Supporting data for climate-driven tree mortality and fuel aridity increase wildfire's potential sensible heat flux

Wildfire is capable of rapidly releasing the energy stored in forests, with the amount of water in live and dead biomass acting as a regulator on the amount and rate of energy release. Here we used temperature and fuel moisture data to examine climate-driven changes in fuel moisture content over the past three decades. We then calculated the changes in energy release (energy release component and fire radiant energy) for two forests that experienced drought and bark beetle mortality and were subsequently burned by wildfires. We found that mortality transitioned substantial amounts of biomass from live to dead pools. Coupled with climate-driven decreases in fuel moisture content, this change in fuel availability increased the amount of energy that could be released during wildfire in these forests. Our results demonstrate that climate-driven tree mortality and fuel aridity may be increasing the amount of energy that is released during wildfire.

Simulating a Chemically-Fueled Molecular Motor with Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics

This .zip file contains the code, simulation scripts and settings, and figure generation scripts for our manuscript "Simulating a Chemically-Fueled Molecular Motor with Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics." More detailed descriptions are found in the 0README.txt files within the .zip folder.

Manuscript link:

https://arxiv.org/abs/2102.06298

Manuscript abstract:

Most computer simulations of molecular dynamics take place under equilibrium conditions—in a closed, isolated system, or perhaps one held at constant temperature or pressure. Sometimes, extra tensions, shears, or temperature gradients are introduced to those simulations to probe one type of nonequilibrium response to external forces. Catalysts and molecular motors, however, function based on the nonequilibrium dynamics induced by a chemical reaction's thermodynamic driving force. In this scenario, simulations require chemostats capable of preserving the chemical concentrations of the nonequilibrium steady state. We develop such a dynamic scheme and use it to observe cycles of a new particle-based classical model of a catenane-like molecular motor. Molecular motors are frequently modeled with detailed-balance-breaking Markov models, and we explicitly construct such a picture by coarse graining the microscopic dynamics of our simulations in order to extract rates. This work identifies inter-particle interactions that tune those rates to create a functional motor, thereby yielding a computational playground to investigate the interplay between directional bias, current generation, and coupling strength in molecular information ratchets.

Restoration and fuel hazard reduction result in equivalent reductions in Crown fire behavior in dry conifer forests

Over the past several decades, the management of historically frequent-fire forests in the western U.S. has received significant attention due to the linked ecological and social risks posed by the increased occurrence of large, contiguous patches of high-severity fire. As a result, efforts are underway to simultaneously reduce potential fire and fuel hazards and restore characteristics indicative of historical forest structures and ecological processes that enhance the diversity and quality of wildlife habitat across landscapes. Despite widespread agreement on the need for action, there is a perceived tension among scientists concerning silvicultural treatments that modify stands to optimally reduce potential fire behavior (fuel hazard reduction) versus those that aim to emulate historical forest structures and create structurally complex stands (restoration). In this work, we evaluated thinning treatments in the Black Hills National Forest that exemplify the extremes of a treatment continuum that ranges from fuel hazard reduction to restoration. The goal of this work was to understand how the differing 3-dimensional stand structures created by these treatment approaches altered potential fire behavior. Our results indicate that restoration treatments created higher levels of vertical and horizontal structural complexity than the fuel hazard reduction treatments but resulted in similar reductions to potential crown fire behavior. There were some tradeoffs identified as the restoration treatments created larger openings which generated faster mean rates of fire spread; however, these increased spread rates did not translate to higher levels of canopy consumption. Overall, our results suggest that treatments can create vertical and horizontal complexity desired for restoration and wildlife habitat management while reducing fire hazard and that they can be used in concert with traditional fuel hazard reduction treatments to reduce landscape scale fire risk. We also provide some suggestions to land managers seeking to design and implement prescriptions that emulate historical structures and enhance forest complexity.

Photographic data on the influence of the composition, preparation method, time and fuel system on the size of water droplets in a fuel-water emulsion

This data was collected during the research aimed at understanding the influence of the composition, mixing time and time between the production and application of the fuel-water emulsion, as well as the influence of the fuel pump of the miniature gas turbine GTM-120 on the droplet size of the water-fuel emulsion. An emulsion with a water content of 3% to 15% and an emulsifier content of 1% to 3% was tested. The basic fuel in the conducted tests was Jet-A1 with 5% oil additive.

Multiphysics Modeling of Ultrasonic-assisted biomass torrefaction for fuel pellets production

When an ultrasound wave propagates through a volume of biomass medium, the majority of the energy in the acoustic field is absorbed locally by the biomass, resulting in the generation of heat. This torrefaction effect results in a temperature increase of the biomass, converting biomass into a coal-like intermediate with upgraded fuel properties over the original biomass. However, few analyses can be found in the literature explaining the mechanism of ultrasound-assisted biomass torrefaction. This research aims to model an ultrasound-assisted biomass torrefaction system. The developed multiphysics model depicts the piezoelectric effect of a transducer, the vibration amplitude at the output end of the ultrasonic horn, and the acoustic intensity and temperature distributions in the biomass medium. The vibration amplitude and frequency of the ultrasonic horn were measured by a non-contact capacitive sensor, and it is verified the model can accurately simulate the ultrasonic vibration of the experimental system. The temperature at the center of the biomass was measured to validate the model’s temperature prediction. Both simulation and experiment showed that ultrasound-assisted biomass torrefaction can create torrefied fuel pellet within 60 seconds.

A high-performance Ni-CeO2/Ni/Ni-Y2O3·ZrO2 three-layer anode for direct iso-octane feeding of solid oxide fuel cells

Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) directly fed with iso-octane are expected to be power sources of mobile devices and automobiles. However, the conventional anode catalysts nickel (Ni) or cerium oxide (CeO2) used for direct feeding of iso-octane do not suppress carbon deposition or generate high-power. In this study, we investigated the Ni-CeO2/Ni/Ni-yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) three-layer anode to establish the suppression of carbon deposition and high-power generation in the SOFC. The anode consists of a Ni-CeO2 catalyst layer as the top layer, a Ni catalyst layer as the second layer, and a Ni-YSZ catalyst layer as the third layer on top of the electrolyte. The concept of three-layer anode is follows: Fuel reforming occurs in the Ni-CeO2 layer, the reformed H2 or CO is electrochemically oxidized in the Ni-YSZ catalyst layer, and the Ni catalyst middle layer prevents the reaction between YSZ and CeO2. Scanning electron microscopy and electrochemical characterization confirmed carbon deposition suppression and improved power generation. The anode showed no carbon deposition and generated high-power, 600 mA cm−2 and 150 mW cm−2, at 950 °C and a steam/carbon ratio of 3.0. Additionally, we discuss the fuel reforming reactions on the three-layer electrode by the results of exhaust gas analysis.
