Chimpanzee identification and social Network construction through an online citizen science platform

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Citizen science has grown rapidly in popularity in recent years due to its potential to educate and engage the public while providing a means to address a myriad of scientific questions. However, the rise in popularity of citizen science has also been accompanied by concerns about the quality of data emerging from citizen science research projects. We assessed data quality in the online citizen scientist platform Chimp&amp;See, which hosts camera trap videos of chimpanzees (<i>Pan troglodytes</i>) and other species across Equatorial Africa. In particular, we compared detection and identification of individual chimpanzees by citizen scientists to that of experts with years of experience studying those chimpanzees. We found that citizen scientists typically detected the same number of individual chimpanzees as experts, but assigned far fewer identifications (IDs) to those individuals. Those IDs assigned, however, were nearly always in agreement with the IDs provided by experts. We applied the data sets of citizen scientists and experts by constructing social networks from each. We found that both social networks were relatively robust and shared a similar structure, as well as having positively correlated individual network positions. Our findings demonstrate that, although citizen scientists produced a smaller data set based on fewer confirmed IDs, the data strongly reflect expert classifications and can be used for meaningful assessments of group structure and dynamics. This approach expands opportunities for social research and conservation monitoring in great apes and many other individually identifiable species. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Constructing a social-behavioral association network to study management impact on waterbird community ecology using digital video recording cameras

<p>Studying social behavior and species associations in ecological communities is challenging because it is difficult to observe the interactions in the field. Animal behavior is especially difficult to observe when selection of habitat and activities are linked to energy costs of long-distance movement. Migrating communities tend to be resource specific and prefer environments that offer more suitability for coexisting in a shared space and time. Given the recent advances in digital technologies, digital video recording systems are gaining popularity in wildlife research and management. We used digital video recording cameras to study social interactions and species-habitat linkages for wintering waterbird communities in shared habitats. Examining over 8,640 hours of video footages, we built tetrapartite social behavioral association network of wintering waterbirds over habitat (n=5) selection events in sites with distinct management regimes. We analyzed these networks to identify hub species and species role in activity persistence, and to explore the effects of hydrological regime on these network characteristics. Although the differences in network attributes were not significant at treatment level (<i>p</i> = 0.297) in terms of network composition and keystone species composition, our results indicated that network attributes were significantly different (<i>p </i>= 0.000, <i>r<sup>2</sup></i><sup> </sup>= 0.278) at habitat level. There were evidences suggesting that the habitat quality was better at the managed sites, where the formed networks had more species, more network nodes and edges, higher edge density, and stronger intra- and inter-species interactions. In addition, we also calculated the species interaction preference scores (SIPS) and behavioral interaction preference scores (BIPS) of each network. The results showed that species synchronize activities in shared space for temporal niche partitioning in order to avoid or minimize any potential competition for shared space. Our social network analysis (SNA) approach is likely to provide a practical use for ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation.</p>

Early social deprivation shapes neuronal programming of the social decision-making network in a cooperatively breeding fish

The early social environment an animal experiences may have pervasive effects on its behaviour. The Social Decision-Making network (SDMN), consisting of interconnected brain nuclei from the forebrain and midbrain, is involved in the regulation of behaviours during social interactions. In species with advanced sociality such as cooperative breeders, offspring are exposed to a large number and a great diversity of social interactions every day of their early life, which may have life-long consequences on the development of several neurophysiological systems within the SDMN, although these effects are largely unknown. We studied these life-long effects in a cooperatively breeding fish, Neolamprologus pulcher, focusing on the expression in the SDMN of genes involved in the monoaminergic and stress response systems. N. pulcher fry were raised until an age of two months either with their parents, subordinate helpers and same clutch siblings (+F), or with same clutch siblings only (-F). Analysis of the expression of glucocorticoid receptor (GR), mineralcorticoid receptors (MR), corticotropin releasing factor (CRF), dopamine receptors 1 and 2, serotonin transporter (SERT) and DNA methyltransferase I (DNMT1) genes showed that early social experiences altered the neurogenomic state of the preoptic area (POA) of the hypothalamus. The dopamine receptor 1 gene was up-regulated in the POA of -F fish, compared to +F fish. -F fish also showed up-regulation of GR1 expression in the dorsal medial telencephalon (homologous to the basolateral amygdala). Our results suggest that early social environment has life-long effects on the development of several neurophysiological systems within the SDMN. --

Data from: Performance of social network sensors during Hurricane Sandy

Information flow during catastrophic events is a critical aspect of disaster management. Modern communication platforms, in particular online social networks, provide an opportunity to study such flow and derive early-warning sensors, thus improving emergency preparedness and response. Performance of the social networks sensor method, based on topological and behavioral properties derived from the "friendship paradox", is studied here for over 50 million Twitter messages posted before, during, and after Hurricane Sandy. We find that differences in users' network centrality effectively translate into moderate awareness advantage (up to 26 hours); and that geo-location of users within or outside of the hurricane-affected area plays a significant role in determining the scale of such an advantage. Emotional response appears to be universal regardless of the position in the network topology, and displays characteristic, easily detectable patterns, opening a possibility to implement a simple "sentiment sensing" technique that can detect and locate disasters.

<p><strong>Description</strong></p> <p>This corpus contains multiple middle high german texts with annotations for social network analysis. It contains annotations of: named entities and entity mentions (including partial coreference resolution), direct speech, narrator&#39;s comments. PER stands for &#39;person&#39; and refers to real persons as well as fictional characters. LOC stands for &#39;location&#39; and includes real and fictional places.</p> <p>I annotated named entities (e.g. &#39;Parzival&#39; as PER or &#39;Nantes&#39; as LOC) as well as entity mentions referring to an instance of PER or LOC (e.g. &#39;the knight&#39; for Parzival, or &#39;the city&#39; for Nantes). I did not annotate pronouns. Entity references can contain multiple words, e.g. &#39;the lovely queen Ginover&#39;, and they can be nested, e.g. &#39;[the son of [the king Gahmuret]]&#39;.</p> <p>The annotations follow the guidelines created for multiple categories and disciplines in the context of CRETA. They are published <a href="https://www.creta.uni-stuttgart.de/cute/datenmaterial/annotationsrichtlinien-1-1/index.html">here</a>.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; 2.<em> Entity Grounding</em></p> <p>All annotated entity references are mapped to the entity instance that they refer to. E.g. the refences &#39;Parzival&#39;, &#39;Herzeloyde&#39;s son&#39;, &#39;the young man&#39;, &#39;the red knight&#39; etc. all refer to the character instance &#39;Parzival&#39;. The entity grounding takes into consideration the context of the entity mentions since one and the same expression can refer to different instances (in one context &#39;the king&#39; refers to Arthur, in another context to Gahmuret)</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; 3.<em> Direct Speech (DS)</em></p> <p>Passages of direct speech have been annotated by detecting quotation marks. They are tagged as &#39;DS&#39;. There are a few cases of embedded direct speech (passages of direct speech containing another passage of direct speech); these cases are annotated as well.</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; 4. <em>Narrator&#39;s comments (EK)</em></p> <p>As additional category I annotated passages that contain statements of the narrator, narrator&#39;s comments, extensive descriptions or digressions (e.g. an excursus to a specific topic). These passages are not part of the fictional world or lead to a pause in the timeline of events. The are annotated as &#39;EK&#39; (&#39;EK&#39;: passages that aren&#39;t part of the diegesis, &#39;EK2&#39;: passages that lead to a pause, e.g. comments or descriptions).</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; 5. <em>Segmentation</em></p> <p>The texts are subdivided in passages of 30 verses. Since some text&#39;s editions (&#39;Parzival&#39;, &#39;Willehalm&#39;) contain a formal segmentation in passages of 30 verses each, the same kind of segmentation has been transfered to the other texts. This means &#39;segment 1&#39; contains the first 30 verses, &#39;segment 2&#39; contains verses 31-60 and so on.</p> <p>According to the editions by Lachmann, &#39;Parzival&#39; and &#39;Willehalm&#39; are also subdivided in chapter-like books (Parzival: book 1 to 16, Willehalm: book 1 to 9). The other texts are similarly subdivided in chapter-like sections following common content-based divisions.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Social Network Analysis</strong></p> <p>The data can be used to explore and analyse the social network of the texts. SNA can be performed via gephi [4] using the gefx files.</p> <p>The social network is based on co-occurrences using a) the annotated and grounded entities, and b) the text segmentation in segments of 30 verses each. A relation between two or more entities is extracted whenever they co-occur in a segment.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p><strong>Data downloads</strong></p> <p>The annotated texts can be downloaded in multiple formats: conll, csv, and gexf.</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; 1.&nbsp;<em>Conll </em></p> <p>The files contain&nbsp;seven columns:</p> <ul> <li>(1) token,</li> <li>(2) POS-tag, tagged using a <a href="https://www.ims.uni-stuttgart.de/forschung/ressourcen/werkzeuge/pos-tag-mhg/">middle high german pos tagger</a>,</li> <li>(3) number of segment,</li> <li>(4) Entity reference annotation indicating the intance that the entity reference refers to. &#39;-&#39; if there is no entity reference,</li> <li>(5) EK: &#39;1&#39; in case there is an annotation of &#39;EK&#39;, &#39;0&#39; if not,</li> <li>(6) EK2: &#39;1&#39; in case there is an annotation of &#39;EK2&#39;, &#39;0&#39; if not,</li> <li>(7) DS: &#39;1&#39; if the token is tagged as direct speech, &#39;0&#39; if not.</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; 2. <em>Csv</em></p> <p>The csv files contain&nbsp;all annotations of the category PER including entity grounding.</p> <p>The files contain&nbsp;the following columns:</p> <ul> <li>begin and end (start and end of the entity reference expression, character offset),</li> <li>doc_id (document id),</li> <li>buch (book number),</li> <li>quote (entity reference expression),</li> <li>coref (the entity instance that the expression refers to),</li> <li>overlap (indicates if there is an overlap, relevant for embedded entities),</li> <li>ek and ek2 (narrator&#39;s comment),</li> <li>ds (direct speech),</li> <li>space (annotations of the space where the story takes action, can be ignored here),</li> <li>segnr (number of segment),</li> <li>em (embedded),</li> <li>klasse (entity class),</li> <li>xrange (technical, relevant for annotation view).</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp;3. <em>Gexf</em></p> <p>These&nbsp;files can be used to import the data to gephi. It is based on the annotation and grounding of entities (categorie PER). A relation between entities is based on co-occurrence (whenever two or more entities co-occur in a segment, they have a relation; with more relations, the intensitiy of their relation grows). The text segmentation is described above.</p> <p>Embedded entities are excluded. Entities mentioned in direct speech (DS) or in comments (EK) can optionally be selected or deselected. Social network matrices data from sociology university classrooms

<p>Hypothetically, a student could attend a class, listen to lectures, and pass the class without knowing or interacting with other students. What happens to the network when the classroom expectations change? For example, there is a coursework expectation that students exchange contact information, or the instructor uses collaborative learning practices. Or what if the principal investigator (PI) of a scientific team goes on a sabbatical? This study uses the framework of classrooms because of their relatability across science. We asked how do different instructor coursework expectations change network structures within a classroom or other learning environments.  A social network survey was administered at the start and end of the semester (pre- and post-test) in six university sociology classrooms to explore how expectations impacted the communication and learning networks. We found practical changes in course expectations impact the communication and learning networks, suggesting that instructors, facilitators, and others could be the archintorÔ (<strong>arch</strong>itect+<strong>in</strong>structor+facilita<strong>tor</strong>) of the network. Understanding that expectations can impact a network's structure marks a paradigm shift in educational assessment approaches. If the archintorÔ has identified the "optimal" network structure, then their task is to design expectations that result in specific interactions that ultimately improve student achievement and success. This work provides recommendations for classroom archintorsÔ to create the most impactful classroom networks. Future research should extend beyond education and classroom networks and identify the best or desired networks in other areas like public policy, urban planning, and more. If these "optimal" networks were identified, an archintorÔ could design a social network to solve wicked problems, manage a crisis, and create social change.</p>
