A Framework to Promote Diversity & Inclusion in Workforce Development in the Southeast States

<p>The lack of workforce diversity has made it challenging for transportation agencies to incorporate resiliency into their long-term plans effectively. This project developed a framework for creating an inclusive and functional workforce environment for transportation agencies in the southeast region. The project identifies existing gaps, predicts future needs, and captures the role transportation agencies, research centers, Departments of Transportations (DOTs), and professional organizations can play to recruit, train, and maintain a diverse and inclusive workforce. This research will ultimately contribute to creating a resilient transportation workforce structure in the southeast region. The goal of this project is to present an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) -focused framework for promoting diversity and inclusion within the workforce.&nbsp;</p>

Data from: Reevaluating monotypic Eleutherostylis from New Guinea and the Moluccas, and its inclusion in Grewia (Malvaceae: Grewioideae)

<p>Morphological and molecular phylogenetic evidence indicate that <em>Eleutherostylis</em> Burret (Malvaceae: Grewioideae), a monotypic genus described from New Guinea, is best considered a synonym of <em>Grewia</em> L., a species-rich genus widespread across the paleotropics and found in Africa, Arabia, Asia, Australia, and the western Pacific. A new combination based on <em>E. renistipulata </em>Burret, <em>G. renistipulata</em> (Burret) Dorr,<strong> </strong>comb. nov., is proposed. Original material of the basionym could not be located and a neotype is designated. A lectotype is designated for <em>G. morotaiensis</em> Kosterm., a synonym of <em>G. renistipulata</em>.</p>

Subspecies-specific BayesR posterior probabilities of inclusion for a composite population of tropically adapted beef heifers

<p>Many of the world's agriculturally important plant and animal populations consist of hybrids of subspecies. Cattle in tropical and sub-tropical regions for example, originate from two subspecies, <em>Bos taurus indicus </em>(<em>Bos indicus</em>)<em> </em>and <em>Bos taurus taurus (Bos taurus). </em>Methods to derive the underlying genetic architecture for these two subspecies are essential to develop accurate genomic predictions in these hybrid populations. We propose a novel method to achieve this.  First, we use haplotypes to assign SNP alleles to ancestral subspecies of origin in a multi-breed and multi-subspecies population.  Then we use a BayesR framework to allow SNP alleles originating from the different subspecies differing effects.  Applying this method in a composite population of <em>B. indicus</em> and <em>B. taurus </em> hybrids, our results show that there are underlying genomic differences between the two subspecies, and these effects are not identified in multi-breed genomic evaluations that do not account for subspecies of origin effects. The method slightly improved the accuracy of genomic prediction.  More significantly, by allocating SNP alleles to ancestral subspecies of origin, we were able to identify four SNP with high posterior probabilities of inclusion that have not been previously associated with cattle fertility and were close to genes associated with fertility in other species. These results show that haplotypes can be used to trace subspecies of origin through the genome of this hybrid population and, in conjunction with our novel Bayesian analysis, subspecies SNP allele allocation can be used to increase the accuracy of QTL association mapping in genetically diverse populations.</p>

Data tables include major and trace element analyses, replicate analyses of secondary standards, which establish trace element data quality, a summary of new plagioclase-melt major and trace element data and data compiled from the literature, and recovered temperatures and oxygen fugacities, and spatial variations of plagioclase compositions around melt inclusions in phenocrysts extracted from sample D23-2 from the Juan de Fuca ridge, which were thermally homogenized over different periods of time (30 minutes, four hours, one day, and four days). The compressed archive contains Matlab scripts which may be used to recover temperatures from trivalent REE distributions in coexisting plagioclase crystals and melt inclusions or glasses.</p>

Survey data from: Can community laboratory facilities increase access and inclusivity in geoscience?

<p>Geochronology and geochemistry are critical tools in geoscience research and research training, but students and faculty at many institutions have little or no access to the specialized and expensive facilities needed for sample preparation and analysis. Here, we assess whether community laboratories, dedicated to hosting visitors, can help address these inequities by increasing access to cutting-edge methods and the resulting data. We report the first three years of outcomes from such a community laboratory, the goal of which is to improve access, equity, and diversity in geoscience by making an increasingly important analytical technique more widely available. Although the community sample preparation facility we describe here focuses on the cosmogenic nuclides <sup>10</sup>Be and <sup>26</sup>Al, the model we present is viable across the geosciences. Three years of development, assessment, and refinement demonstrate that the community laboratory model shows promise for including a greater diversity of users and applications. However, challenges to fostering a diverse community still exist; the costs of supplies, isotopic analysis, and travel to the community facility are roadblocks to diversification. Our experience suggests that supporting more community laboratory facilities could be an important and efficient way to further diversify the geosciences, both in terms of the people involved and the types of research performed.</p>

<p>This is the complete raw data for the National Association of Scholars&#39; 2022&nbsp;Quantitative Study of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in STEM Subjects in US Universities. It can be dropped into the project&#39;s root folder and used to recreate the files in the ./out directory, which are used to create the visualizations in the final report.</p> <p>The replication files for the project (processed data and code) are here:&nbsp;https://github.com/NASorg/quantdei</p> <p>Please note that it was necessary to split the data into multiple zip files in order to upload it to Zenodo.</p> <p>To get the files and replicate the analysis, these are the steps.</p> <p>1. Extreme reproductive skew at the dawn of sociality is consistent with inclusive fitness theory but problematic for routes to eusociality

<p>To understand the earliest stages of social evolution we need to identify species that are undergoing the initial steps into sociality. <em>Amphylaeus morosus</em> is the only unambiguously known social species in the bee family Colletidae and represents an independent origin of sociality within the Apoidea. This allows us to investigate the selective factors promoting the transition from solitary to social nesting. Using genome-wide SNP genotyping, we infer robust pedigree relationships to identify maternity of brood and intracolony relatedness for colonies at the end of the reproductive season. We show that <em>A. morosus</em> forms both matrifilial and full-sibling colonies, both involving complete or almost complete monopolization over reproduction. In social colonies, the reproductive primary was also the primary forager with the secondary female remaining in the nest, presumably as a guard. Social nesting provided significant protection against parasitism and increased brood survivorship in general. We show that secondary females gain large indirect fitness benefits from defensive outcomes, enough to satisfy the conditions of inclusive fitness theory, despite an over-production of males in social colonies. These results suggest an avenue to sociality that involves high relatedness and, very surprisingly, extreme reproductive skew in its earliest stages and raises important questions about the evolutionary steps in pathways to eusociality.</p>
