Surface Elevation Table Lagoon Data for Wachapregue marshes and north Mockhorn Island of the Virginia Coast Reserve 2002-2014

Dataset consists of a subset of all the USGS-sponsored data collected using the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center "old style" SET arm, which began in Fall 1998. Because of changes made to the type of pins used (switched from brass pins to fiberglass in 2002), we present only the post-2002 data here. Each datum under "ELEVTN" variable is the mean SET elevation measured from 36 pins. In the Wachapreague marshes, three high marsh sites (short form Spartina alterniflora) were selected (Curlew Bay 1 (East)HM, Curlew Bay 2 (West)HM, and Gates BayHM), and three low-mid marsh sites (tall form Spartina) as well (same names, except MM as a suffix). About 20 miles south, at the north end of the Mockhorn Island Wildlife Management Area (state owned), only two low-mid marsh sites were selected - Mockhorn East and West.  The dataset does not include elevations taken at unvegetated "pond" sites as measurements were curtailed after 2003.Â

Residence time in lagoons on the coast of Virginia, 2002 and 2009

To better understand the factors controlling residence time and exchange in coastal bays, a three-dimensional finite-volume coastal ocean model (FVCOM) was set up, validated with field observations, and used to calculate residence times in a system of 14 shallow coastal bays on the Atlantic coast of the USA (Virginia Coast Reserve). Simulations were run using measured tide and with & without wind forcing for November 2002-January 2003 and January-March 2009. Residence times are determined by tracking a large number of neutrally buoyant particles in the FVCOM simulations. Particles were released each high and low tide for the first 30 days of the simulations (30 high-tide and 30 low-tide releases). Each value of residence time is the average elapsed time from when a particle was released to when it exited through an inlet to the ocean. Each line of the table corresponds to a site where particles were released.

Wave Dynamics and Fluid Stresses in Vegetated and Unvegetated Coastal Lagoons in Virginia, 2010-2011

Wave, turbulence and wind measurements were performed within a Zostra marina seagrass (eelgrass) meadow in South Bay, Virginia, USA a coastal bay within the Virginia Coast Reserve where ongoing seagrass restoration efforts are being performed, and in adjacent areas without seagrass. Morphometry of Atlantic Ocean Barrier Islands, Lagoons and Marshes 1978

This data set contains morphometric measures of the lagoons of the Atlantic Coast. The goal was to obtain a measure of the complexity of the marshes that filled the lagoons behind the barrier islands. ABSTRACT The width, depth, marsh cover, and marsh-water interfaces were recorded for the lagoons along the 2000 km of coast between Long Island, New York and Miami, Florida. Eigenvectors of these variables for 134 sites (cases) were calculated and analyzed to identify the characteristic variations of these morphometric attributes. Three modes of variation account for 88% of Ihe variance of the original data: the dominant mode contrasts wide, complex lagoons and narrow, simple lagoons. The second contrasts wide, simple with narrow, complex lagoons. A third mode contrasts wide, shallow, complex with narrow, deep lagoons with few marsh-water intersects. The first mode is correlated geographically with variations in the steepness and curvature of the inner portion of the continental shelf. Using variations in the morphometric attributes of the lagoon-marsh system and the fronting islands on the ocean side, the Atlantic coast barrier islands, lagoons, and marshes are classified into three regions and eight sub-regions. The concept of barrier island ''ensembles'' along the Atlantic coast is reviewed in terms of the island-lagoon marsh system and their covariation with offshore bathymetry. The concept of these ensembles is strongly supported.

Relative phase between tidal and solar cycles influences the heating of a coral atoll lagoon

<p>The residence time of water within reef-lagoon systems is of first-order importance to biogeochemical cycles and reef ecosystem functions. Circulation, mixing, and water renewal within these systems is highly dependent upon the geometry of the reef as well as wave, tide, and wind forcing. We are motivated to understand the physical driving a recent warming event as well as observed hypoxia-related fish kills and seagrass dieoff events in Dongsha Atoll lagoon, a 28 km wide coral atoll in the South China Sea. Though extensive work has been done on hypoxia events in temperate coastal systems, there remains a lack of understanding regarding the dynamics of these events in shallow tropical waters. Hydrographic observations were collected in summer 2019 to examine circulation and ocean-lagoon exchange in Dongsha Atoll lagoon. We construct a heat budget for the Dongsha Atoll lagoon to understand the physical processes governing lagoon circulation and ocean-lagoon exchange. We examine the influence of tides, winds, waves, advective exchange, and surface heating on lagoon heating and flushing time. Results show that surface heat fluxes drive rapid heating of the lagoon by approximately 1.5°C over the 22 day study period. Advective transport over the reef flat from tide- and wave-driven flows is an important component of oceanlagoon exchange that is balanced by a net outflow through the channels on subtidal timescales. Specifically, a near phase-locked interaction between diurnal solar forcing and near-diurnal tidal exchange drives persistent advective cooling over the reef flat. Estimated flushing times for the Dongsha Atoll lagoon range from 2.7 to 3.2 days for spring and neap tide, respectively.</p>

Influence of past and current factors on the beta diversity of coastal lagoon fish communities in South America

<p><strong>Aim: </strong>We aimed to assess the relative influence of past (Quaternary paleodrainage characteristics) and current factors on the beta diversity of freshwater fishes in coastal lagoons and explore the main processes involved.</p> <p><strong>Location:</strong> Atlantic coast of South America. Taxon: Fishes (173 species)</p> <p><strong>Methods:</strong> We built a dataset of species occurrence in 129 lagoons across eight freshwater ecoregions of the world (FEOWs) located between latitudes 0° and 36° and calculated beta diversity (βjac) and its turnover (βjtu) and nestedness (βjne) components. We used a partial Mantel test and multiple regressions on distance matrices to evaluate the importance of past and current factors, and of geographical distance in determining beta diversity. Past variables were those representing the historical freshwater habitat during the last glacial maximum (LGM), and contemporary variables were those related to current habitat.</p> <p><strong>Results:</strong> We found high values of βjac within the FEOWs, with βjtu prevailing over βjne. Both past (paleodrainage) and current (drainage area, salinity, and lagoon area) factors affected species dissimilarity (βjac = 46%) and its components (βjtu = 44% and βjne =20%), although explanation was, in part, shared with geographical distance. Individually, the influence of past factors was prevalent in beta diversity and its components.</p> <p><strong>Main Conclusions:</strong> The results suggest that major changes in the availability of freshwater habitats and connectivity since the Pleistocene must have affected the colonization, extinction and recolonization processes of fishes along the eastern coast of South America. We suggest that the high beta diversity values may result from limited dispersal after extinctions in the LGM and that the dissimilar freshwater fish communities currently seen were formed mainly by heterogeneous subsets of the regional species pool that persisted in landscape refuges during past sea level increases and then recolonized coastal lagoons.</p>
