Dataset: Evaluating permafrost definitions for global permafrost area estimates in CMIP6 climate models

<p>This dataset corresponds to the following publication:<br>Steinert, N., J., et al. 2023: <i>Evaluating permafrost definitions for global permafrost area estimates in CMIP6 climate models</i>, Environmental Research Letters, 10.1088/1748-9326/ad10d7<br>https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ad10d7</p><p>Global permafrost regions are undergoing significant changes due to global warming, whose assessments often rely on permafrost extent estimates derived from climate model simulations. These assessments employ a range of definitions for the presence of permafrost, leading to inconsistencies in the calculation of permafrost area. This dataset contains permafrost area calculations using 10 different definitions for detecting permafrost presence based on either ground thermodynamics, soil hydrology, or air-ground coupling from an ensemble of 32 Earth System Models.</p><p>This dataset includes two file archives:<br>1. 32 CMIP6 models, 10 permafrost definitions, historical period (1850-2014), annual data<br>2. 32 CMIP6 models, 10 permafrost definitions, SSP5-85 period (2015-2100), annual data</p><p>This dataset represents source data for the following publication. Please refer to this reference for a more detailed description of the definitions used in this dataset:<br>Steinert, N., J., et al. 2023: Evaluating permafrost definitions for global permafrost area estimates in CMIP6 climate models, https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/ad10d7</p><p>The results show that variations between permafrost-presence definitions result in substantial differences of up to 18 million km2, where any given model could both over- or underestimate the present-day permafrost area. Ground-thermodynamic-based definitions are, on average, comparable with observations but are subject to a large inter-model spread. The associated uncertainty of permafrost area estimates is reduced in definitions based on ground-air coupling. However, their representation of permafrost area strongly depends on how each model represents the ground-air coupling processes. The definition-based spread in permafrost area can affect estimates of permafrost-related impacts and feedbacks, such as quantifying permafrost carbon changes. For instance, the definition spread in permafrost area estimates can lead to differences in simulated permafrost-area soil carbon changes of up to 28%. This dataset therefore supports an emphasis on the importance of consistent and well-justified permafrost-presence definitions for robust projections and accurate assessments of permafrost from climate model outputs.</p><p>For any questions regarding the dataset, please free feel to contact Norman J. Stable isotope dataset of different water components in a tyical permafrost-dominated Basin on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau

<p>Different water bodies, including precipitation, thermokarst lakes/ponds, stream, natural springs, as well as ground ice were monitored in a permafrost-dominated Basin (the Beiluhe basin) on central Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP). Six years&rsquo; continuous sampling work were conducted between 2017 and 2022 in this permafrost basin. Totally, 554 precipitation samples, 2402 lakes/ponds samples, 675 stream water samples, 102 supra-permafrost water samples, and 19 sub-permafrost water samples were collected during six years&rsquo; continuous sampling work. Importantly, 355 ground ice samples were collected from 17 boreholes and 4 samples were obtained from 2 thaw slump profiles. The stable isotopes (&delta;18О, &delta;D, and d-excess) were obtained. This is the first comprehensive dataset in permafrost regions on the QTP, which will facilitate the understanding of hydrological processes under permafrost degradation in the Asian water Tower.</p>

Permafrost signature dataset

<p>Dataset for the comparison between permafrost and non permafrost meandering rivers extracted with PyRIS from Landsat imagery.&nbsp; The dataset is split in two folders for permafrost and non permafrost river, with a subfolder for each rivers. In the rivers subfolders there is an axis folder, containing all the axis files extracted from the river masks, and there can be a migration folder, with all the data for the axis migration evaluation, where this was possible. Metagenomic insights into microbial community structure and metabolism in alpine permafrost on the Tibetan Plateau.</li> </ul> <h2>Abstract</h2> <p><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Permafrost, characterized by its frozen soil, serves as a unique habitat for diverse microorganisms. Understanding these microbial communities is crucial for predicting the response of permafrost ecosystems to climate change. However, large-scale evidence regarding stratigraphic variations in microbial profiles remains limited. Here, we analyze microbial community structure and functional potential based on 16S <em>rRNA</em> gene amplicon sequencing and metagenomic data obtained from a </span><span>&sim;</span><span>1,000 km permafrost transect on the Tibetan Plateau. We find that microbial alpha diversity declines but beta diversity increases down the soil profile. Microbial assemblages are primarily governed by dispersal limitation and drift; the importance of drift decreases but that of dispersal limitation increases with soil depth. Moreover, genes related to reduction reactions (<em>e.g.</em>, ferric iron reduction, dissimilatory nitrate reduction, and denitrification) are enriched in the subsurface and permafrost layers. In addition, microbial groups involved in alternative electron accepting processes are more diverse and contribute highly to community-level metabolic profiles in the subsurface and permafrost layers, likely reflecting the lower redox potential and more complicated trophic strategies for microorganisms in deeper soils. Overall, these findings provide comprehensive insights into large-scale stratigraphic profiles of microbial community structure and functional potentials in permafrost regions.</span></p> <p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For the description of the files, please see README.md file.</p>

The retrogressive thaw slump (RTS) inventory in permafrost region of the QTP

<p>This dataset contain&nbsp;the retrogressive thaw slump (RTS) inventory in permafrost region of the Qinghai&ndash;Tibet Plateau (QTP)&nbsp;based on field investigations and the manual interpretation of the Gaofen-1 and Gaofen-2 images.&nbsp;RTSs were visually detected based on the presence of recently exposed sediments, poorly developed vegetation, and distinct headwalls. To avoid misdelineation of the RTS, the entire permafrost region of the QTP was divided into a large number of grids measuring 5 &times; 5 km each. Grids with slope degrees below 1&deg; or higher than 15&deg; were excluded because RTSs are rarely found at these slopes according to our previous study and field investigations. RTSs in the remaining grids were detected and sketched by the first author and then examined by at least two other experienced authors. Once a RTS was identified, it was assigned a unique number and classified based on its initiation such as next to a river (R), by lake erosion (L), and after the occurrence of &nbsp;active-layer detachment slide.</p>

Permafrost response to temperature rise in carbon and nutrient cycling: Effects from habitat-specific conditions and factors of warming

<p>Permafrost is warming at a rate of two times faster than the rest of the Earth's surface. However, there is still a lack of a quantitative basis for predicting the functional stability of permafrost ecosystems in carbon (C) and nutrient cycling. We compiled the data of 708 observations from 89 air-warming experiments in the Northern Hemisphere and characterized the general effects of temperature increase on permafrost C exchange and balance, biomass production, microbial biomass, soil nutrients, and vegetation N dynamics via a meta-analysis. Also, an investigation was made on how responses may change with habitat-specific (e.g., plant functional groups and soil moisture status) conditions and warming variables (e.g., warming phases, levels, and timing). Warming downregulated net ecosystem C exchange generally via stimulating ecosystem respiration (15.6%) more than photosynthesis (6.2%). Vegetation usually responded to warming by investing more the C to the belowground, as belowground biomass increased much more (30.1%) than aboveground biomass (2.9%). Warming had a minor effect on microbial biomass. Warming increased soil ammonium and nitrate concentrations. What's more, a synthesis of 70 observations from 11 herbs and 9 shrubs revealed a 2.5% decline of N in green leaves. Compared to herbs, shrubs demonstrated a stronger response in respiration and had green leaf N declined by a greater extent. Not only in dry conditions did green leaf N decline with warming but also in wet conditions. Warming in non-growing seasons would negatively affect soil water, C uptake, and biomass production during growing seasons. Permafrost C loss and vegetation N decline may increase with warming levels and timing. Overall, our findings suggest that besides a positive C cycling-climate feedback, there will be negative feedback between permafrost nutrient cycling and climate warming.</p>
