MARINE DEBRIS ACCUMULATION ON THE BEACH OF TASIK RIA LOCAL TOURISM DESTINATION NORTH SULAWESI INDONESIA
<p><strong>Abstract. </strong>Marine debris is a global issue and a hot topic in Indonesia. This study involved collecting and quantifying various types of debris at Tasik Ria Beach. The study area is Tasik Ria Beach, a small local tourist destination in Minahasa and Manado areas, with high biodiversity and an essential source of seagrass providing significant and vital habitat for endangered species. Debris was collected on sandy beach and mud beach areas between May and August 2022. The results indicated that ceramic and glass debris was found in the greatest number followed by plastic and other debris, thin plastic, and hard plastic. The major contributing factor to the debris abundance in Tasik Ria beach was the shoreline and recreational activities which showed that the land-based sources provided major inputs of plastic pollution at the beaches. The Clean Coastal Index (CCI) calculation of Tasik Ria Beach yielded a result of 5.8 at the sandy beach whereas at the mud beach was 0.65. Thus, the sandy beach was classified as moderately clean and the mud beach was classified as very clean. </p>

The presence and abundance of Escherichia coli in beach sediment following a coastal renourishment project
<p>Erosion poses a major threat to oceanic beaches worldwide. To combat this threat, management agencies often utilize renourishment, which supplements eroded beaches with offsite sand. This process alters the physical characteristics of the beach and can subsequently influence the presence and abundance of microbes. In this study, we examined how a renourishment project impacted sand grain size and the presence and abundance of <em>Escherichia</em> <em>coli</em> (<em>E</em>. <em>coli</em>), a common bacteria species. Using an observational field approach, we compared abundances of <em>E. coli</em> and sand grain sizes between non-renourished and renourished sections of Folly Beach, South Carolina, USA in 2014 and 2015. We found that <em>E. coli</em> was prevalent in every zone of the beach in both years of sampling. Additionally, we found that in comparison to non-renourished areas, renourished areas had significantly higher abundances of <em>E. coli</em> and coarser sand grains in the intertidal zone. However, these differences were temporary and only present following the initial renourishment event. Collectively, our findings raise concerns about how physical changes in sand grain size, and the introduction of offsite sand to a beach, could alter bacterial presence and growth. However, more work is needed to fully understand the timescales these effects operate upon.</p>
Beach recreationists perceive a lack of knowledge about shorebirds' needs as a constraint to walking around shorebird flocks
<div>Walking through shorebird flocks can have negative impacts on shorebird populations. Understanding human behavior is essential for minimizing disturbance. As such, we used a mixed-methods approach consisting of phone interviews and a survey to explore 1) recreationists' perceived benefits and constraints to voluntarily walking around shorebird flocks, 2) recreationists' intentions to walk around shorebird flocks, 3) differences in behavioral intention by sociodemographic variables, and 4) differences in norms, benefits, and constraints among recreationists who intend to walk around flocks and recreationists who do not intend to walk around flocks. From the interviews and survey, we found that recreationists' perceived benefits to walking around flocks were maintaining undisturbed conditions for shorebirds and reducing harm to people and their dogs. Recreationists perceived constraints to walking around flocks related to knowledge about shorebirds' needs. The majority of recreationists were willing to walk around flocks, rather than through them. Intention to walk around flocks can vary by sociodemographic groups. Recreationists who intended to walk around flocks had stronger personal and social norms than recreationists who did not intend to walk around flocks. Recreationists who intended to walk around flocks generally agreed more strongly that maintaining undisturbed conditions for shorebirds and reduced harm to people and their dogs were benefits, compared to participants who did not intend to walk around flocks. Recreationists who did not intend to walk around flocks agreed more strongly that knowledge was a constraint compared to participants who intended to walk around flocks. Our findings could be used in the strategy development phase of a community-based social marketing campaign (CBSM) aimed at encouraging recreationists to voluntarily walk around shorebird flocks. Using behavior change techniques, benefits uncovered in this study can be emphasized and constraints uncovered in this study can be reduced for the purpose of promoting less disturbance to shorebirds.</div>
Airflow dynamics and aeolian sand transport across a beach-climbing dune-clifftop dune system
<p>This study presents an analysis of wind flow and sediment transport from the beach, up a 50m high, long (130m), steep (mean slope 26°) climbing dune and across a 1.5 m high max, 85 m long and 17.5 m wide clifftop dune 30km south of Dakhla in Morocco, NW Africa during highly oblique incident wind conditions. Multiple 2D sonic and cup/vane anemometers and sand traps were utilised for measurements. Flow steering was significant on the upper climbing dune. Flow deceleration occurred near the dune toe, and topographic forcing of flow was considerable on the upper slopes of the climbing dune. Near-surface flow steadiness (CV<sub>U1</sub>, CV<sub>U0.25</sub>) on the climbing dune straight slope segment was low and constant The distance upslope over which the airflow reached the speed comparable to that on the beach increases as the incident wind speed increases. The greatest flow acceleration and speed-up was observed at the cliff edge reaching 250% at 1m height and 220% at 0.25m height for the lowest incident wind speed class (4-5 m/s). The sand transport rate declined from the beach to the climbing dune toe and lower slope, but at the uppermost section of the climbing dune was 4 times higher than at the beach for the 7-8m/s incident wind speed. Sand in aeolian transport was generally finer than surface sand with mean grain size increasing up the slope. A comparison of the sand transport data collected with sand transport models, and the effects of slope on aeolian transport are also examined.</p>
Nesting activity of Olive ridley and effect of artificial shade at Cascajilloso Beach, a new inhabited nesting site in Pacific Panama
<p><span>Sea turtle nesting activity on newly monitored beaches yields important data to support future regional and global conservation assessments. Here we report on nesting activity of Olive Ridley (<em>Lepidochelys</em> <em>olivacea</em>) at Cascajilloso Beach in Pacific Panama based on data from a new hatchery during seasons 2019, 2020 and 2021. Besides, we conducted a field experiment analyzing the effects of artificial shading on </span><span>hatchlings' biometric characteristics, hatching success and the incubation period. Nesting activity based on number of egg clutches transferred to the hatchery reached a peak between September (33%) and October (25%). Curved carapace length (CCL) of nesting females (64.3–66.2 cm) was similar to other populations of the Eastern Tropical Pacific (ETP). The number of egg clutches was 80 in 2019, 74 in 2020 and 108 in 2021, however, the clutch size was slightly smaller (91.5 to 94.5 eggs) compared with other populations of the ETP. This could be a phenotypic variation of nesting females at this beach. The ability to move egg clutches to the hatchery was affected during 2020 season due to COVID-19 restrictions. Heavy rainfall during the incubation period influenced the nest temperatures registered under artificial shade and unshaded treatments (maximum average 29.9 °C), potentially resulting in males. The warmer temperatures in our experimental nests produced heavier hatchlings contrary to general assumptions, but this was also related to straight carapace length only after a threshold value of 40 mm. Hatchlings under the artificial shade were able to grow to a certain size but potentially at the cost of storing less mass (trade-off). The ongoing beach patrolling and hatchery management techniques with long-term baseline data collection are needed to secure the nesting population of <em>L. olivacea</em> at this recently surveyed beach.</span></p>
