Data from: A new tetraradial olivooid (Medusozoa) from the Lower Cambrian (Stage 2) Yanjiahe Formation, South China
<p><em>Octapyrgites elongatus n. gen. n. sp.</em>, a relatively rare, tetraradial olivooid (Cnidaria, Medusozoa), is described from Bed 5 of the Yanjiahe Formation (Cambrian Stage 2) near Yichang, China. Though similar to Olivooides and Quadrapyrgites from the Fortunian Stage in consisting of a partially corrugated (long.) periderm with a quadrate (transv.) apical portion and V-shaped apertural lobes, O. elongatus is substantially larger than other olivooids. The elongate apical region of O. elongatus is similar to four-sided Anaconularia anomala, though with a flat tip that may have been an adaption for a sessile mode of life. As in other olivooids, embryonic development in O. elongatus may have been direct. Lastly, the paucity of olivooids and the absence of pentaradial cnidarians and carinachitids in Cambrian Stage 2 indicate a marked decline in the disparity of cnidarians near the Fortunian/Cambrian Age 2 boundary, when by contrast bilaterians underwent rapid diversification.</p>
Data from: Fossil embryos from the Middle and Late Cambrian period of Hunan, south China
Comparative embryology is integral to uncovering the pattern and process of metazoan phylogeny, but it relies on the assumption that life histories of living taxa are representative of their antecedents. Fossil embryos provide a crucial test of this assumption and, potentially, insight into the evolution of development, but because discoveries so far lack phylogenetic constraint, their significance is moot. Here we describe a collection of embryos from the Middle and Late Cambrian period (500 million years ago) of Hunan, south China, that preserves stages of development from cleavage to the pre-hatching embryo of a direct-developing animal comparable to living Scalidophora (phyla Priapulida, Kinorhyncha, Loricifera). The latest-stage embryos show affinity to the Lower Cambrian embryo Markuelia, whose life-history strategy contrasts both with the primitive condition inferred for metazoan phyla and with many proposed hypotheses of affinity, all of which prescribe indirect development. Phylogenetic tests based on these embryological data suggest a stem Scalidophora affinity. These discoveries corroborate, rather than contradict, the predictions of comparative embryology, providing direct historical support for the view that the life-history strategies of living taxa are representative of their stem lineages.

Fine-scale phylogeography of coastal fishes in the South China Sea: Possible roles of biological traits and geography
<p>This dataset contains input files for a suite of phylogeographic analyses conducted on several coastal fishes in the South China Sea, results of which described in the paper "Fine-scale phylogeography of coastal fishes in the South China Sea: Possible roles of biological traits and geography", submitted to Journal of Biogeography.</p> <p>Outline of each analysis is as follows:</p> <p>arlequin: Estimations of genetic diversity indices and genetic differentiation using Arlequin.</p> <p>BSP: Reconstruction of historical demography using a Bayesian skyline plot implemented in BEAST.</p> <p>MSN: Construction of minimum spanning networks using PopART.</p> <p>BMS: Testing association between genetic diversity indices and biological traits by Bayesian Model Averaging using the R package 'bms'. </p> <p>PCF: Testing association between phylogeographic patterns and bilogical traits using Phylogeographic Concordance Factors.</p> <p>See readme.txt in the folder for each analysis for more detail.</p> <p> </p>
