestnut oak (Q. montana). The data were collected in southeast Ohio as part of the Fire and Fire Surrogate (FFS) study, which applied silvicultural treatments (i.e., thinning and prescribed fires) to reduce competition and manipulate resources. We found species-specific responses to the thinning and fire treatments, with an overall increase in acorn production for chestnut oak in the thin + burn treatment and an increase for black oak in the thin-only treatment compared to the control. Chestnut oak reproduction also had strong positive relationships with warm spring temperatures, and a positive change in summer temperatures compared to the previous year (i.e., summer temperatures that went from cool to warm). For black oak, warm spring temperatures increased acorn production while later starts to spring warming the year before decreased acorn production. These results support the hypotheses that both resources and weather (as a cue and as a limiting factor) are important for masting in oaks. Thus, both factors should be included in predictive models for acorn production under current and future climate conditions.

The role of boundary length and adjacent patch contrast in guppy mate choice: Dataset, Matlab and R codes

<p>The presence of various combinations of adjacent colours within polymorphic species' colour pattern could have a major impact on mate choice. We studied the role of pattern geometry in predicting mate choice in guppies using boundary strength analysis (BSA). BSA estimates the visual contrast intensity between two adjacent colour patches (<i>ΔS</i>) weighted by the lengths of the boundaries between these adjacent colour patches. We measured both the chromatic (hue and saturation) and achromatic (luminance) <i>ΔS</i> for each pair of adjacent patches. For each male's colour pattern, we measured BSA as both mean (<i>mΔS</i>)<i> </i>and coefficient of variation (<i>cvΔS</i>) of all <i>ΔS</i> weighted by their corresponding boundary lengths. We also determined if specific colour patch boundaries had an impact on female preferences and whether these predicted overall male contrast (<i>mΔS</i>). We found that males with a higher <i>mΔS</i> were more attractive to females and that six boundaries containing either fuzzy black or black as one of the pair colours significantly affected female preferences, indicating that (1) females favoured highly conspicuous males and (2) melanin-based patches could be used as a signal amplifier, not only for orange but for other colours.</p>

R code, spatial and tabular data to fully reproduce STEPS simulations of population change for common brushtail possum, grassland melomys and northern brown bandicoot in northern Australia

<ol> <li> <p>The development of effective fire management for biodiversity conservation is a global challenge. The highly dynamic nature of fire, the difficulty in replicating 'real-world' fire experiments, and the need to understand population changes at large spatiotemporal scales make computer simulations particularly useful for identifying optimal fire management regimes for biodiversity conservation. </p> </li> <li> <p>We aimed to develop a flexible modelling approach with which to investigate how the spatiotemporal application of fire (i.e. management scenarios) influences savanna biodiversity. We used existing data from a landscape-scale fire experiment to develop population simulations for the common brushtail possum (<i>Trichosurus vulpecula</i>), grassland melomys (<i>Melomys burtoni</i>) and northern brown bandicoot (<i>Isoodon macrourus</i>) across the Kapalga area of Kakadu National Park in northern Australia. We simulated how populations were expected to change between 1995 and 2015 in response to the fire patterns observed at Kapalga over this period, and under a hypothetical management scenario of extensive prescribed burning.</p> </li> <li> <p>Our models predicted a substantial decline in all three species in response to the observed fire regime at Kapalga, suggesting that the fire patterns observed at Kapalga, with the associated mechanisms and interactions with other ecological processes, were not conducive with the persistence of native mammal populations. </p> </li> <li> <p>Our prescribed burning scenario had little effect on the predicted population trajectory of the common brushtail possum and grassland melomys, but markedly improved the population trajectory of the northern brown bandicoot. These inconsistencies highlight the need for a nuanced approach to fire management across northern Australian savannas, that is tailored to local conditions and management objectives. </p> </li> <li> <p>Synthesis and applications. The modelling approach outlined here, provides a basis for identifying fire patterns that are beneficial for conserving biodiversity, thereby increasing our capacity to establish clear targets for prescribed fire management. Importantly, this approach is flexible and can be easily adapted to other taxa and fire-prone ecosystems.</p> </li> </ol>

Thus, individuals which invested in learning to cope with local conditions may be more reluctant to leave their natal place. In order to disentangle the complex relationship between dispersal and learning abilities we implemented individual-based simulations. By allowing for developmental plasticity, individuals could either develop a "resident" or "dispersal" cognitive phenotype.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In line with our expectations, the correlation between learning abilities and dispersal could take any direction, depending how much time individuals had to recoup their investment in cognition. Both, longevity and the timing of dispersal within lifecycles determine the time individuals have to recoup that investment and thus crucially influence this correlation. We therefore suggest that species' life-history will strongly impact the expected cognitive abilities of dispersers, relative to their resident conspecifics, and that cognitive abilities might be an integral part of dispersal syndromes.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Serological dataset and R code for: Patterns and processes of pathogen exposure in gray wolves across North America

<p>The presence of many pathogens varies in a predictable manner with latitude, with infections decreasing from the equator towards the poles. We investigated the geographic trends of pathogens infecting a widely distributed carnivore: the gray wolf (<i>Canis lupus</i>). We compiled a large serological dataset of nearly 2000 wolves from 17 study areas, spanning 80º longitude and 50º latitude. Generalized linear mixed models were constructed to predict the probability of seropositivity of four important viruses: canine adenovirus, herpesvirus, parvovirus, and distemper virus – and two parasites: <i>Neospora caninum </i>and <i>Toxoplasma gondii</i>.</p> <p>Canine adenovirus and herpesvirus were the most widely distributed pathogens, whereas <i>N. caninum</i> was relatively uncommon. Canine parvovirus and distemper had high annual variation, with western populations experiencing more frequent outbreaks than eastern populations. Seroprevalence of all infections increased as wolves aged, and denser wolf populations had a greater risk of exposure. Probability of exposure was positively correlated with human density, suggesting that dogs and synanthropic animals may be important pathogen reservoirs. Pathogen exposure did not appear to follow a latitudinal gradient, with the exception of <i>N. caninum</i>. Instead, clustered study areas were more similar: wolves from the Great Lakes region had lower odds of exposure to the viruses, but higher odds of exposure to <i>N. caninum</i> and <i>T. gondii</i>; the opposite was true for wolves from the central Rocky Mountains. Overall, mechanistic predictors were more informative of seroprevalence trends than latitude and longitude. Individual host characteristics as well as inherent features of ecosystems determined pathogen exposure risk on a large scale.</p> <p>Here we provide the serological dataset and the R code used in Brandell et al. 2021. R-code for: A systems level analysis of epileptogenesis-associated proteome alterations

<p>Despite intense research efforts, the knowledge about the mechanisms of epileptogenesis and epilepsy is still considered incomplete and limited. However, an in-depth understanding of molecular pathophysiological processes is crucial for the rational selection of innovative biomarkers and target candidates.</p> <p>Here, we subjected proteomic data from different phases of a chronic rat epileptogenesis model to a comprehensive systems level analysis. Weighted Gene Co-expression Network analysis identified several modules of interconnected protein groups reflecting distinct molecular aspects of epileptogenesis in the hippocampus and the parahippocampal cortex. Characterization of these modules did not only further validate the data but also revealed regulation of molecular processes not described previously in the context of epilepsy development. The data sets also provide valuable information about temporal patterns, which should be taken into account for development of preventive strategies in particular when it comes to multi-targeting network pharmacology approaches.</p> <p>In addition, principal component analysis suggests candidate biomarkers, which might inform the design of novel molecular imaging approaches aiming to predict epileptogenesis during different phases or confirm epilepsy manifestation. Further studies are necessary to distinguish between molecular alterations, which correlate with epileptogenesis versus those reflecting a mere consequence of the status epilepticus.</p>
