Database of indicators of socio-economic development of the Great Altai regions in the post-Soviet period
<p>As part of the research work "Altai vector of Eurasian economic integration: cross-border challenges, effects, strategic objectives and priorities for the Altai Krai" (FZMW-2023-0015), the task was to develop a database of indicators of development of cross-border regions of Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and China for the period 1990-2022. To solve the task, statistical data from official sources were used. The database contains 68 indicators of socio-economic development of the Great Altai region, grouped into 10 structural blocks. The temporal resolution of the data is 1 year. The data were preliminarily analyzed for outliers and inconsistencies. On the basis of econometric methods, processing was performed to restore short-term gaps in the time series of the data. The generated database represents a unique set of socio-economic and climatic indicators for the transboundary study area, allowing to solve the problems of modeling and analysis of agricultural production dynamics in the post-Soviet period.</p>

THE IMPACT OF LOCAL PRODUCT BRANDING ON THE ECONOMIC PERFORMANCE OF AGRICULTURAL AND LIVESTOCK AGRO-PROCESSING INDUSTRIES IN VLORA
<p>This study aims to examine the impact of local product branding on the economic performance of the agricultural and livestock agro-processing industries in the region of Vlora. Based on the data collected from local agro-processing and agro-tourism industries, the purpose of this research is to analyze how branding strategies contribute to increasing the level of sales, the level of income, creating a strong identity, and improving the performance of businesses and the territory where these businesses are concentrated. The study includes in the analysis the influence of the local brand in the creation of the identity, in the level of sales, in the income, the profit margins, and the improvement of the economic performance of the agricultural and livestock agro-processing industries. For this reason, the research was conducted with the inclusion of over 100 industries/agritourism, and the analysis of the questionnaire data was conducted with the STATA program. From the results of the research, it is clear that investment in the branding of products with local indicators is necessary to stimulate economic development and to strengthen the market positioning of businesses in the agricultural and livestock sectors. Also, this research provides important recommendations for improving branding practices as a strategic tool for the development and consolidation of agro-processing industries in the region.</p>

Comparative transcriptomics of tropical woody plants supports fast and furious strategy along the leaf economics spectrum in lianas
<p>Lianas, climbing woody plants, influence the structure and function of tropical forests. Climbing traits have evolved multiple times, including ancestral groups such as gymnosperms and pteridophytes, but the genetic basis of the liana strategy is largely unknown. Here, we use a comparative transcriptomic approach for 47 tropical plant species, including ten lianas of diverse taxonomic origins, to identify genes that are consistently expressed or downregulated only in lianas. Our comparative analysis of full-length transcripts enabled the identification of a core interactomic network common to lianas. Sets of transcripts identified from our analysis reveal features related to functional traits pertinent to leaf economics spectrum in lianas, including upregulation of genes controlling epidermal cuticular properties, cell wall remodeling, carbon concentrating mechanism, cell cycle progression, DNA repair and a large suit of downregulated transcription factors and enzymes involved in ABA-mediated stress response as well as lignin and suberin synthesis. Altogether, these genes are known to be significant in shaping plant morphologies through responses such as gravitropism, phyllotaxy and shade avoidance.</p>
Socio-economic information and preferred interaction modalities related to eco-feedback systems
<p>This dataset has been collected during a research conducted by the above authors to understand and improve upon the interactivity, functionality, and ultimately the sustainability effect of smart plugs. As observed in the spreadsheet, we collected socio-demographic information and gathered anonymous responses to three speculative scenarios related to how new eco-feedback systems are defined. Specifically, the dataset reports on the following aspects:</p> <p> </p> <ol> <li>Description and rationale of an eco-feedback information idea they would like to receive (what). This was provided via free-form text.</li> <li>Description of how a smart plug would display this information (how), provided via free-form text. This included one sub-question asking participants which Wattom features their scenario better relates to – provided via multiple choice using four short GIF animations of each feature in action.</li> <li>Description of which location would this information be most useful in (where). This was provided via three sub-questions: (i) four multiple choice options (home, work, shared home, other); (ii) a free-form text with more specific location information; and (iii) 23 multiple choice options with color-coded icons of various appliances and devices).</li> <li>Description of when this information should be displayed throughout the time (when). This was provided via five multiple choice options with the images illustrated in Figure 1.</li> </ol>

<p>BIOCLIMAPATHS is an AXIS-ERANET 2019 granted project, that aims to better understand the impacts of climate change in future societies that have adopted bioeconomy as a substantial pillar of their economies. The project’s main aim – and output – is to provide insights and recommendations for climate resilient and just bioeconomy transition paths for society and economy.</p> <p>The BIOCLIMAPATHS (BCP) consortium leverages on complementary expertise of research teams from Austria, Germany and Spain, developing an innovative, spatially explicit, modelling framework for risk assessments of bioeconomy transitions subject to climate extremes. The project’s main aim – and output – is to provide insights on climate resilient and just bioeconomy transition paths in society.</p> <p>A key tool to achieve this aim is the elaboration of a detailed multisectoral database with high disaggregation on bio-based sectors. For the elaboration of this database, called Bio-MRSUT (Bio-economic Multi-regional Supply-Use Tables) framework, we started from EXIOBASE (Stadler et al. 2018). From the EXIOBASE data to obtaining the series of multi-regional SUT monetary marks, some estimation is required. First, by adapting the initial tables from EXIOBASE to the sectoral structure proposed in BIOCLIMAPATHS. Subsequently, to complete the database with additional information on certain bioeconomy sectors (agriculture, livestock, and biofuels), the 2010 and 2015 BioSAMs (Mainar et al., 2021) carried out by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission have been used, building the pertinent extrapolations to complete the proposed time period. The result of these processes has given rise to multi-regional monetary SUT frameworks for the EU and its Member States with a very broad disaggregation of the bioeconomy sectors. These multiregional frameworks comprise, with reference to the year 2015, a total of 78 activities (44 of Bioeconomy) and 78 goods and services (44 of them bio-economics), for the 28 EU countries (including the United Kingdom) and the Rest of the World, (as well as the interrelationships and bilateral exchanges between all these territories). In addition, they contain the breakdown of final demand and added value, as well as taxes on activities and products and imports by origin (the resulting data matrix contains 4,529 rows and 4,669 columns).</p>
CS2 - Offshore macroalgae cultivation socio-economic assessment in the Faroe Islands 2022
<p>The dataset contains a socio-economic analysis based on the operation of a macroalgae farm in the Faroe Islands. The production system used in the Faroe Islands has the potential to operate offshore, increased production volumes of biomass and allow for the growth of the macroalgae industry in the Atlantic. The socio-economic calculations include employment generation, gross value added and ripple effects of macroalgae production, at two scenarios of scaled up production, first the sustainable farm size and to the maximum exploitation capacity in the Faroes coastline.</p>
