Urban forests host rich polypore assemblages in a Nordic metropolitan area

<p>This dataset contains data for a manuscript titled 'Urban forests host rich polypore assemblages in a Nordic metropolitan area' where we have studied associations between the diversity of dead-wood inhabiting fungi and urbanization. The included spreadsheets contain data used in the analyses, i.e. polypore species occurrences, species richness and environmental data, accompanied by annotations about the characteristics of the study sites and individual dead-wood units. Data is given at two spatial scales on two separate spreadsheets: one at the level of dead-wood units and the other at the level of forest stands. Variable explanations are provided in separate text files. Emergency-line calls as an indicator to assess human-wildlife interaction in urban areas

<p><span>Human-wildlife interactions (HWI) are increasingly common as human disturbance and development continue to remove wildlife habitats. Documenting HWIs is critical for management agencies to develop strategies and management decisions that meet the needs of both people and wildlife. However, evaluating the frequency and types of HWI at broad spatial scales (e.g., national or regional level) can be costly and difficult to implement by managers. In this study, we apply a novel method for evaluating the patterns of HWI in urban areas using publicly available data from emergency calls placed by inhabitants of Romania's &gt;300 urban areas. We used information from 4,601 emergency calls (Romanian National Emergency Call System 112), consisting of (1) wildlife species, (2) spatial location, (3) date and time, and (4) a short description of the emergency.  Out of the 318 analyzed cities, 300 cities documented emergency calls on HWI between 2015–20120, with roe deer and brown bear as the most frequent species. There was an increasing trend in HWI-related emergency calls in 73% of the urban areas. We mapped the large-scale distribution of HWI by species and type of interactions, capturing variations at the national level, and further, we analyze social and biophysical factors influencing the occurrence and frequency of HWI. The results showed that social factors have the same positive or negative effect on all species, while the effect of the biophysical factors varied between species. Particularly, the presence of large natural habitats, represented by forests, influenced the number of calls only for brown bears. Seminatural landscapes with agricultural land have a different influence in terms of effect and significance for the considered species. Our results suggest that publicly available data from emergency calls can be used for the rapid assessment of HWI and for evaluating trends and predictors of HWI at broad spatial scales.</span></p>

A tightly coupled river-ocean model for simulating combined flood due to storm surge and river flow in coastal-urban areas

<p>Coastal flooding, resulting from storm surges or extreme river flows, causes significant causalities and damage to properties in low-lying areas. The simultaneous occurrence of river flows and storm surges, termed combined/compound events, exacerbates the flood risk compared to independent occurrences. Combined flood events are simulated with the help of hydraulic and hydrodynamic models using a loosely or tightly coupled approach. In the loosely coupled approach, a hydrodynamic model simulates storm surges first, and a hydraulic model then simulates inland flood due to river overflow considering surge as the boundary condition at the river mouth/estuary. Conversely, the tightly coupled approach involves simultaneous simulation of both river flow and storm surge by coding the mathematical representation of river and ocean flow dynamics in the same numerical model. This allows the interaction between river and ocean flows to be simulated anywhere in the combined river-ocean computational domain, making it highly relevant for simulating combined floods. However, existing models based on this approach encounter numerical instability, especially in inland regions where topography variation is steep and highly uneven. Also, such combined models are highly limited for large scale applications. Therefore, this research focuses on developing a tightly coupled 2D finite volume river-ocean model called IROMS-C2D. The developed model intends to address the limitations of the previous models and provide a stable solution framework for the simulation of combined flooding resulting from the interaction of storm surges and river flows in coastal urban areas. Further, it enhances our understanding of flood risks in coastal areas, particularly in urban settings, and facilitates the formulation of effective measures for flood control and adaptation of coastal infrastructure.</p>
