Collecting data on unlicensed open‐access coastal activities, such as some types of recreational fishing, has often relied on telephone interviews selected from landline directories. However, this approach is becoming obsolete due to changes in communication technology such as a switch to unlisted mobile phones. Other methods, such as boat ramp interviews, are often impractical due to high labor cost. We trialed an autonomous, ultra‐high‐resolution photosampling method as a cost effect solution for direct measurements of a recreational fishery. Our sequential photosampling was batched processed using a novel software application to produce "big data" time series movies from a spatial subset of the fishery, and we validated this with a regional bus‐route survey and interviews with participants at access points. We also compared labor costs between these two methods. Most trailer boat users were recreational fishers targeting tuna spp. Our camera system closely matched trends in temporal variation from the larger scale regional survey, but as the camera data were at much higher frequency, we could additionally describe strong, daily variability in effort. Peaks were normally associated with weekends, but consecutive weekend tuna fishing competitions led to an anomaly of high effort across the normal weekday lulls. By reducing field time and batch processing imagery, Monthly labor costs for the camera sampling were a quarter of the bus‐route survey; and individual camera samples cost 2.5% of bus route samples to obtain. Gigapixel panoramic camera observations of fishing were representative of the temporal variability of regional fishing effort and could be used to develop a cost‐efficient index. High‐frequency sampling had the added benefit of being more likely to detect abnormal patterns of use. Combinations of remote sensing and on‐site interviews may provide a solution to describing highly variable effort in recreational fisheries while also validating activity and catch.
Data from: Empirical evidence for species-specific export of fish naïveté from a no-take marine protected area in a coastal recreational hook and line fishery
No-take marine protected areas (MPAs) are assumed to enhance fisheries catch via the "spillover" effect, where biomass is exported to adjacent exploited areas. Recent studies in spearfishing fisheries suggest that the spillover of gear-naïve individuals from protected to unprotected sites increases catch rates outside the boundaries of MPAs. Whether this is a widespread phenomenon that also holds for other gear types and species is unknown. In this study, we tested if the distance to a Mediterranean MPA predicted the degree of vulnerability to hook and line in four small-bodied coastal fish species. With the assistance of underwater video recording, we investigated the interaction effect of the distance to the boundary of an MPA and species type relative to the latency time to ingest a natural bait, which was considered as a surrogate of fish naïveté or vulnerability to fishing. Vulnerability to angling increased (i.e., latency time decreased) within and near the boundary of an MPA for an intrinsically highly catchable species (Serranus scriba), while it remained constant for an intrinsically uncatchable control species (Chromis chromis). While all of the individuals of S. scriba observed within the MPA and surrounding areas were in essence captured by angling gear, only one fifth of individuals in the far locations were captured. This supports the potential for the spillover of gear-naïve and consequently more vulnerable fish from no-take MPAs. Two other species initially characterized as intermediately catchable (Coris julis and Diplodus annularis) also had a shorter latency time in the vicinity of an MPA, but for these two cases the trend was not statistically significant. Overall, our results suggest that an MPA-induced naïveté effect may not be universal and may be confined to only intrinsically highly catchable fish species. This fact emphasizes the importance of considering the behavioural dimension when predicting the outcomes of MPAs, otherwise the effective contribution may be smaller than predicted for certain highly catchable species such as S. scriba.

Vastus intermedius muscle architecture predicts the late phase of the knee extension rate of force development in recreationally resistance-trained men
<p><strong>Objectives: </strong>The current study investigated the correlation between quadriceps muscle architecture and the knee extension rate of force development (RFD).</p> <p><strong>Design: </strong>cross-sectional study.</p> <p><strong>Methods: </strong>Muscle thickness, pennation angle and fascicle length normalized per the thigh-length were measured via ultrasound in vastus lateralis, rectus femoris, vastus intermedius and vastus medialis. The knee extension rate of force was assessed isometrically at 90° knee angle and calculated in different 50-ms epochs (0-50, 50-100, 100-150, 150-200 and 200-250ms). The maximum voluntary contraction was also recorded.</p> <p><strong>Results: </strong>Large correlations were observed between vastus intermedius muscle thickness and the 100-150ms (r=0.694, p=0.004), 150-200ms (r=0.597, p=0.019) and 200-250ms (r=0.546, p=0.045) epochs. Large correlation was observed between vastus intermedius normalized fascicle length and 100-150ms (r=0.570, p=0.043) and large correlations with 150-200ms (r=0.643, p=0.010) and 200-250ms (r=0.629, p=0.012) epochs. Additionally, large correlations were observed between vastus lateralis normalized fascicle length and the 100-150ms (r=0.535, p=0.049), 150-200ms (r=0.629, p=0.016) and 200-250ms (r=0.563, p=0.046) epochs. Vastus intermedius muscle thickness predicted 59% (R2=0.581, p=0.002) of the RFD of the 100-150ms epoch; vastus intermedius muscle thickness and fascicle length predicted 51% (R2=0.506, p=0.029) of the 150-200ms epoch; vastus intermedius and vastus lateralis fascicle length predicted 48% (R2=0.483, p=0.037) of the 200-250ms epoch. No further correlation was observed.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions: </strong>Fascicle length and muscle thickness were observed as predictive of the late phase of the rate of force development. Vastus intermedius muscle architecture has a primary role in the knee extension RFD.</p>
"Understanding leisure constraints in tourism context: An investigation of Russian tourists' constraints in participating in recreational fishing in Finland", SPSS dataset
<p>SPSS Dataset for journal article titled ""Understanding leisure constraints in tourism context: An investigation of Russian tourists' constraints in participating in recreational fishing in Finland", SPSS dataset".<br> <br> <strong>Article abstract</strong><br> Research on leisure constraints brings insight on consumer preferences and benefits tourism service providers and developers. Understanding why people seek or avoid destination activities, such as recreational fishing, helps to develop strategies to address these constraints and to modulate participation. This case study utilizes the conceptual model of leisure constraints and extends leisure constraints research to an international setting, by focusing on Russian tourists’ recreational fishing activities in Finland. It also explores the customers’ views on the role of water quality in fishing activity. A panel data survey with 457 Russian tourists visiting Finland has showed that leisure constraints vary across recreational fishing participants, non-participants and potential participants. While Russian tourists, who have been fishing in Finland, barely express any constraints, intrapersonal and structural constraints related to knowledge about Finnish fishing environment and information about service providers received the highest ratings among non-participants and potential participants. The language barrier has become the most highly rated constraint across all groups. While females are generally more constrained than males, a closer look to gender differences among non-participants and potential participants shows that males are more constrained across several statements. This case study contributes to the leisure constraints literature, particularly applying the constraints framework to the context of international tourism and to water quality.</p>
