Integration of prosumer peer-to-peer trading decisions into energy community modelling
<p>Peer-to-peer (P2P) exchange of renewable energy is an attractive option to empower citizens to actively participate in the energy transition. Whereas previous research has assessed P2P communities primarily from a techno-economic perspective, little is yet known about prosumer preferences for solar power trading. Importantly, the impacts of community members’ trading decisions on key performance indicators such as individual electricity bills, community autarky, and grid stress remain unknown. Here, we assess P2P trading strategies of German homeowners based on an online experimental study. We simulate how various decision-making strategies impact the performance of P2P communities. The findings suggest that community autarky is slightly higher when prosumers are enabled to trade energy compared to when they merely aim to maximize their self-consumption. Our analysis moreover shows that P2P energy trading based on human decision-making may lead to financial benefits for prosumers and traditional consumers, and reduced stress for the grid.</p>
Data from: Integrated species distribution models fitted in INLA are sensitive to mesh parameterisation
<p class="MsoNormal">The ever-growing popularity of citizen science, as well as recent technological and digital developments, have allowed the collection of data on species' distributions at an extraordinary rate. In order to take advantage of these data, information of varying quantity and quality needs to be integrated. Point process models have been proposed as an elegant way to achieve this for estimates of species distributions. These models can be fitted efficiently using Bayesian methods based on integrated nested Laplace approximations (INLA) with stochastic partial differential equations (SPDE). This approach uses an efficient way to model spatial autocorrelation using a Gaussian random field and a triangular mesh over the spatial domain. The mesh is constructed by user-defined variables, so effectively represents a free parameter in the model. However, there is a lack of understanding about how to set these mesh parameters, and their effect on model performance. Here, we assess how mesh parameters affect predictions and model fit to estimate the distribution of the serotine bat, <em><span>Eptesicus serotinus</span></em><span>,<em> </em>in Great Britain. A Bayesian INLA model was fitted using five meshes of varying densities to a dataset comprising both structured observations from a national monitoring programme and opportunistic records. We demonstrate that mesh density impacted spatial predictions with a general loss of accuracy with increasing mesh coarseness</span>. However, we also show that the finest mesh was unable to overcome spatial biases in the data. In addition, the magnitude of the covariate effects differed markedly between meshes. This confirms that mesh parameterisation is an important and delicate process with implications for model inference. We discuss how species distribution modellers might adapt their use of INLA in light of these findings.</p>

Golden-cheeked warbler Integrated Population Model (IPM) data in Austin, TX (2011–2019)
<p>These data and code are associated with the publication in Ecosphere entitled "Urban land cover and El Nino events negatively impact population viability of an endangered North American songbird." We performed an integrated population model to evaluate the effect of climate patterns and urban land cover on the viability of an endangered wood-warbler breeding in central Texas. We used territory monitroing data from 2011–2019 to predict viability of the population 25 years into the future.</p>
Data for: Habitat functionality: integrating environmental and geographic space in niche modelling for conservation planning
<p>Niche modelling is typically used to assess the effects of anthropogenic land use and climate change on species distributions and to inform spatial conservation planning. These models focus on the suitability of local biotic and abiotic conditions for a species in environmental space (E-space). Although movements also affect species occurrence, efforts to formally integrate geographic space (G-space) into niche modelling have been hindered by the lack of comprehensive theoretical frameworks. </p> <p>We propose the 'functional habitat' framework to define areas that are simultaneously of high-quality in E-space and functionally connected to other suitable habitat in G-space. Originating in metapopulation ecology, approaches have been developed to assess the amount of suitable connected habitat, based on the proximity between pairs of locations. Using network theory, which operates in topological space (T-space, defined by a network), we extended these metapopulation approaches to integrate movement constraints in G-space with niche modelling in E-space. </p> <p>We demonstrate the functional habitat framework using empirical data (GPS-tracking and population monitoring) throughout the European wild mountain reindeer (<em>Rangifer t. tarandus</em>) distribution range. We show that functional habitat outperforms traditional suitability in explaining the species' distribution. This approach integrates effects from habitat loss and fragmentation for spatial conservation planning and avoids overemphasizing small, inaccessible areas with locally suitable habitat. The functional habitat framework formally integrates biotic, abiotic, and movement constraints in niche modeling using network theory, thus opening a wide range of applications in spatial conservation planning.</p>
